The "It's just a prank, bro!" excuse will never fail to instantly fill me with rage. People seem to think that saying that will instantly negate their terrible actions.
"It's just a prank bro" is the equivalent of any teenager going "IT'S FOR A SCIENCE PROJECT MOM!" When confronted with something druge related being found out. It's just so obviously bullshit it leaves you going "wait.... they ACTUALLY SAID THAT?!?!?"
I'm surprised Colby didn't get much backlash for participating in the prank, bc without Colby's consent and going along with it, the prank never would've happened to begin with. As someone who has been in a situation with a g u n involved where I truly felt my life was about to end, it's something I wouldn't even wish on my worst enemy. That was absolutely terrifying and the feeling is indescribable. Sam was not acting what so ever, and regardless of what he said I know he has been traumatized from that bc that is a very real situation that could happen to them. That wasn't a prank and it was taken way too far.
It's kind of amazing that it took *this long* for a "prankster" to run into a gun-carrying victim who decided to shoot them in response to having their lives threatened.
@sargentocapitao9668 Generally in America most allow you to own guns. It's a constitution thing. Funny thing is most people still don't get a carry license. That's what allows you to have one in public. Even then there's a further distinction between conceal carry and open carry. That's the main reason these guys don't get shot. Most people just aren't willing to risk misunderstanding a situation
@@sargentocapitao9668indeed, every state allows you to own a firearm, just some are more restrictive with what specifically you can own, and like to make the entire process as annoying & expensive as possible in an effort to discourage you from even bothering, which results in there being less people to vote against more restrictions, as is the case in my home state of New Jersey, where only about 10% of the population even owns any kind of firearm (which includes air guns and bb guns, because NJ). carrying a gun around is a different story though, and is still rapidly changing, some states have had constitutional carry for a long time, which means you dont need any sort of license or permit to conceal carry, and then you have places like my state that require you pay $200 for two years plus several hundreds more in difficult training that is on the level of like state troopers, and after all that you are still subject to a number of restrictions as to where and how you are allow to carry and use your gun. up until the landmark SCOTUS case NYSRPA v. Bruen case just last year, we along with several other states effectively didnt have conceal carry, nevermind open carry, as the permits required you demonstrate a "justifiable need" i.e. you either had reason to believe your life was in imminent danger, or you needed it because of your job, like you're say some flavor of cop, or judge, or politician, and it was still "may issue" so you could still be denied for no reason at all, or in other words you had to be one of the privledged few to be allowed to carry, and for your average normie the answer was simply "no". after this the state tried to make everywhere aside from your own property and the street outside, into a "sensitive location" like a school or post office, in which the penaltie for getting caught there were felony charges i.e. you go to state prison for like 5-10 years and forever lose the right to possess a firearm and vote. we also had some stupid restriction that required that every time get in your car you must unholster and unload your concealed gun, then store it in a car safe or your trunk, then take it out reload, and re-conceal when you got out, all in full view of the public where it was likely some karen might see it, freak out and call the cops, usually telling them a version of events that would result in them showing up guns drawn and shouting commands, assuming they dont just mag dump and ask questions later, fully confident that qualified immunity and the "blue wall of silence" would shield them from any and all reprocussions and accountability. also you had to purchase liability insurance that didnt exist due to being banned years prior as so called "murder insurance". thankfully those latter two plus many of the banned locations and a number of other restrictions were removed via a federal court judge rulling them unconstitutional, many unfortunately remain.
@@DixieSchizo not suprised, and I dont think that was the only such incident either, unfortunate for both parties even without taking into account "stand your ground" law and the state's general attitude toward self defense, but hey, that's the price of being an idiot and society's enabling and glorification of that behavior, prankster dude fucked around and found out. Here in NJ we dont have "stand your ground" and instead have "duty to retreat", this being in regard to defense in public, not inside your home, however we still have some fairly strict standards to be met for it count as "self defense" in addition to the general "I believe I am in imminent threat of death or bodily harm", and it is commonly believed that the state will still attempt to crucify you in court regardless of justified or not. also, cant have hollowpoint bullets in your carry gun, you can only use them on the range or in defense of your home/place of business in which you are the owner, gotta use either standard FMJ or polymer tipped bullets (hornady critical defense being what the state police reccomends) for carry, otherwise that's one more charge against you, and it's commonly reccomended you shy away from using any exotic rounds or brands with "scary" sounding names as they might try to argue that you had a "murder boner" or otherwise had intent to shoot somebody.
The magic guy definitely did it the best. Interesting ideas, completely harmless, and left the most important audience, the people the prank is being pulled on, actually enjoying it as much as the rest of us.
I loved those original pranks where it was just goofy. "Confuse, don't abuse" is always the right motto. The weatherman in the elevator was fucking brilliant.
I agree with you both. I know the “victim” was in on it, but the victim’s friend was not. If I were him, I don’t think I’d ever want to be around my friend again, even if we did constantly prank each other (which has to get old). Watching him cry and plead for his friend’s life made me nauseated - I felt so awful for the poor guy.
This kind of prank (if they're not in on it) could give someone PTSD. Finding out it isn't real after isn't going to undo the stress on the brain. I do hope (and believe) everyone was in on it. I just hope that it didn't inspire others to try something similar with someone who didn't know about it. These "pranks" can be so harmful, and the people not realising it's staged can end up hurting someone or getting hurt themselves.
kinda surprised the acid pranks werent mentioned. they took place in london where people would run up to strangers and either throw water on them, throw water next to them or just pretend to throw water on them. but it was done at a time where acid attacks were a big thing in london. other than that, great video! ive always personally hated pranks on youtube since theyre usually just fake and insensitive.
@@Darth_Bateman no, it REALLY isn't. I'm not trying to say what constitutes good / bad trolling, but if you actually know the story behind that shit, it's fucking horrifying. I appreciate some good trolling but that's not trolling, that's just completely fucking unhinged behaviour that should land you in prison or psych ward. I know you're trying to be edgy but this ain't it chief. I suppose school-shootings are hilarious too?
I just got to that part and I’m like. “ I’m sad he’s dead but mother Motherfucker held a family at knife point and thought everyone will think he’s joking ?”
@@MrChristo93If that's a fetish then 99,99% of men have it under specific circumstances. Fart jokes will never not be funny. If confused search Leslie Nielsen
"After peeing in his own mouth for a prank, Joeysalads would retire from pranking and decide to run for political office." Is not only the greatest sentence ever uttered, its also the single most apt statement on the decline of western civilization. WTF are we even doing as a species.
The guy actually seems really sincere about turning his act around. Basically he’s having the opposite arc of his former nemesis, Ethan Klein. Seriously, look into him nowadays. It’s pretty weird.
The best friend execution "prank" is nothing but the epitome of vile. While his best friend defended him, in that moment, the experience of fear and utter shock are real and have the potential to literally traumatise you for life. regardless of whether it turns out to be a "prank".
Hearing about all these evil pranks I'm honestly surprised that more RU-vidr Pranksters haven't been arrested or at least held accountable for their actions. Especially Sam Pepper- he should've been thrown in jail and registered a sex offender the moment the allegations against him came to light.
I like the idea of Martin having his life fixed because of Vitality trying to one-up other versions of pranks in the genre. Truly the prank of all time.
in fairness he was high and didnt really know what was going on so i dont totally blame him, i doubt if he was sober he wouldve done that. still his fault but hes not like evil
What Prank channels taught me was to never prank your spouse or people you love cause that’ll ruin whatever relationships you’ve developed before they came to be a bond.
I prank my loved ones all the time. But I make sure they're gentle pranks and none of this abusive crap. It's better for everyone if you play ones that make the "victim" laugh after with you.
it's funny how the least "crazy" pranks, the ones that were actually believable and humorous, the earliest ones made by the earliest channels, are the ones that are still around today chasing clout was never a long-term sustainable thing. the realest youtubers are the ones in it for the long game
The only “prank” videos I would watch are from “Magic of Rahat” where it would be a skeleton or teddy bear going through a drivethru. Those were relatively harmless and quite enjoyable since it wasn’t mean-spirited. Edit: Just saw that Tom mentioned Rahat, very nice
Rahat's scandal was bullshit too. My man showed records of him sending the money to the homeless man, and still the twitter mob successfully cancelled him. If you watch the video where the homeless man talks about "how Rahat made my life hell" you can tell he's all strung out on drugs. No good deed goes unpunished, I suppose
Really ironic that the commentary channels that called out prank channels either fell off from their own drama (gradeA), or are now really divisive figures (ethan).
@@70dume well yeah he still has a huge fanbase, whats wild is the army of people like yourself who make it their hobby to hate on him lol. Hes only had so much hate because of other divisive youtubers hating on him. You can tell which fanbase his haters come from by what terms they use to describe him lol. Nothing but parrots
@@cherrybomber69 i drifted away from him by myself because i started to see him devolve into the very thing he was criticizing, the etika/keemstar drama where he basically was talking out of his ass about how keemstar made etika khs and went after his sponsors etc. Who told you which content creator i'm parroting for since you seem to know so well??? He's literally the painfully average political redditor/twitter user now, anything that used to make him interesting from his creativity to well thought out and funny arguments against dipshits turned into him being a crybaby about the "alt-right"/anyone disagreeing with him and how everything is their fault. Went hard after SOG for calling him out on donation shaming saying it was false, turns out there were clips he was frustrated rich people didn't donate enough, and donation shaming is something i hate. Any amount of money donated helps, there isn't such a thing as "you should have donated more!" because thats just toxic and chances are the people saying that didnt donate anything. He isolated himself into the "twitter echochamber", nothing more. Call me a parrot how you want or whatever you believe i am, just giving my detailed thoughts on him (used to love him before also lol) and I am not making it a hobby cuz you think so apparently, I can tell you my dude that I do not spend more than a few minutes a month thinking about someone like Ethan.
Thing about Jackass is that its a show where dudes were just being a..... well jackass.. by torturing themselves in the most unconventional ways and they only do it to themselves, not others. You can argue that they have other people involved into their skits but its more like making a fool out of themselves in public rather than actually pranking them
It’s rather interesting to see how the humble beginnings of prank channels was just actually relatively harmless and simple actual pranks, to a bunch of awful people harassing women as a “prank”.
It is fascinating, I was mainly watching DanTDM that may have watched really harmless pranks, but none to any degree these terrible pranksters have shown through the years.
I remember seeing the Sam and Colby video, i was terrified and the way Sams face and his crys was just horrible to watch, the video made me tear up and it did make me call my best friend to say i love them but i dont think pranks like that should excuse terrible behavior.
Really? The Vevo, Late Night talkshow and unending vlog hellhole that was RU-vid half a decade ago? Back when recommendations were utter ass and you stuck to your subscriptions like your life depended on it.
@@joujou264 well it's not much better these days, there's still constant late night show hosts in the trending section, not to mention RU-vidrs having to constantly censor things because RU-vid doesn't like bad words
@@joujou264 Yes. Several channels that I used to watch have been terminated/voluntarily shut down because they're too edgy for modern RU-vid. I still stick to my subscriptions.
I gotta say, with so many RU-vidrs being revealed as being secretly terrible people, prank channels are a true breath of fresh air by being openly terrible people instead
Man, this H3H3 guy sure is a wonderful person calling out terrible people for their stupid and horrible actions. No doubt he has a bright future ahead of him!
@@derp195they were tho. Leafy was the fastest growing channel at the time. However there’s a bit of a shift here since Sam’s career was coming to an end as Leafys was starting. There was a complete shift in RU-vid landscape because of ads at the time so that’s why leafy was banned and all those channels switched up their format. (I should know im the one who commented leafy come back for over 500 days until he was unbanned)
Holy crap. I can’t believe I’ve never seen the assassination video. That is heartbreaking and truly traumatic. How did farting in a grocery story get to permanently scaring and likely inducing PTSD to an individual you consider a friend. That’s literally psychological torture… I haven’t finished the video but if there’s not criminal charges brought and a lawsuit filed then we should truly reevaluate the integrity of our laws.
I'm never going to understand people who either prank the public, or broadcast their pranks to the public. Pranks are a type of comedy that only works in a dynamic where the people are really close and get it. The point gets lost entirely when you're just bombarding someone out on the street.
34:40 I love how he gets called out for joking about murder rather than genuinely traumatizing a friend in one of the most vile videos ever uploaded by a major creator on this website.
Not gonna lie, seeing Laineybot being quoted stunned me for a second lol. Please do a video on the history of Onision, because that rabbit hole of lies and gaslighting has been a front-row seat into the core of narcissism and injustice
Even though there are *so many* videos on Greg I would actually enjoy Tom's perspective on it. Esp if he can fit in how Repzion and others have likewise gone off the deep end lately.
as someone wo lost my best friend... i'm disgusted by the 'killing your best friend prank'. i felt the same pain again just by watching that filthy shit.
I know right?!? Especially the ones where the "prankster" got physical.... I carry a gun, "legally" and that zombie prank in Miami would have probably caught me a body...
Probably cause most of them fake and most people in the hood aint actually like that and if they are lemme tell u even acts of belived self defense are hard to justify in court
45:00 ah yes, the Desert Eagle, known for its lack of bullet penetration and overall small bullet caliber... c'mon now, even 12 year olds who grew up playing Modern Warfare 2 knew of its strengths. It's called a Hand Cannon for a reason.
I never played COD in my life but I discovered the Dessert Eagle and how powerful it was via a Tomb Raider game my cousin played on PC, when I was a kid in Nigeria. The name just stuck out to me and I also remember it being bigger than her pistols and being able to kill tigers in one shot in the game. Cool times😌

Tom, I can't eat food. I had a surgery recently that caused me to lose the ability to swallow. I'm surviving off your content, it keeps me running. I'm going to need one hour plus video every hour. Thx
@@TurkeyTom Tom please don't rush the videos man, take your time to write and edit them. I'd rather wait a month for every video but for it to be good rather than a video every week but it's uninteresting
That's just Darwin's effect on the play. I really don't understand how you could be dumb enough to think a single book would stop a round from a Desert Eagle. There we're two people dumb enough to not realise such a thing.
Why they considered that weapon out of all the options is baffling to me. This prank as a whole is the dumbest thing ive ever heard of, but you really went for the biggest cal. Not a .22 or 9 just the worst option
Man, you can really see how stuff begins to fall apart as not only boundaries are pushed beyond a dangerous limit, but then the people in the genre start to lose all sense of awareness, becoming dangerous people just for attentio
16:51 I actually remember these videos. I used to be homeless and I knew right away that it was fake. A bunch of my friends were reposting like "this is amazing, what a wholesome thing to do" and I was like "this is fake" and they called me a hater, some even blocked/unfriended me but then a few years later, the JoeySalads exposes were posted, and all of the people who called me a hater came back and apologized. They don't question me when I say something is sus/staged/fake anymore

Yeah, Fousey getting the shit slapped out of his drunk ass and then everybody just abandoning him right there is still one of my favorite things that ever happened on YT.
In terms of prank calls, one of my favorites was that one brotha that got prank called with a Joe Pesci soundboard. His reactions were so explosive and over the top, they made a soundboard with his quotes, to prank call other people with. At one point, they even called him with his own soundboard, resulting in a hilarious argument with himself.
The prank on sam with shooting colby always hits me in a diffrent way... like i loved these boys for years and watch their content all the time and shit seeing sam really thinking colby is getting shot is just so fucked up...
Glad to see Tom hasn't been canceled by the Gunt for playing vidya games on stream with the madman Micheal Alberto. That was a pretty serious prank to pull.
"It's just a prank/social experiment, bro!" Is still a very common sarcastic joke to this day, and will probably remain so for many years to come. Despite the death of that video genre so long ago, it has survived.
Alright, to Vitaly's credit, he ACTUALLY GAVE to the homeless. He may have filmed it, but it genuinely WAS a story of this guy turning his life around with some help. Which is incredible. He's LEAGUES better than Fousey with that.
I don't get the double standards of filming acts of "charity". Mr. Beast does it, and he's the best person ever. A genuinely good guy. Someone else does it, it's only for clout. A greedy individual. I think it's all for clout, gotta make money somehow I get that. I just hate how people credit those they like as holyer (holier?) than thou while scrutinizing others for doing the same or similar. It's sickening.

I miss Rahat. His pranks were the wholesome kind. The mindfuck kind. Make you question reality but do no harm. Except the two-story fall prank. That was fucked.
I remember people thinking the "Jugging" prank trend was funny, where people would pretend to slip and fall, slamming milk jugs on the floor, creating a huge mess. If you make a mess for others to clean up, you are just a shitty human
Gallon smashing. It's hilarious. You're correct about the mess it creates but it's something very unexpected for someone to do, which is sort of how humor works.
@@anonamatron it's too destructive and creates too many issues for other people to clean up to be funny, to me. Always just saw it as obnoxious. Unexpected shit can be plenty funny without causing issues for others, like Coning was (grabbing ice cream cones chaotically in a drive thru)

Almost 2 years ago, I lost my best friend to a self-inflicted shot. I didn’t even see it happen myself, but it still changed me. But in that moment in the video, it’s obvious he assumes all of it was real and not “just a prank.” The helplessness, the confusion, the desperation, all of it probably felt real and I empathize with all of it, to an extent. But with that being said, I still couldn’t imagine being in that chair. There are so many words to describe how reprehensible and disgusting that video was, but none of them can describe the raw emotion with all due justice. Having all of grief and sorrow of losing a best friend be boiled down to a RU-vid prank. Absolutely vile.
Well deserved, his videos are so well made, the soothing voice is a plus, especially on a site where screaming into a mic is considered funny and the only way to make a video
I’ll be real, at first I was like “dope a new turkey tom vid”, but then groaned when I saw the topic was pranks, I loath prank vids, but then after watching I’m glad you made this chronicle on this sub-genres of RU-vid vids that have impacted the social media landscape. Surprisingly informative and well documented my dude. Keep making vids like this :)
