Barenboim was inspired to create a new piano after playing Franz Liszt’s restored grand piano during a trip to Siena in September 2011. Struck by the vital differences in sound of an instrument constructed with straight, parallel strings rather than the diagonal crossed ones of a contemporary instrument, he set out to create a brand new instrument that combines the best of the old and the new and offers a real alternative for pianists and music-lovers in the 21st century.

Mr. Barenboim, this question may not be as interesting as the others but if you could answer,I was fairly curious of how you came to the wonderful conclusion of creating a RU-vid channel? It was an extraordinary idea and the videos you put up bring joy to all our ears(I believe) because it brings a change from the usual commercialized videos and advertisers that fill the socializing networks we use everyday! Your work popularizing music, making non-musicians and non-specialists discover, enjoy and decode the great repertoire pieces has always been important. To the question of the difference between the education of a good pianist and a extraordinary one: 1. What they have in common is: They are taught how to play the piano correctly that is how to do the right key attack to produce a real and formable piano sound on the instrument by understanding how to do this and knowing how the mechanics of a piano works, what by the way is almost never taught to the great mass of piano pupils and teachers, so that is often no chance to achieve it. 2. The difference: The great pianist must be a great conductor as well (not necessarily with an own orchestra) and must be highly gifted. 3. If a great conductor could not play the piano extraordinary well he wasn't taught the how to play it technically (key attack) in his education in most cases. 4. Both must practice. 5. Understanding physics helps.

Yes, I've watched many of Barenboim's videos on YTube, and his multilingualism is quite literally awesome. He's truly fluent in English, Spanish, Hebrew, German, French and Italian. (It took me a while to find a few videos where he's speaking French or Italian, but sure enough...)

I don't speak a word of Hebrew, but I do speak every language maestro spoke in this video. That's not astonishing or awesome, that's something anyone can do. Just go ahead and learn all these languages. It's not hard. I managed to do it, and I'm an idiot. Nobody is holding you back except for yourself. Kind of like with music, really. Anyone can do it. There is no such thing as talent. "Talent" is just a shorthand for "I could do this, but I am really lazy". You could be the next Barenboim. Yes, you. But instead you waste your days on RU-vid lamenting how you're not Barenboim. Well, then. Good luck with building a life on top of that.

Hello Maestro, a question: If Beethoven was still alive in the 19th century, which side do you think he would have been on in terms of musical politics? Would he have sided with Brahms and the musical conservatives, Liszt/Wagner and the progressives, or embraced both sides? Thank you for your time with this question and greetings from the USA!

These videos are quickly becoming among the highlights of my week. Maybe a year and a half ago, I listened to the fourteenth string quartet of Beethoven and since then it has remained my favorite work of art and my favorite work of music. No other piece engenders humanity as a whole as this does; no other ventures into the deepest crevices of sorrow and beauty at once as this does; no other represents life itself as this does! I believe this piece to be the pinnacle of the collective creative efforts of men. I would love a video on your opinion of this work as well as one in which you tell us about your own favorite work of music. Thank you for these videos.

Maestro, I would like to ask you for your opinion on the following. Why has no composer managed to recreate the style of J.S.Bach? From Mozart to Gould they have tried but without success. What did he possess to compose such music using the musical form of counterpoint? Why has no one else been able to recreate this form in such a wondrous manner? I listen to your rendition of his Well Tempered Clavier everyday. I have crossed all musical borders throughout my life but now at past 60 his music is more than adequate enough for my daily fix of music. I am also working through his inventions at the piano, revisited after many years.

I like the way Daniel approaches music in a philosophical way. This is actually quite rare, Music implies aesthetics and meaning. It seems to me that it has an existence even beyond great composers; for when composing it's never possible for mere mortals to trap entirely what they 'heard' - heard with the inner ear, that is. The thing they didn't trap also exists...it has a half-life and this is why we can sometimes imagine writing quite different versions of Mozart in our minds. So what on earth was going on when Mozart wrote K574 in an organist's guest book? It was a private thought - not music, really to be played. Played on the organ? It's like Scarlatti; and it's like the last Bach Fugue of Book 1. I think it is by no means a prestissomo Gigue - nor even a Gigue. It is more like, 'The Musical Offering' and needs an Andante con vivo tempo. If we analyze its counterpoint (I found nothing on the internet about the relationship between Mozart and Scarlatti) we will maybe see it shows signs of the fingerprints of extra-terrestial life. And if you play it on the organ, you must sustain that last C to the end.

Dear Daniel! I am starting to feel that nowadays classical music is going in the wrong direction. It is getting more and more dissonant and unpleasant for listening. Even though my case is different from yours - I always liked baroque music - what really helps in my opinion is to analize a piece, for example a fugue. Finding the individual themes and contrapuncts, calls and answers in the piece, marking them and at last listening to the piece and recognizing it all helped me a great deal to understand a piece better. Additionally you dont have to do it for each and every other fugue you listen to since you begin to more and more understand the structure and rules of that type of music.

Dear Barenboim, does a piece of music's length contribute significantly (if at all) to its grandiosity? Works like the Liszt Sonata, Beethoven's Hammerklavier or Rach's variations on Chopin's funeral prelude are very long pieces indeed but is a work like Beethoven's 22nd piano sonata any less grand? Or even Claire du Lune by Debussy?

tempo is the most important decision a musician should take...and the last one....thank you.... don´t you think that in some unfortunate tragic cases the tempo should be zero...no tempo...not playing that piece at all... because there is no inspiration, no muse. has it happened informally to you?...and even if you have started playing have you ever stopped because of it...

Why Bach is great Mr barenboim? I can't understand it! Just so understandable music, so straight, why it is fantastic? I don't mean music should be uneasy but when I listen to bach, I don't get any feeling like Beethoven or mozart, it's so logical and... I don't know how to say that... Just I don't know how to listening to his music to understand it in my way.

Hola Maestro.

I was just thinking while listening to words I don't really understand...and mean this in the best possible way. I have learned so many interesting and good things about Russian, German, various south American country's culture from Jewish musicians.. that is they represent their countries of birth fantastically. Why was that something I noticed? I really do not know.

Simplicity in complexity ? Yes Hamlet consists of single words, one after the other. In Bach's case, I find that my brain only processes one line whilst several others are going on. A pleasurable process all the same.
