I'm new to sewing and found your video very educational. I'm impressed that you took the time to run through the different fabrics with examples highlighting the importance of pre wash. I absolutely get it now. Your tip on how to check for shrinkage brilliant. Thank you

Didn’t know I should be basting before washing my fabric. Great tip! And steaming?! Who knew?!

Haha, yah, who knew you had to go to thw sewing machine before actually starting a project. I have had many of these oops-forgot-to-bast moments in the washing machine. And steaming wool is a must if you are not planning on washing - I have had pieces shrink up to 1/4" under the iron (uugh). But glad I had these moments so others can learn from my mistakes. Thanks for watching!

Loved your video, so much so that I've subscribed, so you're my first subscription. Your video was fun to watch and you're so knowledgeable. I'm guilty of not pre-washing my fabrics, but after your 4-whys, my buckets of fabric are heading straight for the washer. I'm a sucker for remnants, so I buy what appeals to me. Also, because of my fabric fetish, I don't have an easy 10"x10" square to cut, baste and wash to test. I'm at a loss...what should I do? Do you also have a video on how to identify the type of the fabric?

Thank you so much for your comment! Glad to hear the video gave you some good reasons why pre-washing is important. And yes, we are qorking on an extensive video for fabric identification as well as a book for all those people that need to feel fabrics in order to learn. And I guess I may have to do a video on how to do a burn test for unknown fabrics!? 😉 Thanks for watching and subscribing!

The video was great, wowww and ur presentation was fantastic. I just like to know that for washing what are the other things to add.whether need to add any detergents, vinegar etc along with cold water or just the cold water is enough for checking the shrinkage of the fabric And for how long we need to keep it in the water. I think you missed to tell these things.

Thank you so much for watching and asking a very good question. I had done some research on how to wash properly, prevent crocking or bleeding of the dyes (by adding vingear, salt, etc.), but it was getting more confusing (and loooong) so I figured I would do a follow up video on this topic. But, to answer your question what I do for almost all of my fabric is: use a bit of delicate detergent and wash in cold - general rule of thumb is wash the fabric like you would wash the final garment. Thanks again for your comment - I will be sure to do a follow up video on this one!

We’re making a bed throw out of patterned polyester which involves two seams. Is it best to match the patterns and sew just the seams before pre washing and cutting to size?
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 2 года назад
Good question! Its always good to prewash everything (sometimes even your trims need to be prewashed - if they are cotton or have any shrinkable content?) Sewing the seams before prewashing may pucker the seams that you just stitched - it is only if you know for sure it is in fact your fabric is 100% polyester you may be safe without pre washing because polyester shrinks less than 1%. On the other hand, if you are unsure of the exact contwnt it might bw safer to baste your cut edges and throw in the wash before starting your project. Best of luck!! Thanks for watching 🙏

Do you need to prewash muslin
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 3 года назад
This ultimately depends on if you will bw using your muslin afterwards - I like to sew my muslins up in fabric that is very close to the actual fabrication I want to use for the final garment, I try to find off-cut fabric or overstock fabrics that are inexpensive but still wearable so my muslin can be wearable too! So deoe ding on what you want your muslin for afterwards you can prewash, or not! Its really up to you... (sorry for the delayed reply, hope this helped!?!). Happy sewing 🌞

What about satin fabric?
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 3 года назад
What is the fibre content of this satin (because "satin" is very general... you can have silk satin, polyester satin, tencel satin - etc.)?
@KA-vr4uu

How about fleece ?
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 2 года назад
What content is your fleece? Usually it is 100% polyester and therefore normal washing would be just fine. Thanks for your question...and thanks for watching ♥️

I don't get it. First you say that we're supposed to pre-wash the fabric, but then you wash just a 10x10 square? What about the rest???
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru
@LTRLTrendFashnGuru 3 года назад
Ok, nonproblem. Lemme recap, the 10x10 sq is to test how your fabric will react in the wash... if it bleeds (for example, if you have a white on red striped or printed fabric), or if your fabric shrinks ALOT (as I showed in the vid, I had a silk that pleated up and hence would not washed ALL my yardage). After washing your square you would have a better idea as how your fabric reacts to the wash cycle BEFORE you stick your whole yardage in. But if you want to just throw caution to the wind, go for it... wash your yardage without this test - no problem! However, I highly suggest basting your cut edges before you wash the yardage so as to not have to deal with very frayed/tangled edges (which can get caught in the washing machine). Hope this was a helpful explanation? Thanks for watching!!

Hi Frank, We always appreciate suggestions and we are definitely getting to a video on how to thread and use a domestic sewing machine. However, our plans to make a pride flag do not fit into our scheduling at this time. We have many plans for the channel, but this tutorial just disnt make the cut - since there was very little celebrations happening for pride we didn't feel this was a good time. Thanks again for your continued support!
