Prayer to The Fallen of the Heike | Heike Monogatari [Episode 11, Ending] 

It's important to remember that the director Naoko Yamada is a survivor of the KyoAni arson of 2019, which killed more than 30 people that closely worked with her before and this is her first work after that. Also, I've read that Isao Takahata from Studio Ghibli (the director of the Kaguya-Hime movie) intended to make a movie about the Heike Monogatari but passed away before doing that. I cannot confirm this for sure, but when I watch this scene I feel like there is also some message here about the process of dealing with trauma and accepting the impermanence of life, and how art has always been a way to remember those who left us (let's remember that the tale itself is 800+ years old at this point).

流行りに乗らずこうしたアニメを作ろうとする人達がいて、それを地上波で観れる喜び

11話でよくぞここまで綺麗に終えたと感激しました。

琵琶だけが老けないのは、栄枯盛衰を辿った平家一門と対比して、それを不変の物語として語り継ぐ平家物語の象徴としての役割があるからだと思ってる。 変わりゆく平家と変わらず語り継ぐ琵琶。

アニメ史に残るラストだと思う 傑作。

As a Sri Lankan Buddhist, I’ve never thought I would get to see embodiment of Buddhist teachings in an anime. This anime without a doubt is one of my underrated favourites from its visuals and it’s very minimalist ending theme.

中国人として、日本の文化に近いで故に、このシーンに含まれている深意をよくわかれる。特に仏教について、東アジアの人がみんなわかれるかと思う。とても美しいと思うし、感動しました、琵琶の演奏も素晴らしい。

結末はわかっていたけどそれでも涙が抑えきれないぐらい感動した。 音楽もアニメーションも声優さんも本当に素晴らしすぎる、、

これでまた１話から見返すと平家一門が生き返ってくる。 何百年とこの繰り返しをしてきたことに本当に圧倒される。

NHKで放送されている「鎌倉殿」と合わせて見ると、平家も源氏も互いにその時代を生きるために武士としての威信をかけて戦っていたんだろうなぁって感慨深くなる。 なんて言えば良いか分からないけど言葉で表せない美しさが秘められている。 大好きだ。

最終話。入水時の女房以外、誰の泣き顔も描写しないことがより奥深さを感じる。大原御幸でも恩讐を超えて食事を提供し、静かに微笑む徳子の強さが心にしみた。

白い彼岸花の花言葉は「また会う日を楽しみに」。そこから導かれる徳子の往生の言葉は、おそらく「また今度」。それはけっして叶わない、だけどそれゆえに、強い強い祈り、願いとなる。 あらためて第一弾PVを見返す。その結びの言葉は、「また今度」。何という構成力。震えた。。。

「祈る」ことがどれだけ大切な事なのか教えてくれたアニメ。

1:33 All Japanese read and recite this prologue of Heike Monogatari at elementary school. But not all of them know the whole story of Heike. I was one of those Japanese who recited this as a mere homework or task. But thanks to this beautiful anime, I will appreciate every single word of it whenever I recite this prologue.

劇中花が落ちるシーンが、個人個人の命の終わりを暗示してると勝手に解釈して、鳥肌立ってた

台詞、色彩、表情、演出、声、音楽、何もかもが深くて美しい

アニメーションの新たな歴史を切り開いた作品。 ここまで細部にクオリティの高い作品はなかなかお目にかかれない。 脚本、アニメーション、カット、演出、劇伴、声優、、。フルパッケージで抜かりがなく楽しめる。制作陣の気合いを随所からひしひしと感じる。 アニメに不向きな仏教、歴史モノここまで昇華させた作品は未だかつて数少ない。 ビジネス的には伸びなさそうなのが唯一の　欠点か。しかし、目先の数字ばかりを追い、売れてる漫画をただ単純に映像化することしかできないアニメ作品が殆どの中、売り上げよりも見る者の心に響くこの作品を一から創り上げたことに価値がある。正直、日本のアニメはピークを過ぎ、平家物語のような映像作品としての純度の高いは産まれにくくなっているが、この作品を見て数々の先人達が築き上げた日本のアニメーションの真髄を感じた。 これをテレビで放送することに意味がある。10年後の評価が楽しみだ。

この場面が好き過ぎて定期的に観に来てる

冗談抜きで最後のびわの語りで涙腺決壊しそうになる これは平家物語自体の魅力なのか それとも悠木碧の表現力の力なのか はたまた両方か…

1:34からのびわの声が独特な色気さがあって好き。 何年も長生きしてるかのような神々しさが感じられて良い

琵琶の音色と語りにて滅びし者共は何度でも甦る。 最後の方で竜宮城でみんなが楽しげに笑っている所で涙してしまう。 これが犬王に続き、『竜宮城はあるのだ』と語られ竜神様と共に天に召されるのだなぁ

関係ないかも知れないけど 去年の秋、休職中にふらっと訪れた奈良でたまたま興福寺の仏像公開の時期と被っていたようで、五重塔の中にある仏像を拝むことができた。人は多かったけれど、見た瞬間震えた。自然と合掌。千年に渡り様々な人の顔を見てきて、その願いを聞いてきたであろう厚みを感じた。ただただ連綿と人が続いていることの素晴らしさや、栄枯盛衰。多くをここで見てきたのだろうと思うと動けなくなった。 1時間近く見ちゃった。祈りが具現化されたみたいだった。

As was explained to me, this is an ancient Buddhist ritual in which a dying person, by holding the 5 strings held in Buddha's hands, is allowed a direct path to paradise. The butterfly is the symbol of the Heike clan so, by extension, since the butterfly is on her hand, the clan also gained passage to paradise.

琵琶の語りによって「平家物語」が誕生して再び一族に命が宿ることを、1話最初に見せた落花・開花の逆再生で表現して結ぶの芸術的すぎる

千葉さんが唯一台本通りにやる作品

It's been two months but I keep coming back to this scene. God, the part where Shigemori's voice is slowly starting to blend with Biwa....

全てにおいて愛おしい作品。時間軸が違うだけで、皆一所懸命生きて、誰かを想って、祈って、生きて。 空を沢山見ようと思いました。この時代の人達が祈った空はずっと続いていて、今の時代が終わっても、未来の人達も見上げるだろうから。

原作、ストーリーの見せ方、絵のタッチ、声優陣、すべてが本当に素晴らしい作品。

びわが徳子の髪の毛を編んで既に成就してるから、黒い糸だけ編み込まれてないって解説すごいな、、、

徳子、初登場の時は声が明るくってはつらつとしてて16歳の女の子って感じするのに、結婚して母になって、いろんな経験をしながら苦悩の先の人生の色を知って、最後は落ち着いた女性の声になってる。改めて声優さんってすごいなあと思った。

徳子さんのセリフは物語を作る人にとっての願いや祈りでもあるんだろうなぁ。このアニメの平家物語もたぶん自分の中で生き続ける。

本当に綺麗にまとめ上げたと思う。

I was translating subtitles for this anime, and I learned a lot and cried a lot. A masterpiece indeed.

心の中の汚い部分が浄化されていく

I learned Heike Monogatari as one the best Japanese literatures when I was an elementary school student. My grandpa told me that my ancestor had fought for Heike in Heian period, so the story made me think about my ancestor and interested in Japanese history. I’m glad to know that Heike Monogatari was made as animation based the the original story.

紫雲は臨終の人にとっての吉兆で、蝶（平家の家紋）がそこに吸い込まれていくことで徳子は成仏出来たんだな…ってことに泣いた。 五色の糸の黒だけを握っていないのも深い。

ハイビスカスが画面に映った時思い出した。そういやウチの田舎に平家所縁の伝承があったことを。京の都からこんな辺境まで逃れてきたんだなぁ。

それぞれが口にする祇園精舎の声。贖罪のような、これからを憂うような、今までを懐かしむような、そして、祈りのような。そんな想いが込められているように聞こえる。

This sublime scene became one of my favorite anime moments of all time and I'm glad to see that other people feel the same way. I watched a ridiculously large amount of anime this year. When I tried to review all of them inside my head and think of my favorite moments, this one immediately popped up. And after learning what the anime's director has gone through in her life, now it all makes even more sense and it hits even harder... as if it didn't hit hard enough already.

資盛の穏やかな声を聞くと泣きそうになる

2:27 ここで耐えれなかった… 1人、また1人と消えて行く平家の者たちを思い浮かべたら涙が止まらない…

同時期にやってた大河の後白河法皇と比べるとあっちは身勝手な権力者として世を掻き回してたというイメージがどうしても強く感じるけどこっちを見るとあぁやっぱり仏教を修めた人なんだなぁ…ってなる

Since I already knew the fate of the Heike from history and the anime portrays them as protagonists, throughout the whole series, I was filled with strange sensations similar to powerlessness, because despite my feelings of wanting these characters to survive and hoping something would come and save them, the only thing I could do was watch them fall to their fates. The conflict between Genji and Heike are usually told from the victor's perspectives but this anime was unique in the sense that it shed light onto the lives of Heike family members, depicting them as very humanly and likable people (even Sukemori was likable by the end), establishing an emotional connection between viewers and the protagonists. This and prior historical knowledge effectively instilled the same experience that Biwa and Shigemori had throughout their journey within the audience. We were basically watching the Heike family from the same eyes as these two. At the end, I too was saddened by everyone's fate and found myself dealing with the experience by accepting - I guess impertinence - and praying somewhere in my heart for them to find peace in the afterlife. I dunno, tearing up as I write this but gosh Kyo Ani staff are incredible. I wish the whole world would give Kyo Ani/ex-Kyo Ani more attention at least for works that can be watched by wider audiences like this or Violet Evergarden (most beautiful work of art in mankind) or Koe no Katachi (also directed by Yamada Naoko, beautiful film). My prayers still go to the victims of Kyo Ani tragedy. You will always be with us through your works. God bless.

何度見ても鳥肌が立ちます ここまで素晴らしいアニメに出会えたことに感謝です

日本の歴史がこんなに世界の人達に親しまれているのは嬉しいですね、 「平家物語」と言う一族が滅びて行く物語をこんなに綺麗に描ける製作者の方達もすごいと思いました……(´TωT｀)

As a Theravāda Buddhist from South East Asia, I love how Japanese historical epics are intertwined with Buddhism Teaching. I learned so much about Buddhism from watching this anime than just studying it from my native language.

This is one of the best endings I've ever seen through my whole anime enjoyer career! And one of the strongest as well. The whole series was a build-up for an incredible sum up on multiple existential problems and internal conflicts which many may face during critical moments in their lifes. Naoko Yamada is a true genius who crafted an incredible gem out of her own tragedy in life. May she be blessed through all her upcoming years!

This was a beautiful message. I've heard that every educated Japanese person knows the opening lines of the Heike Monogatari very well. I see the Buddhist message of the impermanence of earthly things (shogyou mujou) has close parallels in Christianity. "The dauntless shall meet their end. They shall be as mere dust before the wind." is similar to: "For dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return." (Genesis 3:19) and "The color of the flowers on its double-trunked tree Reveals the truth that to flourish is to fall." is similar to: "For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away." (1 Peter 1:24) I think if the people of the world focused more on our commonalities instead of fighting because of our differences, the world would be a much better place. I am reminded of the manga "Saint Young Men" or 聖☆おにいさん. I saw a documentary once from Japanology Plus about the historical Hidden Christians. There was a Buddhist Temple in Japan that the Catholic Church donated money to for repairs, and a Buddhist who takes care of an abandoned church. In the video, a Buddhist monk put it this way: one person will cut a wooden cylinder in half vertically, and see a rectangle. The other, horizontally, and the cross section will be a circle. Either way, you accomplished the goal of splitting the cylinder in half.

This , for me , is PERFECTION. In all of it, as an illustrator, as an script writer, I just want to arrive to that level of beauty. The music, the verses, this scene for me , summarize all I want to do as a creator.

親の仕事で海沿い各地を転校して育った。平家一門と同じく私は瀬戸内海にとても縁深い。 このアニメは間の取り方が秀逸で、日本画と同じく、空白の多い画面や無音すら、それ自体が芸術と言える。無駄なシーンが何一つ無いので、スマホも触らず毎回食い入るように視聴した。 壇之浦、宮島、藤戸、屋島、須磨浦、和田岬等々、平家物語を詳しくは知らずに訪れていた。聖地巡礼に挑戦したい。

最後に強まっていく琵琶の音は何だか晩夏の蝉の鳴き声を思わせる

this scene gives me goosebumps everytime, heike monogatari wasnt the most immersive for me but definetly one of the most memorable

琵琶は壇ノ浦の戦い時点で30代くらいらしいし白髪長髪で平家物語語ってる琵琶はアニメ補正で綺麗に描かれてるけど老婆なんだろうな

寂光院。大原御幸の舞台ですが、この語り継ぐべき物語の尊いお寺に放火するとは実に実に悲しい限りです。焼け落ちる前にお参りできてよかった。 Jakkoin. This is the setting of the Ohara Gokou, and it is truly, truly sad that the precious temple of this story that should be handed down to the next generation was set on fire. I am glad I was able to visit the temple before it burned down.

Yamada is so goated even tho this anime was not popular, it was a amazing anime, on point direction, a lot of cool interesting messages and reflexions, a very interesting story that runs in kinda of a constant skiping pace(to adapt a entire war in this many episodes it was really good) and this final was absolutely breath taking and reflexive it was amazing, thank you yamada sensei you are one of the ascending directors in japan and by far the best female anime director all time

なんと！大原御幸までが描かれているとは 11話が楽しみです

I was stunned with a great buildup and a most powerful punch in the ending. The show is incredible. It is one of the rare 10/10 meaning and art wise, which can be viewed disregarding of year and its aging. Such an incredible intrinsic view on the history, life meaning, art, nature and our legacy - the one we own to our elder generations. We would not be the ones we are as a nation, if not for those who lived before. An incredible story of poetry and self analysis throughout the blank history, but via the reach lives of real inhabitants and persons. The whirlwind of ambitions, doubts, glorious moments and weaknesses - the ones which make people people. I can't stress enough how much this show impacted me this year. And, much to my regret, how little people seem to get from it, if anything at all. "The Buddha's temple bells toll the message..." - a reminder to us all

Praying is a good way to bear suffering, but to overcome it, you need practice. Buddhism teaches to live in the world without being attached to it (the noble four truths says so), to live in the here and now, that only you can save yourself, to move beyond suffering. One of the main teaching of this story is the concept of Impermanence, that everything goes constant and inevitable change. To move beyond impermanence you must first accept it. In this pandemic I found peace, calm, tranquillity and will to live in the teachings of the Buddha, that I wish to take refuge and follow the precepts. This anime have only reinforced my resolve to follow the eightfold path for attaining freedom and to teach freedom to others, because that’s the way the Buddha did. 🙏🏻 Even if this anime is not for everyone, I will defend the goodness of his mystical experience until death.

最後の蝶がたまらない…

1000年に渡って語り継がれてきた平家物語。素晴らしいアニメになった今、次の時代へ語り継ぐのは私たちの役目だと思う。

Heike monogatari is a beautiful anime that's my favorite i cried and i laughed this work of art is a masterpiece but many people doesn't watch it it's a shame..

It surprises me that more people aren't talking about this anime.

寂光院での「大原御幸」の場面ですね、私も寂光院には、2度ほど訪れておりますが、2000年の焼失（2005年に再建）と聞いて、心が痛みました。平家一門へのお弔いの日々、「建礼門院」徳子様どうぞ御心（みこころ）安らかにと願わずにおられません。

このシーンの曲が「purple clouds」、仏が来迎する時にあらわれる「紫雲」ってタイトルなのが、ほんとうに刺さる

結末はわかっていて、でも何も出来なくて、ただただ見ることしか出来なくて、そんなびわに何ができるか、無力な人に何ができるか、、 それがただただ語ること祈ること。 800年前にあったことが今も学校で習うし、ドラマやこうしてアニメになったりするし、、人の想いと行動は800年の時をも超えることができるんだなと。。そう思うと身震いしちゃってね。 おそらくフィクションであることはわかってるけど、そう思わせるくらいの琵琶の音の重みと作品の美しさと。 この作品には敵わないって思ったし、それを表現してきたキャストとスタッフは本当に凄いなと。

This is truly the definition of a hidden gem. I wish I could meet you guys and share.

English cant translate "祇園精舎", "Gion Shouja", in Japnese. This Gion Shouja is one of the most sacrated place and has especial meaning for buddhism. At here, he started to teach his thinking. Original buddhism cocept doesnt treat Buddha like God. He is just a human. The goal is to reach enlightment by myself, which Buddha discoverd and talked. Buddha's temple. . .totaly lost in traecelation, even it was actually Buddha's temple.
