We haul a 39.5ft Keystone Raptor 5th wheel with a Bullet Proofed 03 6.0 F350. The electric fan was screaming during towing and steep grades and always running hot. When I changed out the elect clutch 3yrs ago for the 7.3 clutch all that changed our lives, Great Fix!!!

There is a middle option as well with the OEM snow plow fan clutch. It engages earlier and more robustly than the stock one for better cooling while still talking with the ecm and not setting any codes.

I have a 06 f350 being a used for portable restroom service in FL. it runs for 10 plus hours a day and idles a lot while cleaning units, which very's. I I always hated for it to idle in the summertime it would be on the hotter side when it idled for long periods of time. I did this fan swap a year ago and was the best thing I did to this truck. I also had a 05 that always ran hotter then then my 06 wish I knew about the swap sooner for that truck, before the motor let go on it.

I did this to my 6.0 along with a bullet proof oil cooler and mishimoto rad. Best investment I ever did in that truck.

Glad it's not just me who's had issues with the electronic fan control when the truck is working its butt off.. yeah the CEL is annoying, but the old style fan clutches just work better in the South in the long run. Worth the retro-retrofit if that makes any sense

My 6.0 was running anywhere from 190 to 215 with a failing electric fan clutch.. It was all over the place all the time.. I recently installed the 7.3 old school fan clutch. Around town it runs 176 to 182 at all times and towing on the interstate the highest I’ve got it was 191.. I was concerned at first the fan stayed engaged for like two days everywhere I went, then it started working normal and it’s been good ever since

The OEM F/C also helps it reach operating temperature faster on startup along with the other things mentioned in the video. I haven't noticed a difference in Fuel Economy. The A/C does blow colder i noticed and it also makes more wind noise at low speed. Its not extremely loud but its definitely noticeable. I have an 06 F350 and tow cars from So Cal to SLC. Overall EOT's & ECT's are lower.

Great review & trouble shooting. Back in racing days we had variable pitch fans that would change with rpm. Your absolutely right with the shroud that encloses blade. Must be compatable with shroud. Also a concern is the air flow not being blocked by "stuff". Needs to flow uniform to engine compartment. Infrared camera shows areas where flow is restricted. Great job guys. Can't beat experience! My next truck will be from Georgia (hint, hint). Being retired no more wasting money on new. Your experience has value you can't get at a major dealership. Keep doing what you do best! Mike

At the age these pickups are hitting now, I know many have radiators that are full of bugs and would benefit from a good cleaning with condenser cleaner.

Do you know where I could buy a dummy plug that is installed when you remove the OEM electric fan clutch and switch to the 7.3 style mechanical fan clutch. You briefly mentioned it in a previous video. It supposedly cancels the soft code when the electric fan clutch is removed.

I just got off the phone with Ford in Ridgecrest, CA & was quoted $445.45 for a fan clutch. Damn! 😱 Cheaper than an engine though?

I’m having issues with my fan clutch sticking on. A few days ago I had my belt replaced in Cody Wyoming as a PM, not because of failure. I’m now in Butte, Wyoming and experiencing intermittent but fairly constant fan clutch problems. Now that I know the symptom, the fan clutch has stuck a few times on occasion during the last year but didn’t know what it was and it quickly went away so my head was in the sand. No overheating and no engine codes then or now. BTW, 11, F250, 6.7, single alternator with 219,000m. The fan clutch is original OE. Knowing now, I wish I would have changed it out as additional PM in Cody. I’m about to run my truck up to the Arctic Ocean through MT, BC, Yukon and Northwest Territories. All this to get at my question…. Should I change out the water pump & alternator also as a PM? Should I change out anything else? Limping I is okay but a tow from east Jesus is bucks.

Will this work on the v10’s? Mine runs way to hot pulling two four wheelers up Mont Eagle. Should be an easy task for the v10. High speed fan never engages, but it almost always gets well over 200 degrees.

Hi Bill, So I have one of these installed on my 06, and the problem I have had straight from when I installed it is that it will stay engaged even though the temperatures don’t require it to be. I especially see this during the winter, it engages right from the start up and stays engaged even if the ambient air temperatures are well below freezing. Any idea how to fix this? Is the fan clutch bad?
@martens4709
@martens4709 Год назад
My 7.3 always does that so does my blazer, both have been replaced. That should stop after 5 minutes or so or once you get driving if it's on all the time it's bad

Possible temperature sensor issue, wire short or relay contacts welded together.

Working at a diesel repair shop I’ve had to redo many fan clutches because the unit turned out to be defective out of the box, just as you are saying. Is it OEM or aftermarket? A lot of times I find the aftermarket cannot make a fan clutch that functions properly.

I’m running a old school fan clutch and a brand new oil cooler. IM tuned and studded And around town the oil will be about 4 to 7 degrees warmer.. On the interstate towing or not towing I’ve never seen it get more than a 10° difference since the new oil cooler. Before the new oil cooler I was up to a 35° difference
