A video for first years at UoP as they prepare for their first clinical practical! This is much more specific to students, but figured it was still worth making public in case others can benefit from it as well!
I will be attending the uni next month for dentistry and this video made me super anxious idk why! although it's really helpful and you really did a great job in it ... anyway, i still subscribed cause i loved it ! can't wait to see more of your videos soon :)
thanks for the video! my home town is one of the few dental hygiene colleges. it is a 2 year program, with a year of pre req, so the dental route is better! the school does practice and cleaning on students of the college for free. does the dental program do that too? I was offered a deal by a past dentist instructor , I would let them practice extractions and place immediate dentures, and go back when the permanent could be placed. I have gastroparesis and brain tumor, no matter what, my teeth are bad from the acid unfortunately my hub passed away, so I didn't get to yet, but if you come across the opportunity for something like that, do it!
I'm in high school and really want to be a Dentist but don't have that good of grades, and I was wondering if it really is that hard and that you need to be that straight A student?
I'll be honest... dental school is VERY challenging. HOWEVER, if you work hard in undergrad and truly are passionate about dentistry, you can definitely do it! Don't worry about your high school grades, or even where you go to college. It matters more what you do from this point forward!
Thank you so much!!!! I have one more question I was going to pick between RN/nurse anesthetists and dentistry just because the schooling is much shorter but does 8 years really go by fast and be worth it in the end?
Hey James! I am applying to dental school this upcoming cycle and UOP is one of my top choices. Could you give me some advice on the application process? I live in SF too by the way! haha Thanks.
Certainly! In addition to the typical important aspects of the application, make sure you make it uniquely yours! I found the personal statement to be a great opportunity to let the admissions team know who I'm like as a person in addition to what I've done in the past. Likewise, during my interview, I barely talked about my application... my interviewer had already read it over, so I took any opportunity I had to say something he didn't know. We can go into specifics too if you'd like, just let me know!
Rosie OMG yep! It is a three year school. The pace is very accelerated, but manageable. As far as social life... you do have some free time. It's tough to fit fun in but possible nonetheless. Let me know if you have any more questions!
Thanks for replying! I really like the idea that its a 3yr rather than a 4yr. Is it stressful because of the very accelerated pace? Also, how do you feel about the total cost? Its pretty steep compared to others.
All dental/medical schools can be stressful, UOP is no different. It's a combination of a lot of things. School (didactic) work, simulation lab work, personal life, living in San Francisco all contribute to stress. But my classmates were always there to support each other, so that made it manageable. I feel like the total cost is steep, yes, but there are a few things to keep in mind. First, graduating a year earlier than other schools means potentially a full year of work and experience gained over a comparable 4 year program. Likewise, our breaks are much shorter so there are more days of instruction and clinic throughout the year. You'd also be living in San Francisco, which (though expensive) has a lot to offer and to explore. And last, it's a very good school. The majority of students starting out will make it to graduation and find employment. Not all dental schools are like that.
UoP is definitely one of my top choices because of your reasonings. I'm visiting in March so I'm really excited to see the campus. Thank you for replies! I really appreciate it!
