I’ve raced four speeds since the 70 s. When you. Have full throttle in first pull back hard it won’t come out of gear Then just tap the clutch it will be in second gear in a instant. Same with the other gears push hard towards them tap the clutch. Practice at low RPM until you sound like an auto trans. I’ve been called mr four speed since high school. Now you know the trick.
Yeah, I "came" at about 2:18 ..... lol ..... nice job !! I was a wild man back in the day with a 4 speed !! LOTS of fun !! Makes a big pair of melons bounce around nicely too !!!!!
You have NO idea !! LOL !!! I travelled the world and left my mark !! Life's been good to me !!! Took some diamonds and brought 'em back some gold too !!!
Yeah, I that 2-3 shift is tricky. I was doing good for about a month, hitting 1-4 perfect. Then I screwed up that 2-3 shift once, and that's all it took lol. Good bye transmission.
That was amazing!!! There is no replacement for a manual transmission. Only with a manual you can have so much fun while being shaped into a better driver.
Good job. I had my doubts as I’ve seen so many videos of guys shift slower than my grandmother but you came through like a pro. Nice to know there’s still some guys who actually know how to power shift !
My childhood, my big brother had a 69 Lemans 350/330 4 speed convertible w dual exhaust, under the dash where the gauges are in this car was a FM 8track, and the Hurst shifter had a T handle,,power shifting was a passion of his, especially on the 2/3, I could still hear Tommy James Crystal blue persuasion mixed in w exhaust howl
And could worked on by any guy with some tools. Now a days even if you're a great mechanic you can hardly do anything yourself. Example: new f250 diesels. If you want to do anything major the entire cab of the truck has to e separated from the damn frame to gain access to the motor. Crazy ain't it
@cv 67 Right. I'm in the market for a old 7.3 f250 so I can keep the hard miles off my new truck. I need the warranty to last as long as possible on it because I cant do anything to it lol
@cv 67 exactly. I just watched a video this morning about this old guy 80 years old or something and he had a 2000 I believe it was f350 dually with ONE MILLION ON HUNDRED SISTY THREE THOUSAND MILES! And hes still driving the damn thing. Original motor, turbo, trans, rear end. Had to replace a few small things but damn. He doed hot shot work so hes all over the place but that trucks still running on the roads right now. He had to replace the steering box because of how much hes drove it 😂 look it up, it's a good video
That's exactly right, never miss a gear first of all, clutch it but don't miss it ! and never let up off the gas. Nice job, dude has experience. That's the key.
Sounds like a close-ratio trans, with the 2.20 first gear, and maybe a 4.10 rear. Bad ass, my man ! Makes me miss my old `66 Grand Prix, 421 HO tri-power 4-speed.
Yes true power shift...I raced those cars back in the 60s.. keep the gas to the floor ..tap the clutch.. slam the shifter in to next gear... did it for years never hurt a car...if you want the fastest time ..its the only way... some of the pro guys would hardly use the clutch.. then the granny would suffer.. ..just hope the syncros would mesh.....
Hell yeah that was power shifting. I had a friend years ago who had a '69 Ram Air IV GTO, yeah I said Ram Air IV, that car was scary fast. Nice video. Way to catch those gears just right.
Man that brings back a bunch of fun memories! Speed shifting my 70 TA back in the late 80s! I always found short shifting my pontiacs worked better but didnt matter on the street lol. Spun all the way through 1st and most of 2nd. Fun stuff! Well done!
Oh watching this made me smile and cry at the same time. I had to watch this.. When I was little my Dad and Mom had a 71 Pontiac LeMans and it was gold with a vinyl green top. Green bench seat in front and back and Hurst 4 speed on the floor. Loved that car. I wanted to see if they sounded similar and yes they sounded almost identical. Ours was a 350 2 barrel but still had that transmission sound like this one and the turn signal sound all brought back good memories. That car sounds amazing ours did too love that sound. Them he power shifted just like my Dad used too it was like watching my Dad here amazing. My Dad never missed a gear either. When I was 10 or so I learned how to drive it to from watching my Dad and Mom driving it all those years. I got to drive it a few times when I got my license and could power shift also. Thank you for posting this.
I can't wait to finish my nova so I can do this. Sure automatics can be faster and having 5 or 6 gears is nice for longer drives but there is nothing cooler than a 4 speed.
I'm old school, it's used to be Doug Nash. Spend $2k on a trans and shifter, drain the gear lube out and put at in it, drive it nice for a few thousand miles. Drain it and put 90wt in it.. Makes them shift really nice...they had like a 3.08 low gear...with 3.50 gears in the rear end it's about the same as a muncie with a 2.20 first gear and 4.30 in the rear end...more gears is always better
Nice machine. Sounds strong. Nice upshifts too. Good job, in that respect. But. ... Had to frown each time you approached a stop sign or intersection. No downshifts, at all. And, I actually winced as you "muscled" the shifter into 1st gear at one point. Shows that you either don't understand what purpose the synchronizers in your transmission serve, or you lack the skills to use them more effectively. Try tapping the throttle slightly, as you move the shifter into first gear. By doing so, you spin the primary (input) shaft faster, and it more closely matches the secondary (output) shaft, which is rotating with the forward movement of the vehicle. You'll find that with a little practice, the shifter will just slide into first gear (and any other gear you want to downshift into) without the need to force it into gear. This makes your transmission last longer, due to reduced wear. It also extends the life of your brake pads and shoes. Truckers use a similar method, known as "double clutching" for every downshift, for a very good reason. ... they don't have the luxury of synchronizers. Sadly, in time, if you choose not to heed this well-intentioned advice. ... you won't have any synchronizers either. 😉
I used to be a big rig driver and we would call that type of shifting, "Floating The Gears". We would use the clutch to get the rig moving and if you timed it right you didnt need to use the clutch unless a downshift was needed.
That's how it's done. I could listen to that all day long. Nice 'n tight and sounds strong. Appears to be a '69(?) GTO, M-21 close ratio and stiff rear-perfect muscle car!
If this Pontiac has stock connecting rods you had better not miss a shift if you are shifting at red line. I love Pontiacs but they don't like high rpm with the stock rods. The 421 super duty may be an exception to this.
Fully synchronized Muncie transmission, you can speed shift all day,, but try that in with a Saginaw 4-speed LOL no damn way,, got to love them old Muncie 4 speeds....
