In reply to some of the comments below, I have found that I can play along with the Getz/Gilberto recording by placing a capo at the first fret and using the chords you have provided. Voila! No more in the wrong key. Thanks for all your hard work putting these videos together.
Yes, I suspect they probably speeded up the recording in post production - that was the common practice these days, though it could also be played from Eb. However D is much easier and BTW you may also easily change the pitch in some DAW, e.g..Audacity, a semitone down if you want to play along. I do that often, whenever I suspect on some post production pitch change thing. Thanks for your input.
Totally agree... I've learned more from "Bossanova guitar" than if I'd flown to Brazil and took lessons...the format is so accessible it's crazy... we are truly blessed to hear the real Choro, Bahia rhythms which you 'aint gonna find here in TX.
Adoro seu site e seu youtube ! Estou aprendendo todos os classicos da bossa nova no ukulele, é bem legal. Assim tenho um pouco do Brasil là na França. Muito obrigado
Hello and thank you for your work! I noticed that the chord shapes in the video are slightly different than the chord shapes on the website. Especially beginning with the second "Ta Fazendo...", for example the F#m6 is not in the chord sheet on the website. It seems like there are a couple of changes that make the video played in a different way than if you learn from the website. I wonder if anyone else noticed this and has any thoughts on which is the best way to play the song, or has any advice on the differences at all? Thanks Again!
This video has the chords in D major. On the Getz/Gilberto (or at least, on my files of it), I hear the piece in E flat major. Have you transposed it, or has my recording been altered?
You're right about E flat, they could have recorded in E flat or the recording could have been altered in post-production. Whatever the case, Gilberto usually played this song in D as it can be seen in several videos here on RU-vid. Thanks for pointing it out.
Great lesson, thanks! I have a question regarding the rhythmic phrasing: What guides you to choose certain patterns over others? (Or if you copied the original what guided Joao) Is it an improvised thing based on what sounds good to the player? I'm having trouble remembering/feeling where to line up the bass with the chord because of the syncopations, even though the bass is a steady pulse. It gets especially difficult when you try to sing the song along at the same time. I would really appreciate someone's advice for this.
Thank you for your post. I transcribed Getz/Gilberto recording, that is the guitar part played by Joao. The previous recordings as far as I know were very different, as the song was mainly performed in samba-cancao style. Perhaps you may find more info about rhythmic phrasing on bossanovaguitar.com site. It's always difficult to perform several different things simultaneously. The key is to separate different tasks, learn them individually and do not attempt to connect them together until you learned all of them correctly. Hope that helps, and thanks again.
Você já ouviu a música Sampa, do álbum de 1991 do João? Recomendo. Adorei seu canal. Ganhou uma inscrita. Estou iniciando meus estudos de violão através das músicas de João Gilberto, meu ídolo.

thanks for putting this up! one question, it looks like your lesson text on your website is a little different than this video tutorial. Which is more accurate to learn how to play the whole song?
I don't remember exactly, but I believe it should be the video lesson rather than the version on the site. Please note that in many subsequent versions João, like many other musicians, used slightly different chords. Sometimes I combine several versions when making lessons/transcriptions. Thanks for your post.
I appreciate your lesson a lot. Just one question. Why is the second chord in the progression which contains notes F, D, G# and C# is called "E with added 13th and diminished 9th"?? Is it some kind of rootless inversion?
Yes, this is a rootless chord. F is b9 relative to the root (E).It contains also major 3rd (G#), major 6th (C#) and minor 7th (D), Thanks for your input.
Thanks for your reply. It was just an example among others we have my question on the 9th second of the video. The rhythmic phrase 1312 corresponded to a 2+2+1+2+1+2+2+1+3 (=16) but I begun to read your website after I asked the question (I'm at the intro now) and I understand you make a distinction between the thumb (playing the main beat) and the rest. But it still isn't very clear :-)
That's correct, intro finishes with A7/-9. Chords with lyrics are available on bossanovaguitar.com. Please note that I didn't repeat the first part of the song (Ta fazendo...). Good luck.
I don't have video with lyrics. The section A in the song chart on bossanovaguitar.com. (between Ta fazendo.. and ...meu coração) is repeated. If you strip the repetition then it becomes the same as on the video. Hope that helps. If you still have troubles please register to www.bossanovaguitar.com/booked/Web/index.php (this is currently experimental online guitar lesson booking scheduler) and I'll get back to you by email.
