An entry-level instructional guide to planning your VFR flight. Aimed at those working towards their pilots' licence or just wanting to brush up on things.
I do apologise for the audio, I haven't yet found the best distance from mouth to mic.

New 2017 flight planning video released. More to come.

Hey mate. I'm here, 8 years after you posted the video (at the end of 2023). We chatted a few months back when I came across your videos for the first time. I ended up taking a break of flying. I ran out of money - or more correctly, I had greater priorities. Either way, I'm nearing going Solo (again, first time since 1998) and so your videos have proven to be really useful as a recap. I'm hoping to secure a major contract soon and then I plan to focus 100% of flying and complete my PPL, Night, IMC and hopefully my MEP before I move 'down south' to start a PhD at Imperial College London. So, I'll be leaving Liverpool for good. I'll 'gently' study for the ATPL exams but I doubt I'll take the IR rating. I won't do the CPL because at my age, I don't want to be a commercial pilot. 42:30. They're called "Agonic lines" where the needle always points to the North. Back in 1998, when I first started flying lessons in Caper, Wyoming, it wasn't like here in the UK and variation played a large role.

I am deep into the Navigation theory at the moment, and that certainly helped to make things much clearer! (from a practical point of view) Very good video with clear explanations, comments and tips, great visuals and easy and pleasant to follow. Thanks! :)

Nice video! I like your relaxed but very informative style! Weather permitting, in a few weeks I'll be starting cross country flights so watching this has been very useful.

Thanks Steve. Good luck with the cross country. I'd love to hear about your route and how it goes.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned that that Bird sanctuary near Shoreham is an area of hang gliding or paragliding site. A bat like symbol compared to a duck like symbol. Interesting and informative video.

Nice catch! Well worth pointing out. As demonstrated, it's easy to mistake the two at a glance.

I thought you use TAS to work out your ETA!! Not the ground speed. Can you verify that for me please Thank you

ISquarded - Just to say thanks for a great video. I did Nav at ground school a few weeks ago and this video was brilliant to go over it again as doing it at home, you never know for sure if its right ! - It must have taken ages to make the video and thanks for doing so - Chris

Thanks Chris, I appreciate that. I forgot to mention to check NOTAMs as a final step. I find SkyDemon Lite useful for cross checking your gross errors, it also shows you any NOTAMs on your route. Also, notaminfo.com/ukmap (if you're in the UK). Both are free!
@altomar718
@altomar718 7 лет назад
Thanks for the advice. I use Sky Demon Lite to cross check the results of 'drawing lines' on the chart! and signed up for the info at NOTAMS. Just the 3,500 foot glide approach to do and then just wait for the weather for first cross country so the video has really helped refreshing ground school which covered Nav some weeks ago ...... I will be storing the video as a favorite just ot check before take off !!! - Thanks again

Chris Wileman You're welcome and good luck! I went for a solo navex around D207 yesterday morning, you just can't beat it. Happy flying!

Thanks for a great video, I'm finding this really useful while tackling navigation. Hoping to start cross country training for a PPL over the next few months. Just a quick question re the TAS calculation- where do you get the pressure info from? Does that come from the met office?
@Quantiad
@Quantiad 7 лет назад
Hi. To be honest, it normally makes so little difference that I just treat my altitude on the QNH as a pressure altitude (FL). Try it and see, you'll only be out by a few knots in the end. If you are being rigorous though, and I recommend you are just as a matter of good practice (and to prove to your instructor), you'll need to get the regional QNH for the area you're planning to fly in. Create a free account on the Met Office (if you're in the UK) general aviation briefing site: www.metoffice.gov.uk/premium/generalaviation/#/home Here you can access the all important F214 and F215, giving you your area forecasts, spot winds and temperatures. You can also access a full list of regional pressure settings for the current hour and the hour to come: www.metoffice.gov.uk/premium/generalaviation/#/qnh If you don't have access to the internet at the time, you could ring your local air traffic control unit, they should have this information to hand. I hope it goes well and I'm pleased you found the video useful. Thanks for the question.

***** Thanks! I'm glad you got something out of it. I'm only a PPL VFR qualified pilot but I'll try my best. Are you talking about light ac IFR outside CAS or commercial airways IFR?

Commercial airways IFR.

Has anyone done the PPL Nav ground exam recently? What on earth do they actually ask because in the Pooleys book at least, they seems to be a lot of overlap from the other subjects. e.g. calculating fuel. . . isn't that more about "Performance"? or airspace categories. . . isn't that in Air Law? or engine performance at different altitudes. . . isn't that in 'aircraft general knowledge'? or QNH/RPS settings. . . again, more of an operational procedures / meteorology (met to understand why pressure varies) etc etc etc! I always try and learn the books in depth but it's taken me 6 months to process under 2/3 of the Nav book and wondered if I'm stressing about learning everything unnecessarily. Advice would be great! Cheers

The tracks are from point to point so if your taking off in different direction how do you then get back on track ?
@Quantiad
@Quantiad Год назад
You could climb into the overhead and start your clock when you pass through on the outbound heading or you could even start your route from a position just away from the airfield that you can aim for after you've taken off. In those cases you'd have to allow a little extra fuel and time for those initial climbs. Is that what you mean?
@sbmorris2k6
@sbmorris2k6 Год назад
@Quantiad yea that's pretty much what I was looking for thanks alot 👍
@Quantiad
@Quantiad Год назад
@@sbmorris2k6 I seem to remember during PPL training it was normal to climb into the overhead and start your route from there. Not only are you in the right place, it also allows you to get to the right altitude and cruise speed for your calculations to be as accurate as possible.

@Quantiad cheers, I'm looking to start my ppl training soon had one lesson a year ago so just learning as much as I can right now, into flight sim aswell so like to use the same principals for that.
