Thanks for posting this. Just watched the film Balloon. Absolutely brilliant!

The film 'Night Crossing' does make you realise just how brave and desperate the two families must have been. Thank you for posting this video.

Nice mini documentary. Ironically this video proved my point that this actually occurred, so thank you very much for posting it. Good job on the camera work and your explanation. Not the typical jerking around and verbal follies usually seen.

thanks for uploading this, not a lot of people have seen the actual balloon and do not rreally know that this in fact happened.

Extraordinary true story .Out tv station SBS has just shown the movie Balloon which was fairly accurate except at the end . Thanks for this vlog.This happened just after i visited the area in 1975 & saw the East Berlin side of the Wall., as a tourist.

Looks to be 4 tanks holding 50-60 lbs. of propane. Once the burner was lit it could not be shut off. If I read correctly there was only enough propane to last around 25 minutes.

Brilliant, inspiring, so brave. Watched this after watching film on the BBC in UK.

The sheer desperation they must have felt to actually get in there and fly in that thing. Just crazy.

I saw the movie Night Crossing with John Hurt and Beau Bridges about this daring escape from East Germany. If you knew 1/4 of what East German secret police were like, you'd be surprised that more didn't attempt to escape in this way.

The reason that they had multiple different kinds of fabric is because things were scarce and they had to buy different kinds of fabric. After the first try when everything was one color and the balloon was found the secret police would find you if you did it again.

nice Video.i just read about it.one of those dudes wrote the whole Story somewhere in the inernet and i just read it.they build 2 balloons before this last one really work. after the first 2 Ballons,he was done with that.but the stasi realise something and start to search..so they had to do something and start to work on a last much bigger baloon. they knew absolute nothing about baloons.just had some Pictures and normal human logic and some mathematics. what a adventure!

So brave just to be able to live a free life that everyone in the world should be allowed to do
