To develop our ankle motion foot technique, we have to first of all make sure that our body is capable of executing the motion by itself, without even the pedal under our foot. In fact, practicing and developing the ankle motion directly on a pedal, as everybody do, it's already an application of the ankle motion on the external force of the spring of the pedal. So, even BEFORE putting your foot on a pedal, do the exercises that I share in this video!

thx so much for this explanation. because I was using the whole legs and it was too demanding for fast tempos. I will practice my ankles to do the job.

Very good explanation! Please do a video on transitioning from heel-down to heel up/ankle motion. I’ve been playing ankle-down up to 200bpm for years using heel up ankle motion for higher tempos, however I still struggle playing exclusively ankle motion at tempos below 200 as it feels very awkward…

Wow 200bpm heeldown? Thats insane, man! I cant imagine. I started out heeldown at age 6, because my drum teacher told me that was the way to go... I just recently, after almost 20 years made the switch to really learn full leg motion and ankle technique. Its miserable and slow results, but i want to learn it the "right way" for playing metal! Respect, never thought 200bpm were possible heeldown tbh!

These videos are EASILY the best explanations I've seen on you tube. This has really helped me out. Thanks man, I really appreciated it! I'm currently stuck in the hybrid. I think the pedal is set too loose. When ever I try and do ankle technique... It's like I'm at war with the pedal, and it just doesn't want to budge.

Hello James, your videos are always helpful and I'm doing this excercise! I'm getting started with ankle technique and I already can play some in ~170 bpm though it lacks power still. What I struggle the most with is actually mid tempo double bass 120-160 bpm. My body refuses to play in those tempos despite lots of practise. Is it possible that my body wouldn't be able use full leg motion past 120 bpm?
