Grace member Darrell Fielder shared several timeless interviews with James Baldwin with us -- this is a clip from one of them that also features singer and activist Harry Belafonte. The clip comes from a fuller Hollywood Roundtable segment linked below from August 1963, discussing the March on Washington where MLK, Jr., gave his "I have a dream" speech.
The video includes questions to consider as you watch that will help you apply Belafonte's and Baldwin's comments to our own time:
- Are there still white Americans who refuse to pay attention, or who say that protestors are going too far? How do we invite them into the struggle?
- Who are the “profiteers” and “vested interests” of our day, who control how things turn out? How can we sway them to side with justice?
- Baldwin sees an awakening in his United States - that the country must now “go to work” because it can no longer ignore the injustices taking place. Why does it seem that we fell asleep again - so that we need to awake yet again, here in 2020?
- Do you see a white obsession with non-violence play out today? How does it derail and detract from the protests happening right now?
