A power company customer says he notified the company someone was stealing electricity.But he wound up paying for the stolen power.Richard Moore says he alerted Progress Energy about someone stealing electricity from his meter box.Moore says a Progress Energy investigator found an underground power line running to another house.Moore says he knew nothing about the line or the power theft until someone in the community told him about it.After the company's investigation, he received a power bill for more than ,500.A Progress Energy spokesman says after an extensive investigation, the company decided to bill Richard Moore for the stolen power.No criminal charges were filed.Follow Sherrill Barber on Twitter @sherrillbarber

Tapping before the meter results in the power not being metered-DUH! So the amount of power not billed is unknown. So how was the amount calculated?

There is a main meter on every street I think. They calculate all consumed energy by meters then they check the main meter, they substract the total from clients from the total of main meter. All the difference will be billed to caught client. Where more people stealing electricity they divide the total bill between the caught persons.

They charge for the tampering of the equipment.. its usually $3-5k

That's some serious consumption, for the charge! I've stoled home phone service before cellular from an apartment complex neighbor! Lol. Regardless z that wire can't handle that much juice! That's like 10+ megawatts of electricity worth! That's a factory consumption! Lol... Growing marijuana? Hydroponics! Lol

Why would you not just trace/follow the buried line or to where it goes ... That would make more sense to me

They know who used the extra electricity. Here is how they think: 1. This homeowner had his meter compromised by a thief and is innocent. 2. We don't have a billing account for the thief, nail the homeowner. We took over an industrial unit in the early 1990s that used to belong to a carwash company that went bankrupt. It had gas heating and gas hot water tank. The people did the midnight move without paying their bills. We got a $700 bill for one month. I was the only person working in the unit. The heat was off and there was no A/C. The hot water tank was off and we only used cold water to wash our hands. The unit had lights where I could switch on parts of the place and I only used fluorescent lighting in 30% of the unit. The rest had cars parked under car covers and was unusable. We complained. They sent a guy who pointed at the BRAND NEW transformer and said that that uses electricity. Then he pointed at every outlet and counted every light and said "Yup you could have used that much electricity" and walked away. They wanted their money from the last tenant and they were going to make us pay for it. Really the guy should engage a lawyer and get a statement from a certified electrician. If that was the right wire in the picture, that was a piece of 14/2 NMD and at the distance to leave the property, cross the property line and enter another house and then power something substantial, it would have burned and failed.

@@ILOVEMUVA Yes. Not only that, they asked to have 3 months worth of funds in escrow. In case you're not familiar with that term, you have to pay a thrid party to hold your payments and they pay the other company out of the escrow account. The bad news is once it is discovered that you have three months of money in escrow from a utility, ALL utilities ask for three months worth of payments in escrow. Even the insurance company. So long as you stay in business, then they will put you on regular payments like everybody else. Many years later, this would happen to a group of us that bought a (large) rental property in distress. Insurance wanted $50,000 in escrow and then the rest of the utilities lined up with their hands out.

Ok so if they tapped into the energy side and not yours, how did they come up with those numbers to charge you of its not going through your meter? They have no numbers to show for anything, no recording of your usage, or an increase spike for them to even go off of. Honestly, it seems like complete shit to me just a made up number based on your current usage and probably added a full months worth plus half that number for interest. They are horrible. They have increased our rate just recently and 3 days later an employee crashed into a transformer and tower unit. Every 30 minutes they said it wouldn't take longer than 1 hour and updated the website for 1 more hour. Same thing on the phone. This went on for 4 days till we had power again and it was in the 30s all that week and 20s some nights. Did we get a discount or anything at all? Nope!

If he was assisting his neighbor in stealing electricity and profiting from it, why would he call the power company on himself? Sounds like they've got some world-class imbeciles at Progress Energy.

the first thiefs are the companys of electricity!!! they not5 even go t0o read your meter,, they do estimates,, and they tel you this in your face , it means they tell us ,i charge you wherever we wanted.

My water company has supposedly installed a digital/bluetooth type water meter that lets the utility worker just scan with a device, he has from his vehicle..thing is, myhusband & myself both checked it & it was the same old meter that has been here at my homeplace for many years!! My mom (lives next to me btw) hers is a new one but across from my property .. when I went to pay my bill I asked them (friendly & kinda jokingly) how they were calculating my water bill monthly if they had to get out of the truck to read mine & they tried to say that I had tampered with it & was trying to charge me extra for a "screening" charge..I still don't know what that means lol ..needless to say, I had to pay it ($150)..I have cameras that show every angle of my property & it records & stores it. They tried to say the worker (whom they had on the phone) said he always got out of his truck to read it!!. He flat out lied!! I showed them the last 5-6 different times & months he did not get out of his vehicle from my cameras, let alone have the time to even scan the ones that require that! I do not care to pay for what I use ,but I can't stand being called a liar or that I steal. They ended up a few weeks later changing my meter out & what was funny is they tried to park the truck to where they believed my cameras couldn't see fully...oh well,my moms picked them up perfectly lol 😆 ..sorry for the long post!

When Melbourne Australia converted from coal gas to natural gas the, then state owned, gas supplier sent out men trained to convert appliances to the new fuel. Hundreds of houses were discovered where someone had tapped into the gas main of the house next-door when the victims house was being built. Some had tapped in before the meter and many more after the meter.

So you follow the cord. If it goes to an outlet next to his mobile home/house then I think he is the one using the power. If it goes to a neighbor's house then they should investigate.

That's because you were the one stealing the power. If someone next door wanted to steal your power it would have been throught the breaker box directly beside of the meter.

What does it matter if they're tapped on the meter or to the breaker panel? Perhaps thief was smart enough to know his breaker box would be metered and eventually found out?
