June 23, 2022 Drumheller to Hanna, Alberta
A day full of wind, rain and hail. I climb too many hills to mention and get caught in a terrible rain/hail storm while in the middle of nowhere. A scary experience that leads to free coffee from a stranger on arrival in Hanna and an amazing experience with my Warmshowers host.
June 24, 2022 Hanna to Oyen, Alberta
Strong wind continues and it knocks my bike into the ditch on one of my stops. A few things brake, but nothing that can't be fixed. I stop at a large truck stop and find a few goodies that cyclists could use. I arrive in Oyen and don't feel comfortable staying at the municipal campground. I ride around town and knock on a window at a Roman Catholic rectory. I am invited in to spend the night in the guestroom. An amazing gift after a tough day.
June 25, 2022 Oyen to the Saskatchewan border
I leave Oyen Alberta and continue riding East towards Saskatchewan. I pass multiple fields of canola in full bloom. The scent was divine. A few kilometers later that divine scent was replaced by manure. You smell all the things while on a bike tour.

Yellow flowers are likely to be Canola crops. When I worked in Alberta there’d be vast yellow fields of that plant. Those prairie storms are impressive. We’d have nice sun, then 30 minutes later there’d be a few inches of hail or snow in the ground which would then melt away in the sun. One day we were stuck in the air (airplane) when conducting surveys when a storm came in and covered the airport. We just circled for a bit until the storm moved off and we could land. I got some good storm cloud pictures that summer. Your rectory experience reminds me of mine. I’d got to Oban, Scotland. All hotels, B&Bs were full, the next train out wasn’t till the following day. As I wandered I spotted four backpackers my age with Canadian flags on their packs. They were looking for a place too. As it turns out, we knew people in common (one guy’s roommate had been my dorm neighbour when I was in school), so they invited me to tag along with them. We checked a church/rectory and the priest let us stay in the common room overnight. I was happy because my plan had been to huddle down behind some wooden palettes leaning against a seafood processing building in an alley to stay out of the worst of the rain and wind (and hope no one would see me or rob me). It was a good night chatting with them and sharing stories.

Yes, you're right - the flowers were fields of canola and I rode through many more on while in the Prairies. The storms I encountered were fierce, they seemed scary in the moment because I was so exposed and there wasn't any shelter. But they were fast and furious and yet another experience in my touring adventures. Your story of meeting people in Scotland, who knew your acquaintances, is excellent. The world is so small! And what a story you now have to share. This was the first church I stayed at, there would be many more on my journey.

Another awesome video Agnieszka! I am heart warmed at how your optimism feeds your resilience and resourcefulness!!! Yes, as I have flown down a valley to many a town (since they historically are built on rivers, which have cut grooves over time) I KNOW that to get out, a price will be paid! But hopefully it is with rest/replenishment from the town. Great idea to get total weight from a truck scale! And thanks for the helpful tip about essential suppl4ies at the truck stop! Lots of cyclist friendly stuff where you might not expect it. Ya, the 'trouble' with the prairies is you can see the weather coming for miles. I remember watching cloud shadows when I was little in Brandon Manitoba. And what weather!! Such wind and hail! And you just peadaled on through! But you need to tell the bike it only Stops/Drops/&Rolls when its on fire ;) !! I love the little vignettes you give us of places like the Small World Cafe! These add a lot of charm/character to your videos! Super good that you are modeling for us all (especially women) that a touring cyclist needs to trust/listen to/not override their intuition when it comes to safety when camping!!! And look how your initiative to knock and ask for safe harbour turned out! A simple patch of grass was asked for and full accommodation was offered! But nothing would have happened if you didn't take the initiative/ courage to knock in the first place! Such super material! I'll be watching for the next one, whenever it is ready!

Loved your video 🥳. 3 weeks ago I rode my recumbent trike from Edmonton to Medicine Hat. I stopped in Youngstown for brunch at the Small World Cafe. I was overwhelmed! I was warmly greeted by a table full of the most lovely ladies who enquired as to where I came from, where I was going and how long I had been traveling. They were lovely. I had a typical Canadian lunch that I’ll remember for a long time…. Chicken curry soup and a big bowl of poutine. When I was paying Paul, the host and cashier, he refused to take a tip…. Sorry we don’t accept tips! I love this place for the wonderful people, delicious food and facility. I’ve been telling every one I know who travels the area about the Small World Cafe. On leaving Youngstown a car across the road pulled over and we chatted about my Burly bike trailer. He had twice toured across CANADA and hadn’t seen such a contraption especially on a trike. All I could think of was, gosh, I’m only going to Medicine Hat and back and he’s crossed CANADA twice. Sure made me feel humble. I love my Burly. The best investment I made for touring. On my way back to Edmonton I did Hwy 9 to Hanna but in the opposite direction. Cactus corner is always a necessary stop, I know it well. I ended up buying a wrench there for my trike from the tool rack you were looking at. Yes, cross winds can be bad but being on a recumbent trike makes it so much easier. I enjoy the videos. So sorry to hear about you getting hit. Glad your safe. Keep Riding!🥳🥳🥳

Ah ... Amazing to hear you also stopped at the Small World Cafe. An unexpected gem in that small village. I think they see a lot of cyclists riding through there. Also, what a treat to have met that met who rode across twice. Recently, when riding the Erie Canal Trail, I stayed at a Warmshowers host's place, and he had ridden across the US 3 times! Knowing how hard that is, it's amazing to hear people take it up multiple times. Good for them. But truth be told, if I could take time off every year to do this ride, I would do it in a heartbeat.

You experienced Alberta at its "best". The wind and storms are very typical in early summer. When you're lucky enough to have a real tail wind, it will make for a super fast ride. Truckstops are great places to get fixing up stuff and gummi bears. Awesome priest. That room was a blessing! Oh no, now you've got chain problems too. Maybe a missed shift? The yellow flowers are Canola. Saskatchewan roads are even worse 😁. Great video. thanks for sharing!

Ah ... I feel so lucky to have experienced the best of Alberta, then. :) I was unlucky in the Prairies and had some gnarly head and side wind. I did get pure tailwind when riding in Newfoundland though, and I LOVED it. I'm not sure what was wrong with the chain, it never fell off again, but I'm sure the tumble the bike experienced the previous day (it flipped twice before landing in the ditch) had something to do with it. Yes, you're right - the roads in Saskatchewan were atrocious. Even more so on side roads, which I ended up taking through the province.

@@WheelsonaBike how’s your solar panel working out for you? Could you do a review of it plz and compare charging on cloudy days vs clear sunny days, vs wall charging, & how long it takes and how much percent charged when you get a chance? I’m thinking of purchasing a solar panel for my trip next yr. I don’t have a dynamo. Not very many quality vids on RU-vid on this.
@WheelsonaBike
@WheelsonaBike Год назад
I ended up sending the solar panel home as it was heavy and I wasn't using it enough and found that the two batteries from Anker worked very well. The solar panel worked very well, but they are slow. I used it to charge up my powerbank, but sun in Canada this past summer was fickle and I decided that I'd rather get rid of the weight since I was making do with the batteries alone.

I do follow Itchy Boots and definitely borrowed from her thumbnail design. I design thumbnails in Canva and although the font isn't exactly like the one she uses, I like the esthetic.

I've had my bike fall over a few times and panniers pretty much make it a non-issue for most falls. That is actually one reason I haven't tried bike-packing, no protection for my bike!
@WheelsonaBike
@WheelsonaBike Год назад
That's an interesting point. You're right, bikepacking bags would not dampen the fall the same way.

I rode into Drumheller from the South a number of years ago. At the end of a long day of riding I was looking forward to coasting down the hill and getting to the campground. Had to pedal down the hill into a brutal headwind. Boo hoo hoo.

Ahhh ... I know your pain exactly. Pedaling downhill into a headwind is awful.

Hail is definitely not fun I feel for you riding in the prairies I avoid them at all cost unless I really have to. Living in Alberta usually I had south or most of the time west. Keep going and be safe. How did you make out after the accident? Hope is all good now
@WheelsonaBike
@WheelsonaBike Год назад
Hail was new to me, and this one wasn't too bad. I encountered more in Saskatchewan and had to take shelter, because it was hurting me. I continued riding after the accident. I was lucky in that I had no injuries, only scratches and bruises, so after two weeks I resumed my ride and finished crossing Canada in Newfoundland. I was very lucky.

@@WheelsonaBike good to hear, hail can be misty we encountered it last year on the way to Utah in Montana on motorcycle with the speed it hurts a lot we made under first overpass to wait it out it was some experience as well 😆

hello, I'm following you from France and I have a question to ask you about your kona sutra bike, I have a project to buy a travel bike, and I'm still hesitating between several bikes, among which this kona sutra, I asked another Spanish traveler a question, he told me that the kona sutra is not comfortable, who do you think, you who have ridden this bike a lot? and if there are a few things to improve in this bike, what will it be? thanks in advance 👍
@WheelsonaBike
@WheelsonaBike Год назад
Thanks for getting in touch. Bikes are very personal, so I'd want to know why the Spanish rider didn't think the Sutra was comfortable. Was it the handlebars, the saddle, the reach? So many factors can contribute to that answer. Personally, I love my touring bike. I had zero mechanical issues during my cross Canada tour, not even one flat (I installed Schwalbe Marathon Touring Plus tires before leaving on the trip). I find the bike very comfortable, but I did get a fit done to make sure it's adjusted properly to my body. In my experience, the bike is incredibly dependable, very well made and an absolute pleasure to ride. The question is - what does comfort on a bike mean to you?
@kamuzu
@kamuzu 10 месяцев назад
You didn't feel safe at the Oyen campground? Why what was wrong? You bike alone across Canada yet a small town campground scares you into a rectory?? Something fishy about that story.
@WheelsonaBike
@WheelsonaBike 10 месяцев назад
Here's what I learned from my previous tours - trust my intuition. As a solo rider I tend to be more cautious than if I were traveling with someone else. This particular campground was very run down. The bathroom was dirty, things were broken and there were very old, dilapidated structures on the grounds. I also couldn't reach anyone from the municipality (I called) to talk to them. I wasn't comfortable being there, so I moved on. Nothing "fishy" happened, but I'm glad that I made the decision I did, as I wouldn't have slept at all that night, had I stayed there.
