HERE YOU WILL SEE MY *PRE-ARRIVAL VIDEO* OF THE FDNY OPERATING FOR A RECYCLING TRUCK FIRE ON WEST 41ST STREET IN THE HELL’S KITCHEN AREA OF MANHATTAN IN NEW YORK CITY.
I once drove around the corner to see a truck dumping in the park and I quickly realized what was happening. It didn’t take long to be a full fire once it was out.
@@robertsumner9657 Got to remember this is the usa....Probably scared he would get sued or a hefty ticket for dumping trash in the street....guarantee some sharp shooter lawyer would make a case out of it if they could.
Safety first right? If they didn’t have enough sparks to ignite something, they definitely did now. And lots more oxygen for the fire, after they cut a hole.
B4 i became a Firefighter i work for waste management in Phoenix AZ we was train to when you first see smoke dump out as soon as possible even if you are on the Interstate. Pull over and dump it quickly
I don't get why the trucks are equiped with a fire suppression system that strays foam inside the truck. I'm the fire is contained inside the truck kick the air off this putting out the fire.
As mentioned by other readers the load should have been dumped. The problem here is the driver waited too long to dump. With all the garbage truck fires I ever fought the best results were with a dumped load. You can see the issue is hydraulic since as the hopper section started to rise it goes up a little and then falls as the system fails After members cut in they still could not pull anything out because a modern garbage truck can pack 1000 lbs. or more into one cubic yard of space. This truck normally dumps with an front mounted ejector plate that pushes the load out the back. The driver attempted to push the load out of the hole the members cut but the truck could not build pressure due to failed hydraulics. Fortunately this truck is repairable. A new truck like this is a 300 to 400 k investment. So if any garbage route drivers are watching dump as quickly as you can once you determine there’s a fire in the body. I have seen these go until the entire truck is destroyed.
The problem I see was they opened the rear of the truck a full two minutes before the lines were even charged with water. This allowed air in and the fire to breath, then it burnt through a hydraulic line. If they had waited till the water was good to go this most likely would never have happened.
The training the driver should have had teaches them the procedure is pack it... pack it... pack it... Get to the closest clear area then immediately eject the load call for fire department while packing the load. The packing reduces the air in the load causing it to smolder instead of burn allowing more time to get to a safe spot to eject and upon starting ejecting eject as fast as the truck can and get the truck clear.
You are such a wonderful man to bring us all these events! I have never seen anything like this before and I am grateful. It’s such a pretty truck....Be careful in this heat, John. ❤️
As a 1st responder EMS in NY. It’s soooo annoying when you “buffs” get in our way of the actual emergency. You’re probably the only one that actually displays common sense and gets out of the way, so that we can get to work. I thank you for that. Nice clip.
As a fire fighter I can say thank you to the people who try to help and point to where the fire is however it’s not necessary 99.9% of the time we no exactly where we’re going especially when smoke is seen miles away
Good video. FDNY knows their stuff. Dispatch redirects units to a different response as acting when the normal units are busy on other calls. Sure enough in the case of this fire, the acting units had to respond.
They should have just called a heavy wrecker to lift the back up so they could access it. What I think happened, was when they started to open it, the hydraulic hose melted from the heat of the fire.
Long time ago I worked on that type of truck in a shop. The hydraulic lines on the side were probably destroyed with the fire shooting out. Which prevented lifting the rear.
@@truckspotting7473 they’re not gonna scrap the whole truck. All that may need to be fixed is some electrical and maybe hydraulic lines and cylinders. The holes they cut can just be welded back into place
@@thomassimmons7127 LOL, OMGosh, I'm busting a gut. Yea, ya ever see that TV commercial, where the woman is letting her dogs or cats in late at night? But its raccoons, and shes talking about them snuggling with mama. I can't remember if its a eyeglasses co, or insurance comercial. Either way, ask JJ about hits rats video, and him letting them in, because hes not wearing glasses. No, Maji's video wasn't exactly like that, but it sure the hell was funny!..... i think when i asked him the question, i must have seen some really skinny rats, and i figured, once tourisms back, maybe they'll fatten a few up!?🤭🤣🤔👀🤫🚒🚔🚑 Must be a 10:75 happening with my emoji's.
Our garbage haulers dump first then call the F.D., makes a mess but saves the truck. Last incident was a Waste Management truck, one huge mess but the WM crew did an awesome job on the clean up.
@@treypz you'd be surprised there is a proper technique to get you to a safe spot to dump the load starting with packing the load multiple times this causes the fire to smolder instead of burning by reducing oxygen content in the compactor then get to a safe unloading spot and as fast as you can offload the truck and move the truck away
Maji, the same thing just happened in MN. But that was a semi truck of scrap metal, burning. I said dump the load out. First fire truck pulled up, fire kept burning, second truck, they get a line over a fence, and eventually the driver and the FD figured out, dump it. But the video shows a State trooper hurrying to get in his car, and somehow, someway, some goes around the sign truck and another vehicle blocking the road. You would think, nobody could, it'd be impossible, but how in the H_ll do people not see all the cars stopped, the vehicles with flashing lights, a sign truck, and yet, someone always gets around them? The S.P. said you may want to get behind them before he starts writing tckets and confiscates the mans DL.
Great Catch, not fire related but that dodge with the goose neck towing 3 cars, is that common over there?, im in New Zealand, and i have to say it looks impressive along with your Fire engines, keep safe everyone and keep smiling
WELL, WHEN A LOCAL COMPANY IS AT A FIRE OR OTHER SCENE THEY GET ANOTHER COMPANY TO COME IN AND FILL IN FOR THEM. IN THIS CASE THERE WAS A FIRE DOWN THE STREET WHERE THE LOCAL COMPANIES WERE AT AND SO THESE 2 WERE COVERING FOR THEM AT THE TIME THIS FIRE CAME IN.....HOPE THAT HELPS YOU UNDERSTAND IT A BIT BETTER.....THANKS SO MUCH TOM.....
They’re holding hooks and Pikes, this is so that they can drag any debris out the way or break a roof with a pike, they do other things with the tools. They don’t carry them for no reason aha 😆
The drivers are trained if the load catches fire the are to ram it all the way to the back to pack it tight to choke the fire and go to the dump. The dumps have an area to push the load out on so it can be spread out so it can be extinguished. They need a heavy tow truck to lift the back up so they can pull the recycling out
It would have been better to call the fleet wrecker to the scene to lift the tail gate with the boom of the wrecker. Could have saved the garbage company a few penny's rather then cutting the side of the box open. the fire was pretty much out so a few minutes of waiting would have been ok. great video as always
I have the utmost respect for firefighters be they full time paid or part time volunteers and rarely critizise what they do but I can't help thinking that this was a very expensive cock up from start to finish. The hydraulics were probably burnt out by the flames on them while the back was open all that time while they got the water sorted. Surely with so little sign of fire apart from the wisp of smoke after they had got the water on the fire and the back had closed back up they could have got the rubbish truck to somewhere more open and brought in a big digger or shovel or forklift and lifted the back up as I've seen fire departments do in other videos on RU-vid and empty it that way. That would have surely been a much cheaper alternative to cutting the whole thing open in the sides. I noticed, unusually for FDNY, there were no senior officers in attendance. Maybe if there had been the whole episode would have been dealt with differently. And I am in England and our firefighters do things differently to your guys as well!
What are people putting in there trash because tbw idk how a truck like that happens and I seen weird things like this there was actually back in 2014 when a biggest black smoke aka a large fire just happened a front of my face me wondering what are people even doing to there life or risking other people to danger and what a great video you just shared and giving example what people shouldn’t be doing to cause a fire
What's with acting companies? Like what do they do? don't know much about FDNY or any FD really. Do they take place of an out of service house or was that house just busy?

What the hell is this, Explorer Day? #1 don't EVER fucking open them without water already on/under them. #2 If you have to cut for access because they won't open, cut down in from the top, you don't need a door, just slots. #3 if you're wanting to access all of the fire, get close to the hole in the side and aim up so that the blast hitting the top inside sprays it all around. Two fails and an ignorance. Same rules as with structure, hit the ceiling.
Can't help but feel not moving the garbage truck at beginning to middle of the road would been a smart idea, gives them plenty of access both sides of the truck on fire, shame they tried to open the trucks back more aswell as this obviously made things worse and forced them to cut the sides.
@@THEMAJESTIRIUM1 I just feel the cutting was all non necsersary cause I think if they just pumped more water into the opening they had, it would probably been drowned out. would they do any investigations into what caused the fire and how they tackled the fire? Would be a intresting read on this incident expecially if there was a section titled what we can do better section
Wonder if it will take an steamy dump ? There was another video on here called Trash Truck Takes an Steamy Dump and it showed the trash truck dumping it's burning load on an neighborhood street. =^.^=
