Nah, it wasn't a big deal either way. A little awkward and then everyone moved on. These things happen. I've been in similar situations and I just brushed them off. The dad is probably a nice guy who was taken aback by the unusually loud noise in a small gym. Not everyone spends time around powerlifters and serious fitness fanatics. (by the way, I've always wondered how gyms expect you not to slam heavy weights. There's no way to gently put down something that's heavier than you. They need to buy rubber weights or build proper platforms.)

Do yourself a favor: NEVER try to be a Billy Badass by confronting someone in the gym. There is a LOT of random weaponry within short reach in a gym and you never know whose face you're in. Many years ago in a Florida gym I watched a similar situation unfold where the guy who was minding his own business was suddenly confronted by a butt-hurt blowhard. The guy didn't say a word to his aggressor. He simply waited until the guy turned around before slipping his fingers through the hole in a 2.5 pound Olympic plate and promptly used it to crack the guy's skull open with one fierce swing. It was a horrible scene. It reminded me of something you would see in a National Geographic special on primate behavior. The gash in that dude's skull was enormous. Everyone had to leave and they had to close the gym for the remainder of the day to clean up. Two wrongs don't make a right, but I can't help but think that guy - in whatever condition he is today after that hit - would be better off if he had just minded his own damn business.

@Auxified
@Auxified Год назад
No, because if this is some clever way to suggest that it's too heavy to put down then it proves the point that you should be lifting lighter in the first place, instead of doing an ego lift, which is loud, damages equipment, and increases the users risk of injury since they have overloaded the concentric portion of the exercise. Just place the weights down. Yes I'm sure I could increase my deadlift from 415 to 465+ if I drop the weights, but it's such a dumb thing to do.
@steelmongoose4956
@steelmongoose4956 Год назад
@@Auxified Lifting heavy is not ego lifting. Slow concentrics on heavy deadlifts come with sone physical hazards, and they’re guaranteed to shorten your set to almost nothing.
@Auxified
@Auxified Год назад
@@steelmongoose4956 Lifting an amount that is too heavy to control is ego lifting. What else can it be? The best way to create a physical hazard is lift a weight you don't have control over. As I just described above I can still do 415, and place the bar down. That's not almost nothing. I'd get an extra 50 pounds from dropping it at the top. Mark Rippetoe tells you to place down the bar.
@rinne-8810

I was barbell benching 225 when someone told me that my form was wrong. I politely asked him to demonstrate to me the proper form, he went and said he can only bench 135, so what I did is to politely tell him to piss off he can't even lift my weight and he has the audacity to approach me and correct my form. This is why I go to the gym as early as possible to avoid know-it-alls that mess up other people's workouts with their sense of entitlement and wannabe trainer mindset. They should atleast wait for people to ask for help or for advice. Right now I am doing 310 for 3 reps and he still stuck at 135 and that was 14 months ago since he approached me to correct my form.

@@jakesimmonds5043 It's good. Otherwise I won't improve or worst get injured. I have been lifting religiously since College for more than 7 years, I am at my 9th year of eating healthy and going to the gym to work out. I moved to a new city/state and enrolled myself to a new gym and I am guessing that guy is the local Mr. Know-it-all in there and wants to show off or something. Most of the guys I have spoken told me to just ignore him. He still does his know-it-all routine to other new members even today. Some are kind enough to seem to entertain him but most of the time he gets blown off. No worries mate, there will always be attention seekers in a gym environment.

People think that the weight or the speed with which they do the exercise is everything, but the truth is that the most important thing is the correct way to do them. The gym is full of guys who lift a lot but have horrible form, you can easily find a kid lifting less than 60 who could give a class on how to do the exercises correctly to guys who lift a lot more than the kid.
