That sounds like more work with stuff in the way.

I did it the way you're talking about. But taking the parts off the front of the engine gives so much working room. And if the guy wasn't taping and explaining, it would have taken less than 5 minutes to get that stuff off. And as you get older, you get less flexible to work around stuff! But there's always another way.

As I get older, I find ways to work smarter and get things done easier/quicker. This is one of those things. But also, when you've done something many times, you've prob tried different ways and end up sticking with the best route. Reaching to remove the bracket bolts are much easier than pulling the pulley off in the vehicle. Everyone prefers to do things their way. No wrong way to do it as long as it gets done. Being a mechanic for over 40yrs, taking the fan shroud and fan out, then removing the pulley in the vehicle takes much longer and makes a difference on someone's final bill. I try to save people money, and not charge for things that don't need done. Removing the fan/shroud only gives you room if you're taking the pulley off the pump in vehicle, and plan to leave the mounting bracket attached to the engine. It's much faster to remove the bracket/pump as a whole and then pull the pulley on the bench or in a vise. Ea vehicle is different, but when you wrench everyday, you find tricks to make the job easier and quicker, which saves my back for sure. Next time you get qoutes for a job, and two places are off a bit, think about why. One is charging for doing it one way, the other is saving time and charging less. One took the fan/shroud out, the other didn't. The second you go over 1 hr, most shop round up. 5 min is the difference between paying for 1 hr or 1.5 or 2 hrs labor.

damn that sucks. yes its very hard to turn the wheel, power steering is definitely a must in these trucks

as far as your problem you’re describing i would also say bad pump. as far as what pump the edelmann pump is good and has 100 year/1,000,000 mile warranty. $135 on rock auto. also got all edelmann lines and inline filter.

everything together (pump, fluid, lines and filter) was just under $300 for me

You need to replace the whole pump. It's warning you it's going out

You don't need to take that off. Just push the tensioner over and pull belt off pump only

either a bad power steering line or bad pump, the whining noise is from no fluid in the power steering pump
