Better continue to hope it don't BLOW UP like the oil seal problem in its PW1500G, or the high compressor knife-edge HCF in the PW1100G, or the one-pipe-out cooling of the high turbine. Just wait a bit longer for the NEXT failure. When "gender parity" takes precedent over ENGINEERING then you're DOOMED, just wait. What HORSESHIT. They don't KNOW how to manage a successful engine program = a happy customer. PW only fixes ANYTHING that negatively impacts their financials as they kick the can down the road of rotating managers in and out of programs while the responsibility chases them through their "career." FAA Certification, engines, planes, pilots, people; ALL given nothing but LIP SERVICE. Talk to Airbus or GoFirst about how happy they are over the GTF.

It might work, if PW didn't let the accountants make their design decisions for them, like they did on the TF30, F100, JT9, JT8, PW2000, and PW4000, which were all stalling puking and failing pigs until they got millions in development funds. Those engines and their underfunded development literally cost PW the entire commerical airliner market, the US Air Force F16 fleet, and the US Navy markets. The TF30 literally had a steel explosion band around it to stop the parts from flying through the Navy's F14 airplane. Let's hope PW solves the fan explosion on the GP7000 before more explosion bands are needed for the PW1000Gee, so that it doesn't become the PW1000ohholyshitit'sflyingapart engine.

An increase in fuel efficiency also leads to National Security, as we will be far less dependent on foreign powers for fuel. We won't have to bow to Dictators for fuel. It's a Win Win situation for us on many levels !!!!
@wowalamoiz9489
@wowalamoiz9489 3 года назад
The fuel efficiency gained from geared turbofans won't make USA less dependent on foreign powers from fuel. The efficiency increase isn't large enough for that. I have no doubt in a decade or two, technological advances will make USA (and the rest of the planet) independent of fossil fuels, and the dictators like the Saudi family would have to find a new source of income (tourism?). But geared turbofans? No, this will just save some fuel and money.

I see the gears are weakness in this engine it add complexity to the manufacturing and it could fail more often than normal design, also you could easily achieve the goal of reducing fan speed by connecting the fan to rear turbine and separating the main turbine and the rear turbine, this allow you to design the rear turbine to spin in optimum speed with the fan, btw this idea actually used by many other manufacturers and its work perfectly
@cool2180

I always thought for fans, a higher speed means more air being moved... By dropping the speed with a gearbox increases the torque each blade receives.. Seems that this higher "torque" means more air being moved as well?...
@adventureairinc7355
@adventureairinc7355 6 лет назад
No, it is just more efficient to move more air relativly slow instead of moving less air with a high speed. And there is a limit which is the speed of sound. The tip of the fan blades must not move faster than the speed of sound, otherwise it would create extrem noise and very low efficieny. So in order to increase the fan size you need to reduce the fan speed. You can´t do this on conventional engines without loosing efficency in the inner turbine (hot section). Now with a gear, you can optimize both speeds. Simply use then blades with an higher angle of incidence to get the air move with the same speed.
@eugenegenegene
@eugenegenegene 6 лет назад
Interesting... Always thought that Newton's 3rd Law meant the faster that air is pushed through the engine (i.e. action), the more thrust (reaction) is generated...
@patrickproctor3462
@patrickproctor3462 6 лет назад
Except the fan isn't what produces the thrust if you look at the rotating engine diagram. It's the turbine that does. The fan is meant to divert as much air away from the core as it can to actually reduce noise and keep the core hot without melting, because the hotter it is, the more explosive the burn, and the more thrust per fuel unit burned. If you can slow down the fan but make it bigger, you get the same amount of air in the core but at far more noise-efficient and fuel-efficient performance.

It's still using parts that will wear at the initial high RPM. The devil lives in the details and P&W is still struggling with the technology. Other jet engine manufactures have either got cold feet in the initial design phases or have failed prototypes. If P&W licks this we can expect to see some engines sporting some truly massive fan nacelles in the 18 to 25 foot range that have more diameter than length.

@wowalamoiz9489
@wowalamoiz9489 3 года назад
@@Ausiedundan A lot of people tslk about how turbofans are more efficient because they move a large mass of air at lower speeds- but that makes no sense. A small mass moved at high speeds has the same momentum (mass*velocity) as a large mass of air at lower speeds. The real reason why turbojets are less efficient than turbofans or turboprops is because in a turbojet, most of the thrust must comes from the exhaust. So a minority is used to run the turbine and compressor. But the exhaust carries away a lot of energy as heat. In turbofans and turboprop, the turbines extract more power from the exhaust to run a fan or prop (as well as the compressor), hence reducing losses due to heat.

Railed trains are going to achieve 830 km/h with plain electricity from floor coils. How will this compete with them? 830km/h is near the speed limit for aeroplanes which will stay at 850 km/h forever. Korea and China have already reached 600km/h. And aeroplanes must burn fuel which makes them really bad for the environment.
