Bro, I was a prison guard in commiefornia for 15 years, maximum security, worst of the worst. I can tell you from experience that, other than the hammer fist, the wrist lock was my go to. We all used it. When you’re fighting with a dude or your partner is fighting with a dude on the ground, standing, up against a wall, whatever the case, there is no better way to take the fight out of someone. Well, grabbing the balls is faster but I didn’t like doing that unless I had to. I didn’t know anything about Jiu Jitsu back then but I knew if I could get an arm and crank that wrist down, the fight was over. It was the best way to get a resistive guy into handcuffs. For all those who will talk smack about grabbing the nuts, save it. Level IV inmates in California are doing mostly 25 to life or more, most are gang members. When you fight with them, they are trying to kill you, there is no tap, there is no respect, there is no referee to stop the fight. If you can’t get control of this guy, he will bash your skull or throw you off the tier. So yeah, damn right I’ll grab his balls and make him wish he was born a female.
Cop here since 2001. I can just find wrist locks naturally. Same reasons from my work. Folks in my gym were caught off guard by my locks, but now they've wizened up and made it harder.
It's like a video game when someone "cheese" which tends to mean someone who playing cheap, sneaky, dirty, easy win. Sometimes consider a fast win.. I think the term prison rules consider they probably accusing the person is breaking the rules/foul play/not fair/not honorable/dirty/harmful. I didn't look it up so I might be wrong this just my interpretation. If the move is legal I think this is more of a cheese play than playing prison rules. Like in the video game world the cheese play is part of the game and not illegal so can cry about it all you want if it not rule breaking can't be upset about it. Wristlocks are a submission that is nearly impossible to apply in a “gentlemanly way” (hence the “Prison rules” label) - most other submissions can be applied slowly with extreme control/immobilization of the opponent. The wrist lock is incredibly difficult to apply slowly but still effectively where an arm lock, choke, leglock, etc. can be applied at any pace. 🤷♂️
I disagree. I can apply a quick catch and hold with no problem. I use them all the time and have never injured anyone with one. It might be difficult to develop that sensitivity with it but it’s possible.
@@Chewjitsu I believe you apply with discretion. I also believe there is always opportunity to not harm our partners with wrist locks. That said it’s been my experience many wrist locks are not applied with your discretion. Some of the most painful submissions I’ve experienced in training are from wrists.
Commenting for the algorithm. I used to do fairly useless Japanese Jiu Jitsu before BJJ and there were a lot of wristlocks. Now I can do press ups with my hands inverted so the goose wristlock doesn't work. I've never seen the cow wristlock though, that's new. Although regarding the goose wristlock I will tap if I think I'm pushing my luck because sometimes I can vaguely feel it and I wonder if something like the ankle lock will occur where you barely feel it and then it snaps. So I don't want to find out that my wrist is like an ankle.
I hate them because too many people will crank them before you have a chance to tap, and my wrist always enss up hurting for the nezt week. It's the only reason I don't roll with certain people. Other people understand that if my elbow is controlled, my wrist isn't going anywhere and they can just hold it until my brain registers what's happening. I'm perfectly fine with them.
Chewy, please expand this subject to wristlock when your neck is being attacked after your back has been taken. I am a white belt, stocky and quite strong comparing to most guys in gym. I also have a very short neck and very difficult to chock, which led to (almost ) all higher belts seeing my neck as a challenge. Often people tunnel vision on my neck trying to RNC me for the duration of a round. I'm not good enough to escape easily, but I became good at (surprise) defending RNC😂. Thanks in advance!
it's not inherently dirty, but you just gotta know what you're doing and be cool with your training partners. rule in our gym is that if you wrist lock someone, you do it correctly and carefully, and if you injure someone, you're the one taking them to the hospital and you're staying with them until they're released.
I think the attitude towards wrist locks being dirty could be from an assumption that it is harder to spin out of. Since finger/toe locks are illegal maybe there is an association of the wrist having "less threshold to sense danger because its small bones"? But I would disagree with that sentiment since to me it's no different then a ankle lock just tap early and often. 🤷♂️
often you learn it at bluebelt n they use it on un suspecting white belts that havent learn it throwing out the rules aka prison rules aka anything goes😂😂
