In this episode, we decide to combine exploring the beautiful city of Prague with completing a food tour at the same time. We manage to try a number of dishes that we believe are traditional or popular in the Czech Republic and also visit many attractions along the way, including the Prague Astronomical Clock.

Steak tartar (colloquially tartar) is a dish made from raw beef. The basis of steak tartare is beef tenderloin, but also fake tenderloin, which is finely scraped with the tip of a sharp knife, or ground. It is served together with chopped onions, mustard, salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce. Depending on the taste, sweet paprika, chili, cumin, ketchup and other spices are often added. Everything is finished with a raw yolk and all the ingredients are mixed. The exact composition of steak tartare varies not only by country, but also by each diner. Outside the Czech Republic, you can find other seasonings such as anchovies, capers, tabasco, cognac or pickled cucumbers. In the Czech Republic, steak tartare is usually served on toast smeared with garlic. In other countries, it is served on light toasted bread or smørrebrød, among other things. In Belgium, steak tartare is traditionally served with fried potato chips. Steak tartare can be prepared "a la chef", i.e. according to the chef's taste, or all the ingredients are served together with the meat and the diner himself does the mixing.

Wow! Thankyou so much for all of the information. We had never heard of this dish prior to coming to Czech Republic so it was certainly a dish we had to try whether we thought we would like it or not. It would be interesting to try it at different restaurants to see the difference in how they prepare/serve it 😊

Nice description. One tiny little thing: you probably meant caraway, not cumin, which is what we call "římský kmín", typically used in mexican and indian cousine.

dávám laik za odvahu, ale jíst tatarák ráno, topinky bez česneku a hlavně bez piva .... to je hřích.😎

I love Tartare. In my city we do it little bit different. We put meat on plate and all the stuff aside and you made mix exactly as you want plus we add raw yolk in it.

I was really skeptical about Tartare but it really won me over, I'm kinda sad about how much you didn't like it! Yeah, not getting a hot chimney cake is disappointing! It's not that good cold, it's whole different experience when it's warm and still fluffy!

Haha well I’m glad you liked the Tartare. I really tried to like it but unfortunately my taste buds said “no”. Ahh yes ok cool, will definitely have to give that a go next time!

mhm, I always snoop around a little and make sure they don't have any chimney cakes sitting around. You will wait a bit longer but worth the wait. You will realize how to spot them I'm not from Prague either, I just have visited 4 times but learned to spot the fresh ones on my first holiday so you should be able to. Maybe you will need to buy from a smaller shop to be able to see and eat standing up but well, it's worth it in my opinion :)

As an American it took a lot for me to try steak tartare, but once I did I love it and my friends and I always get it as a sharing appetizer when we go out. I would never have it anywhere but in the Czech Republic, however. It's a Czech national dish and they know how to prepare it. I wouldn't trust it anywhere else. You also put way too much on. You rub the garlic clove on the bread first, then put a very thin layer of mince on. When we get it it comes with a bunch of spices, egg yolk, then you mix it together first. The bread is also fried where we get it. I think for this place- which is an amazing butcher shop, it is more meant for takeaway and to prepare at home, than eat there.
@TheRoamingPickels
@TheRoamingPickels 4 месяца назад
@@stevemcgowen wow, that information would have been good to know before we tried it 😅 that makes sense though, we thought it was way too much meat compared to the amount of bread but we felt we didn’t have another option as that was the amount it came with haha. Maybe we will have to try it again some day, but do it the way you have described it!

@@TheRoamingPickels I'm fortunate to have tried it first with friends in Prague, so I can see why the way you had it would be off putting.
@saiien2

It's actually quite good. You just need to overcome the block that it is a raw meat. When it's well prepared, and mixed with spices etc it really delicious. It also depends where will you get it. Sometimes even raw egg yolk is served with it too.

Wow! Steak tartare in Prague was really good price. I had it two weeks ago in a Manhattan French bistro for A$39 and it was half the serving size of the one you had in Prague. Btw some steak tartare was made from horse meat in France. Steak tartare in Milan that I tried was good too. Great that you had tried it. I love trying local food which I’ve never had before. 😂

Wow that sounds very expensive! Unfortunately, neither of us could honestly say we enjoyed it but like you said, we also enjoy trying local food and you won't know if you never try it 😊
