@@xenos6614 He has another video showing the same method for it so yes. Be sure NOT TO get air into the system and lift front wheels up and turn steering side to side before starting the car to prevent air entering into the system..
@RGV2300
@RGV2300 2 года назад
@@samuelkatherinediozarago7692 that'd be almost impossible. Like filling and draining until clear fluid comes out from the drain, but there is usually no drain in the steering system. Air will come in eventually, but a healthy system won't be noisy if you remove the air correctly.

Great video ! The only additional tid-bit I would add to this video if you don't want to use a turkey baster (because I always drip with it) I started using a pump from an old shampoo bottle. I found using the shampoo bottle pump I never have any dripping since the pump sits in the reservoir the whole time without having to transfer it in and out using a baster.

I did this procedure over a couple of days of emptying reservoir and refilling oil after getting home. This works perfectly. The system only has about a quart and I saved about $130. Simple and effective.

@@bobbywin9303 Then once you get it clear, suck the old fluid out of the reservoir and refill with new fluid regularly, perhaps every year. Then the fluid stays fresh and you don't have to worry about flushing it or causing extra wear on the pump by completely draining the fluid and running air through it on a regular basis.
@wigletron2846

Better to do it this way that way you don't risk introducing air into the system.
@zigwil153
@zigwil153 3 года назад
A way to avoid entraining air is to only remove the amount in the reservoir, replacing with new, then starting up and turning wheel lock-to-lock several times. Then keep repeating. It takes longer. This method isn't cheap as you're removing new fluid with the old as you go. ideally, you want to drain the entire system in one shot. But as Chris said it's a pain in the butt. _Also, I recommend leaving the car elevated so the front tires don't get a flat spot from turning the wheel_

Another great instructional! This will be my next service on my car. So far I've used your instructions to do my brakes ie. discs, rotors, and callipers (pistons were seized on one front and one back) and bleeding. I fudged the bleeding first time round, but repeated it and all went well. Chris, the thing I really like about your videos over some of the others is you don't make every procedure sound more technical or difficult than it is. ThanX for the help again!

+ChrisFix I've completed this service. 😀 I have a 2007 KIA Rondo 2.4. Two things I'd like to share regarding my model: 1) Finding fluid for this vehicle was an exercise in patience. It uses PSF-4 synthetic which is difficult to find anywhere except a dealership, and it is expensive ( $15 CDN, 3 bottles for one full change). I wasn't comfortable with the specs of national brands and they were equally expensive. I finally hit a Hyundai dealership where the parts guy sold me a BG product they use in service and meets OEM's spec. I paid $45 for double the amount required (1.8 litre) enough to do several EASY services. 2) The fill hole (extraction in this case) on my Rondo's PS reservoir is too small for a standard turkey baster. I found a piece of soft clear PVC line and slipped it over the end of the baster. It worked perfectly, with the line fitting into the fill hole. Thx again! Year-to-date, your video instructions have saved me over a grand in labour charges!

Watched this one and the full flush video. Decided that the best option for me (not being able to mess up the driveway in my community), was to turkey baste out what I could and refill once a week until the stuff I basted out was clean and pink. Great video. I did something similar to this. I changed the power steering fluid in the reservoir 3x. First time, I removed the [blackened] old power steering fluid, put in new fluid, then drove the car around for a few mins. Then I repeated the steps 2x until the power steering fluid was more-or-less translucent.

Don't use ATF 4 in place of PS fluid, "unless" your owner's manual specifies it. For some vehicles it does, for some it doesn't (don't use in Hondas etc.) as it can cause the seals to fail etc. in vehicles where proper PS fluid is recommended.

ChrisFix hello there, im going to try and do this but my brother says not to remove old fliud and just to top it off. My fluid is old and my car mileage is 109,000 miles. My mazda5 asks for mercon v and i bought two bottles 32oz of the valvoline maxlife with stop leak (cause i want the best for my car), do you think it will be ok to use the valvoline max life instead of mercon v ( what car manual asks for and is hard to find on local auto stores.) What do you think? Please advise. Thanks.

DONE! Although I did some mess mainly caused by the wind, the process was really easy. Seeing the old black fluid makes me feel even happier for my work. The only thing that remained is recycling. Thanks a lot.

If you do this 3 or 4 times over several weeks, you'll have clean fluid throughout your P/S system. Not quite the same as a flush but having ALL the P/S fluid new will make all the difference in the world. I also do this with the brake fluid about every 3 or 4 weeks until the fluid in the reservoir looks like new.

Might take a few iterations depending on reservoir vs system capacity - it will definitely use more new fluid than the "drain from underneath" method. Neat thing is you can do this any time you park the car up for the night and eventually you will have rinsed all the old fluid out.

Good video. I do this every year with power steering and brake fluid as part of a normal service routine, That way the fluid is never dirty for the life of the vehicle.

Your How to vids is awesome as usual Chris Fix. And yours is a super way to do the job, but only one way to do it right. My way is simpler and safer, maybe. I just suck the reservoir out and refill it. Run the engine a couple of minutes. Shut off engine, suck fluid, refill again. Repeat once more. Now, just wait til the car gets driven again, and repeat the suck and fill. And you know you're done when the sucked fluid looks new. Easy, safe, no chance of wrecking the PS pump from running dry.

After using the turkey baster to remove the majority of fluid, it was a great idea to rotate steering wheel lock to lock to remove more dirty PS fluid from the reservoir. I usually remove old PS fluid every 40K miles. After 215,000 miles, my Volvo still has the original rack & pinion and power steering pump.

Michael Chitwood Thanks! Changing your power steering fluid is one of those things most people dont do but it is really easy. And like you have experienced with regular changes, your rack and pinion and ps pump will outlast your car!

Question have you told your wife about the misuse of the Turkey blaster or did you just wash it and put it back.?? Mmm baster, not blaster. Sorry. Now be honest.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I prefer replacing the fluid in the reservoir from time to time rather than flushing, this is what I do my self and I do the same in the break fluid as well.

I just did this on a 2003 Mercedes C320. All the shops quoted me at $200 to change out the fluid. I did it in 30 minutes or less and $UCCE$$ - I even had 2 shops say I needed to switch out the pump + tank - for Only $700. Thanks, Chris Fix! Cheers!

It still amazes me when i see people who earn thousands during income tax but don't put 1 cent into their cars to maintain them and keep them going! i always see cars broken down and abandoned on the side of the highway and most of the time they look like uneducated kids. I plan on teaching my daughter starting this year when i pick up a used car im purchasing. Shes autistic but high functioning and shes so excited to help out with fixing things.

Ford 3.8L is a real dog can't believe you're still running one. Mine blew intake gaskets, then head gaskets, then head gaskets again. Sent it to the crusher where it belongs and haven't bought a Ford since.
