Have Been turning 20 years and learned so much from your video, not from watching but listening. It makes the video so much ,more better to learn from. Keep talking makes your videos a cut above the videos that just show quiet turning.---keep talking.

Richard Raffan's tutorials are outstanding, and Richard is well-known for utilising a radiused skew chisel (which helps to minimise catches) All my skew chisels with the exception of my ½" Hamlet skew chisel are radiused.

I guess I was one of the lucky ones. I never had much trouble with the skew. Far from a master but not afraid of it. I started using it before I heard how hard it is to use plus the horror story’s. Great vid as always Sam.

Brilliant video Sam, thank you 😊. I have struggled with V and chamfer cuts with the skew, getting many frustrating run backs and your video has addressed my problem. I was letting the cutting edge contact the chamfer instead of just the point, your still shot was an excellent example of where my skew should be positioned. Thank you once again Sam, happy New Year to you and your good lady wife 😊💐😊💐

Thanks Sam, I've been turning for a couple of years and have avoided using the skew for most of that time but lately I have been doing more spindle turning and realized that the skew could speed up things so have just recently been trying my hand at it since I have gotten quite comfortable with other gouges. Love the close ups.

So, you use a skew as a scraper to start and then use it as a skew? Interesting to note the difference between US and UK turners.

@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 6 лет назад
Bigger spindle....bigger tool. That is pretty basic advice. But I think the confusion is that we can use a really big skew on small stuff. Maybe not so much in the other direction. I would just experiment. Sam

Thank you for this inspirational video! As a wannabe turner (not even a novice) practice tips are great, but also a reminder that even someone as experienced as yourself find these practice sessions useful, if not necessary, to be a good turner. With the flattery out of the way, it looks in your cove cut as you only switch to having the long point leading at the very end of the cut, was that intentional or were you just being tired?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 6 лет назад
Jacob The cove cut I did was terrible. I usually do use a spindle gouge for this cut. And I may have been tired as well. Sam

Lol, I just clued in that your puppy never stops roaming. Now that I think about it, I think I have seen the little roamer on many of your videos roaming, but will have to look back at some to see if the little roamer has roamed before.
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 6 лет назад
Yes, I like that. She IS a roamer. She is usually looking for a ball, hiding a ball, or wanting me to throw a ball.....to get all this accomplished-she roams. Yep. Sam
@thebears8955
@thebears8955 6 лет назад
Thanks Sam. Watching your videos has provided me with the confidence to start practicing with the skew. One question and sorry if I missed it, what speed were you doing most of the turning for this video. I was having some trouble with my skew work not being very flat (I was turning a piece of ash and while the finish was smooth it had waves in it) and not sure if that was due to the poor quality of my skew (cheap set of tools that came with the lathe) or if my speed was too slow maybe? any thoughts? Much thanks Sam, Ted M
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 6 лет назад
I am constantly changing my speed so I am not sure if I can answer that. But generally turn as fast as you can-SAFELY. Re: you problem with ash. You may be turning too slowly. But the grain in ash is hard-soft-hard-soft so you may git an uneven surface. But ash is difficult cause it is basically very hard. Sam
@thebears8955
@thebears8955 6 лет назад
You were right Sam, the ash with the hard, soft, hard, soft grain was causing the ripples in my work. I tried a piece of box elder with much better result!! :) Thanks Sam, Ted.

Hi Sam, I'm a newbie woodturner from the UK. I've learned quite a bit from your videos. However I'm still getting catches which ruin my pieces. I'm using soft pine only because it's cheap and readily available. I'm finding the finish to be poor and if I try to clean it up I end up with a catch. Can you advise me if this softwood is unsuitable for turning ? Cheers
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 5 лет назад
Softer woods are fine for turning but can leave a finish that is inferior to that resulting from a nice hard wood. I suspect if you are getting catches you are losing bevel contact. If you are getting catches from a skew chisel-join the club my friend......What might help is grinding your skew chisel to a 40º angle or so. Mine are ground more to a 25-30 º angle. This is really sharp and can be much more grabby. Just takes lots of practice. Sam

Always amazing videos! You are a wonderful teacher but still the skew chisel is my least favorite tool on the rack. LOL. I promise you I will try harder and practice more but I was really noticing how your chisels are sharpened. Mine is like from the factory with a very small bevel on both sides. Yours even looks like it might be rounded a little bit? Happy New Year my friend and I'm looking very much forward to another year of your videos!
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER

Thanks Gary I do put a slight convex curve on my skews. But lately I have been playing with a very straight grind. I have always had a curved cutting edge and I am experimenting a bit. Sam

You may not be able to use the point-which is important for some cuts. But are you saying this will prevent catches-interesting. Sam

WYOMINGWOODTURNER I'm not a Turner yet but I intend to build a treadle lathe this year so I am watching as many videos as possible. I am a joiner by trade n I use many machines except a lathe. It just seems logical to avoid having catches. Takes away having leading or trailing edges.

Hmm, havent looked at the Whole video, but i only see scraping and not cutting. why dont you hold it in a 45 dregree angle to make CUTS ?
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER
@WYOMINGWOODTURNER 5 лет назад
Yes I suggest you do watch the entire video. However the main point I would make is in reference to the title of the video. This video deals with practicing and may be directed to those who have not yet mastered the skew chisel. At 2:40 in to the video I am making a peeling "cut". This is a good place to start if you are new to using a skew chisel. At 4:40 in to the video I introduce more of a shear "cut" which is the next step beyond a simple peel. Are you starting to get the progression here of skills using a skew chisel. Now....in your comment you say, "I only see scraping and not cutting." So it appears you only watched the first few clips when I was turning on the bottle stopper. I won't go into any further play-by-play of the video. Sam

Milind, I am still getting catches. And I am still practicing. The best thing to do is to use a green Limb two or 3 inches in diameter and just practice on that. Try not to use really hardwood to practice with good luck Sam
