I set the left controller button to 16.5. the right controller button goes to a Max of 10 and that's the one that I set to 1. I've triple checked all the wiring I'm using the exact same parts he used but I'm getting no juice to the wheels. The speed controller switch is set furthest away from the controller. I'm at a loss was hoping you might remember your install and have any tips for where I might go from here

I did this hack last month. I was surprised the single 4.0 battery lasted about one hour, or maybe it just felt like an hour. That was with 2 kids, maybe about 90ish pounds total and they were using their Silverado truck to haul paving stones for me :) Controller was set around 50% I think. It was still definitely faster than the stock battery. I did not know about the low voltage protection cutoff for the battery so I ordered one the monitors you linked and also I liked the dock you linked better than the adapter I used so ordered one of those too, thanks for this video!

I just watched this and when I get a chance I’ll retrofit my granddaughter’s Jeep but she’s only 3 so, I’ll wait several more years. In 1714 John Harrison invented the H2 Clock and it exponentially changed our world. You and the other engineers that have preformed this retrofit are in his league. Tinkering with stuff like this keeps us Dads and Gramps young. Thanks. I’ll definitely wait till she understands how to use the controls and I believe the retrofit will be too powerful for the remote. Your video and others I noticed that the tires are well seasoned and have advanced inner wear. This is very informative to tell me that you all have also waited several years before popping the hood open. Thanks

I did the same setup but without the speed controller since the kids would never go back to 12V once they try 20V. However the cutoff board relay is made for 20A and this cars go over 30A when you press the gas. I recommend using a bigger relay.

Low voltage cutoff board, other channels recommend a 24 volt relay in the wiring to prevent the burning up of that low voltage board. As others stated that they went through a few boards. And thanks for the knowledge of the video, I had no idea about the voltage issues u spoke about, I have a barbie jeep with the 1st gears removed and 2 18volt 9ah batteries and I also took the Escalade tires that are like triple the size of the jeep so it looks so damnn cool lifted and extra wide, and I wrapped the tires all 4 with mountain bike tires with huge knobbys, I'm 210lbs and the jeep roosts the grass up in my yard and also flips me str8 backwards not even just a wheelie it completely flips backwards, then the Escalade I took a hoover board battery out and use that 😂 my kids love it, but removing 1st gear ⛮ makes the top speed over 25 miles per hr but u have to be careful because it takes like 40ft to stop so you have to be in a open field

Great video. If you are not already invested in batteries, Ridgid and Ryobi batteries have built in cutoff protection making it easier to adapt them to the vehicle I run a pair of Ridgid 4aH at full chooch and get great runtime. I also have a setup with a 12v 12aH + 6V 12aH SLA batteries. Takes longer to charge, but much cheaper cells. I should compare runtime on the 12aH SLA vs the 8aH Li-ion Ridgid packs.
@EVLS10
@EVLS10 4 года назад
Only things I'd add are: 1. Either a voltage monitor on the dash or low voltage indicator so you can get the power wheel back to the charger station to swap batteries before it dies. 2. Diodes. Any battery system that uses multiple self contained batteries needs current flow control otherwise only replacing one dead battery will result in hurting both the fully charged and dead as they try to equalize as fast as their internal resistance allows.
@lazydeadpoet
@lazydeadpoet 4 года назад
Any links to what diodes you would use would be awesome.
@EVLS10
@EVLS10 4 года назад
@@lazydeadpoet Really the type/style doesn't matter too much in this case. Most important spec is continuous current rating at your highest ambient and lowest voltage. Even then go bigger than you need for a safety margin. Then you want to minimize forward voltage drop to give the motor as much voltage as you can. Other than that just pick the cheapest option. Mouser or Digikey make it easy to filter down your results to find your perfect one. Or you can get lucky on amazon finding one that works for even cheaper.

Excellent tips, let me help some more: 1. The low voltage cutoff module here will drain the battery on its own. You must install a switch at the power supply. 2. The video assumes the power wheel voltage rating is the same as the battery. In most cases, that is not true, therefore the need for a dc to dc convertor regulator. If you need a regulator, most of them comes with a low voltage protection, and you may not need the low voltage cutoff discussed in point #1. Hopefully this helps
@bradley3549
@bradley3549 2 года назад
No powerwheels are designed for 18-20v, but they all seem to handle it just fine. Trying to step down 18v to 12v is pointless and at these currents would be expensive both monetarily and in efficiency lost.

@@havocware I just ordered a voltage cutoff module...I see below you describe how to set the values. What is the threshold value and what does it do? What should I set it to if I set the voltage cutoff at 16.5V like you did? Thanks
@havocware
@havocware 4 года назад
Hey Kevin. The threshold value acts as a buffer between when the the cutoff module kills the power (the voltage setpoint) and when it comes back on. For example - I set it to 16.5 volts, with a 1 volt threshold value: the module will open the relay (stop power flow) when the voltage reaches 16.5 volts, and won't re-energize the relay (enable power flow) until it reaches 17.5 volts (16.5+1). It acts as a pseudo hysteresis function, and stops the module from starting/stopping/starting when the module kicks in, and the voltage increases due to lack of a load. Make sense?
@kevingalloway8065
@kevingalloway8065 4 года назад
@@havocware Sorry to bother you again, but I have a question regarding the voltage cutoff module...I got a great deal on an 18v 12ah Milwaukee battery and when my sons get in to go, the module clicks and shuts down and the led goes out momentarily and then comes back on. After a few tries, the Jeep will eventually go, but it's very sporadic and the little black box on the module gets pretty hot. Any ideas?? Thanks
@havocware
@havocware 4 года назад
Hey there Kevin. The black box on the module is the relay - if it's getting too hot, it's most likely because your vehicle is drawing too much amperage. If you have the same voltage cutoff as I used, the relay on the board is rated for 20A, if your vehicle draws more than that with the higher voltage battery, it might eventually burn out. Do you have any fuses or a speed controller on the circuit? The fuses will protect the relay, and the controller will help you dial in the speed to a safe zone for that cutoff relay. Can you post a video of your setup / wiring so I can take a look?

(Take a battery charged in fast charge and when it’s full put it directly on a slow charger and watch as it starts charging more) Charging to 80.% is the ideal spot for optimal lifespan but it also decreases run time by a lot. 100% charge is less damaging to the cells than fast charging them is.

You use really good connectors. Any recommendations on a kit you recommend that has all the ones you have used? Looking for solid connectors that are easy and last. Great videos. Ordering the parts now. Daughter's Dune Racer stopped going in reverse and only went forward slow. Discovered it was a faulty gear shifter switch tonight!

Hey there, thanks for watching. Good wiring is key to a solid installation, and less headache later. For wire ferrules (straight pin terminals), this is a pretty decent kit with crimper: amzn.to/3at3ofd. For ring and spade terminals, this kit would work pretty well: amzn.to/2yuK8kb Cheers!

Thanks for the great video! I noticed that the molex connectors that you recommend are 14-20 AWG. Will those work with the 12 AWG wire that comes on the cradle?

Hey Moe. I didn’t have any issue with the molex pins and the 12g wire. It’s a tight squeeze, but nothing it wouldn’t but into. Cheers!

I appreciate the detail. I did the same mod to my kid's Power Wheels and thought the low voltage cutoff module would allow me to safely keep the battery in the vehicle overnight...wrong. It must still draw some current even after it cuts off at 16.5 volts. It ended up killing a $90 battery. Do you remove the battery after each use?

Awesome videos man, thank you for making them so informative. Ordering the parts for my kids now, though I'll be using my garbage Ryobi, because that's what I have.
