Pre Germinating your grass seed requires more work than simply putting the seed in a spreader and putting it in your lawn. BUT, if you are looking to skip the first couple days of dragging sprinklers around, you may way to give this a try.
The schedule I used for this was:
24 hr in water, 12 hour out of water and repeated this x3.
These were the recommendations from Mountain View Seed. Other folks have left the seed submerged for 12hrs, changed the water, then let it submerged for another 12hr and repeat for a few days. The duration really depends what type of grass seed you are pre germinating and how long you want to wait to actually sew it.

I use a wheel barrel to germinate and just toss it on by hand then rake and water. That dinky spreader is cute. lol

Man one video 12 hrs then change water but constantly in water. Others 24 in 12 out then 12 in 12 out. Never saw any with lid wether that maters or not. But I did see do not dump water on lawn or on something that you wouldn’t want to kill. Water high acid.

Yeah, many different ways to do it. After doing a couple times.. it’s honestly easier to get a good set up with timers and sprinklers, seed and keep the seed moist that way. See my other videos on easy above ground irrigation set ups for seeding or year round.

Not only I pregerminate grass seeds but I germinate them. I punch 5-6 1 inch holes in plastic buckets and I mix soil with seeds (not a so big amount). I soak and mix it all and wait until it begins to sprout. No foul smell. Don't wait for too long otherwise the mix will be harder to spread. When germination has started I go to the places I want to overseed and I add water to get a fine mud. I shake the bucket so the mud gets through the holes and distributes. If the weather is rainy when you distribute the seeds, it's even better. I repeat this process from spring to frosts and it works well. And I use minimal amounts of seeds. Almost no loss. Few or no watering because the seeds quickly root. Ideal too if someone has a taste for wildflower patches. But with fewer seeds.

Well milorganite has a ratio of what to mix. I think for perennial rye, its 4:1. So you gonna use 5 lbs of seed, then you mixing it with 20 lbs of milorganite.

Agreed. I used the ratio when seeding my lawn and had no issue. It was easy to spread, even with the wet seed, and the lawn jumped up quick. Honestly, I'm not sure I would do it any other way. Because Milorganite has such a low salt index, you can use a crazy amount of it with risk to your lawn. Works a treat.

I hang dry my seed bags for a few hours before mixing them in. I do use Milo as it has a pretty high rate anyway only being 6% nitrogen.

Next time, spread out the seed somewhere in a shady spot and let it dry for an hour or so. It'll be much easier to broadcast.

I think the Tenacity/PGR should have gone down a day prior if you pre-germinated the seeds. Also i think it would have been better to split the hydrotain vertically. You are using it on the low end of the slope. Thats likely to be more successful anyway due to run off.

Why they are changing the water user for Pre germinating? Usually seeds have some growth factors in it and best solution is to keep them in original water.

They water gets real stank and gross which can negatively affect the seed.

Perfect, pre germination is definitely a faster way to go ; several ways to go. I use 2 buckets , top one to hold seed has holes in bottom, bottom to hold water. Lift top bucket , water drains out. Hot water seems to be a bigger “boost” to the seeds

Pre-Germination duration varies not only by type but also brand. The high end kbg I used took 14 days. The TTTF took 9 days. That's changing the water every 12 hours per the Milorganite write up. I'm currently running a test using warm water to see if that changes the duration. I also used Milorganite as the spreading medium. To dry the seed I spread it out on a tarp and left it about 30 minutes. I did find hand spreading was quick and the best for my application of about 800sf.

@kkevinj1 .. early next week I'll be hand spreading about 4ksf...milorganite/seed mix. I've done it b4 and it goes well once you fine tune your technique . A few other notes about drying the seed...if you have a cotton sheet that absorbs the water ,it'll dry faster. Don't be surprised if it takes longer than 30 minutes

@@kkevinj1 I can attest that Milorganite is a fantastic carrier for seed. Even if it’s not dried all the way. I did it on another seed job this spring and used a broadcast spreader.

Quick note: If you have clay soil, that garden weasel isn't going to cut it. You need to take a tiller or pick axe (using the wider end of the axe) to break up at least 4", then mix in top soil with it. I just completed that phase of it, hand-screening what I broke up by shoveling it into a wagon, hand filtering to get out big chunks that won't break up, removing most of the rocks and little roots, then mixing in some topsoil I bought. I've got at least 4" now of a nice mix of the old clay (which has a lot of nutrients) and the top soil (the top soil I bought is a mix of top soil, sand and nutrients. It's a very find mix. Should work well).

Thoughts on doing a “pre pregermination” or “lag pregermination”. I am doing the same as you with my perennial rye. However, 3 days prior I took a handfull of seed and put it in a coffee filter and did the pregerm process on a micro scale. That way I have the exact day the seed will start to germinate. Once I see it in the small coffee filter, I know in 2-3 days the large buckets will be ready to spread.

Hey what ever works for you! When looking into this method there are so many ways to do it. PRG already germinates quick so doing pre germ with it, you can fill in spots in no time!

I am on day 7 of pre-germating my Black Beauty Ultra Seed.. still no sprouts... i must of downed the seed.. ugh.

spreading is easier when you take the seed out of the bag and spread it on some plastic to dry in the sun for a few hours

No need to have the seeds sprout. I seeded the seeds after having them in water for 8 days. They did not sprouts. So I put them on the ground. Three days later I saw baby grass. So the lesson was that all you need to do was to soak your seeds in the water for 24 hours. Then after keep it outside and water it for two days. Then, plant the seeds.

A big benefit to pre - germinating in buckets is saving $$$ on water and time. You didn't have to turn on your sprinklers for 8 days and that's a win. Pre-germinating gets water to the center of the seeds so that they sprout. 8 days I am sure got water to the center for germination to begin. Nice work!

Yeah can, but you can do it less days than KBG bc TTTF and PRG germinate so much quicker than KBG

That soil was not a bit compacted…. That was cured concrete! Tine tiller pushed cross soil tin-king sound like on cement! Impressed - thanks for the vid. Note: Connor Ward said his was not spreadible really either. Looking forward to the hydrotain test tesults. Nice lawn - your lawn is going to be amazing.

I wanted to experiment and try priming/pre germination. I soaked a PRG/KBG mix for 4 days. I never saw any germination but decided to spread the seed down anyway and top dress with soil. It's been two days and still no life visible. I'm worried I soaked the PRG too long? Maybe the water wasn't warm enough? I'll keep watering in the meantime.
