Practical gifts upcycled from vintage linens! Paganoonoo Sewing Tip with Michelle Paganini 

I found some beautiful hand embroidered pillowcases in my mothers linen closet. They were gold with age, and had the greasy stain from a head that slept there. I couldn’t bare to discard them, so I put them in some laundry stain remover. It was the one where he puts gold lace in, and it came out snow white. Mine came out with no difference. I let it soak overnight. It was better. I let it soak for a total of three days. Every stain was gone. 😊

I love this idea! Some of these women from the past have put in so many hours of work into these pieces, and it’s a shame when someone simply throws these pieces away because it “doesn’t match their taste”. Repurposing these pieces still put them into good use, and the labor that the women put into original pieces is still honored. When I was younger, I remember taking some of the doilies that my paternal grandmother made and turned them into gowns for my Barbie dolls. My mother was originally upset that I did that, but I told her that she was just keeping them in the cedar chest and not using them, so I made them into something that can be used.

I put beads on the edge of the circular crocheted doilies and use them to cover the milk jug, sugar bowl etc when we are eating outside.

Thank you, you give some good ideas. If I wanted to use the lovely pillow covers that did not fit, I'd cut the sides and insert another piece of fabric to enlarge the pillow. That way you could still use them as pillow covers.

Thank you for caring about the exquisite work of the past by finding a repurpose for them, a friend using them in bag making i have used a small doily as a pocket to hold item like a cord holder on my craft bag for my light box etc. God bless.

What a lovely idea. I think it would make it easier to make the first cut if they weren’t your mother’s or grandmother’s needle work. I have some of strangers things from Goodwill, but it would take a bit to convince me to use my family’s items.

The crocheted linen that wouldn't lay flat was made to be starched into ruffles which stood up when it was on the table.

I sew doilys onto muslin window panels and cut the muslin backing away. And made LOADS of hanger covers with some vintage pillowcases I found at my grandmother's. And the top (plain) part is great for wire hangers to protect men's office shirts.

I definitely don’t like to cut into beautiful things, but I will start looking out for these linens now. I am also trying to move to France I hope they have linens there. I’ve seen the flour sacks. Great ideas thanks

A lot of linens have coffee and tea stains. I use this stuff called Carbona, which has stain removers for each type of stain. To use it, I wet the stain and make a paste, letting it sit there for as long as it takes to remove the stain. It works well especially on coffee stains. Love the hanger covers...good idea.

An easy hack for cutting out would be to fold the case and pattern in half. This would ensure side to side uniformity.

Might I recommend using pinking ✂s for cutting out...to prevent linen, cotton from unravelling when washed. Thx for the video.

I like to make similar hanger covers but a bit looser. I put them over fragile items that I don't wear often. They keep the dust off.

How about video on making straight dress out of vintage tablecloth?

Would it not be easier to sew straight off instead of going down, parallel to the seam that is already there, it will avoid a bulky seam and it is already level?
