i have been saying for years kemper needed to sell a cheap small unit that just loads profiles. nobody really needs the capture capability when good studio engineers like Brit and Michael here can do better captures
Most stock profiles sound somewhat "dry and honky mids". Awful. Some people sell good quality profiles, but then you again just pay, pay, pay endlessly.
I did a gig with the free CAE3+ capture and your IR with my tonex pedal paired with the HXFX. At sound check the sound guy just threw his hands in the air and exclaimed “it’s perfect, I don’t need to do anything”. Needless to say I bought the 2U preamp pack. Now using a mix of the CAE and X88 captures. Thank you Michael!!!
This is very much appreciated Michael...I will definitely be picking this up! My JMP-1 is in storage on the other side of the planet and I have really been missing it. I've been using your Superlead 71 pack for Tonex as well as your Alien Green Two Notes cab which are both excellent. I chose the JMP-1 over the ADA MP1 back in the '90s...but now maybe I'll pick up your pack for that one as well. Thanks again!
What a generous thing to do, Michael! You just might have made a sale for IK. I’ve been building my own lightweight rack system using Rocktron interface with tc D2 and M2000 units, and find myself at a bit of an impasse to replace preamps - selling a brand new Neuron & a vintage MXR Dist+. Thanks to your great reviews, I’m close to pulling the trigger on this amazing little IK box. I use a JMP1 and ADA1 like you but they are too heavy to cart around; studio duty from now on. I’ll get back to that lightweight rack system another day as well. I’m ready for super compact. Thank you for your info and again, your very generous time.
Oh the great thing about this is that I can now use tonex with my Hx stomp xl with the power amp IR in the Hx stomp and place the reverb and mods , delays between the preamp and the power amp where I would traditionally put them. Thanks Michael!
Just bought the JMP-1. Tonex is 4000 miles away right now but once I get back from my vacation I gotta hit the ground running gig wise so I’m looking forward to using it. Play in a zz top tribute band so gonna pair it with an eminence Governor IR to try and replicate Billy’s live rig as much as possible. Excited to try it out, will report back!
Michael, I don’t have a Tone X currently but I’m now going to buy one after listening to this, I’m a helix user but I have to say everything you review or demo sounds awesome
This is great! It's good to see the people whose sounds I admire making captures or profiles or whatever we call them now. I bought from your DynIRs for my Two Notes stuff so I assume your captures are equally tasteful. I have an old Engl E850 rackmounted amp that has a great preamp as well as a great power amp section with nice saturation when cranked. Together with my JMP-1 there are so many great sounds that I want to capture. I am not sure if the Tone X is the way to go just to have the hardware or if I should do it in Neural Amp Modeler to combine power amp captures and preamp captures. We'll see, but it's good to see the capture technology now reaching everyone playing guitar.
MN, i use a SEA BLUE EQ ( 4 knob version) at end of chain in my worship rig ( small room lol) Itsa Katana 50Mk2 After dwnldg McRocklins CLEAN, adding the Sea Blue its pretty AWSM, and a GRT CLEAN boost w/EQ! A Warm Drive into TC Dk matter into a TS-10 ( all stacked n various settings) give me an incredible rig THAT said i AM going to get a Tonex dwnload your stuff, TJs 68 plexi, and a SLO patch from Almagram, as well as a ToneKing Imperial ...gonna be tuff setting (6) presets! :) Thank you for doing this i APPRECIATE IT! OH BTW Can ya get yer hands on a GT Trio preamp? Had (2) Ran a TS-9 on Channel (2) its an amazing preamp too! The MIX function on clean n channel 3 was unreal!
Great, now I have to buy a ToneX :). That was an interesting point about adjusting the gain outside of the captured level, because that is something I have said about the Kemper, but was told I was wrong. Since I am a bit of a noob when it comes to capture I assumed I was wrong, but I really don't think I am. Anyway, great stuff. I think I will order one and check out your preamps as I did with the Kemper.
Sweet! I'm totally in the preamp zone these days, but draggin all that to a rehearsal... auch. Very curious to hear if the tonex can completely capture the dynamics of a jcm800 2203. When I take that '83 amp to rehearsal, I'm instantly inspired. Preamp at 8-9, just with my right hand, I can go from clean to friggin kerrraang. and that thing breathes... man. Put and ocd in front and... well yeah. Yet have to get that out of a profiler or modeller. When I tried that in my former helix, it was nowhere close. Tell me Michael, how does the tonex handle that? thx!
Interesting. Why do all of these sound like the same preamp? Is that because its a snippet. I have many of these pres, (except for the Fish) and they sound markedly different and respond to the guitar level too. These (in this vid at least) sound almost the same with just a level variation. Strange
@Michael Nielsen Hey, Mr. Michael! Huge fan of how you do what you do, if ya know what'm sayin'. :) Say... I was never able to afford to get into the Kemper but am fully on board with the Tonex and all I can do with it. I know it's arduous labor (read: time consuming) but is there any chance of continuing on through your previous endeavours teaming up with Mr. Dave for the Official Friedman profile packs, Mr. Henning, etc? After running through your Carsten Grace profiles?... I'm all in for the entire collection. MAN, this is fun! Thank you, kind sir. :)
Hi Michael love These😊 thanks for all your work. I only use the Tonex Software. Can i go out of my Apollo Interface and into my Amp through the effects send so i have the Tonex preamp into my Amp poweramp😊? Cheers.
HI! You can, but getting the levels correct can be a little tricky. Also, you'll probably need a dedicated reamp output (I'm not sure if your Apollo has that). Radial makes a good one, if you need to buy one.
Hi mate, great video! Is there any disadvantage of using Space Designer as IR loader? DId you ever try to capture the power amp sections of your amps. I did and I am absolutely blown away by the results!
Hey Michael! I love your videos and the products you put out there. Really High Quality stuff so thank you very much! I have one question tho, I bought your Trixy rig for Overloud but I notice there are no DI captures. Are there any DI’s in the Trixy collection for Tonex? Thanks
Hi! Thanks! The THU captures are really about recreating album tones, so there aren’t many (or any) di captures. My TONEX captures are ALL DI captures straight from the preamp. So you can run the Tonex pedal straight in a power amp and recreate the classic preamps live, or add my IR and use them to record direct.
Thank you for your quick reply. Last question, I downloaded your free IRs and noticed there are 2 in the zip file: “Preamp-IR” and “Preamp-IR-ALT” (the latest being way bigger file size than the first one) can you please explain the differences between the 2 captures? Thanks!
I'd still prefer the Kraken to that 3-channels buggy sandbox that they sell without the wireless remote, I guess we could easily turn those cheaper TV decoders we had from China into that same many presets...
Hey michael, i just bought your single rack tonex pack. Its awesome! Are all of the captures thats in the individual preamp packs , in the big pack? Or are there more captures of each preamp in their individual pack? Hope that made sense lol
Hi. Thanks!!! If you bought them on the Tonex tone.net site, then yes. There are updates, if you send me an email through the bighairyprofiles site, i'll get them to you
Hi I was wondering whether using these Tonex preamps and going two notes genome and pulling up a power amp and then your dyn ir signature cab, whether that also could be a good option? Cheers😊
Hey Michael, I've bought a couple of your TONEX packs and they're really great. I definitely recommend them. I think I emailed you several months ago but didn't get a response. Not a big deal and I don't even recall what the question was - just wanted to let ya know in case it's not working right.
It IS a cheaper (way cheaper) option, and if you're not planning on running into a power amp, or gigging, then the software is probably the best route.
Michael, Which present pack is the epitome of Dann Huff tone, for ToneX pedal?? Thanks for all the vids!! Excellent Could you give us some info on how to set up the delay And the reverbs / chorus .. for these awesome Huff-y tones??
These sound great! Any plans for the preamps to be available on Kemper, Michael? Particularly DI profiles… I have checked your BHP site a few times and haven’t noticed any DI profile packs… unless I missed them.
Kemper is MUCH better at capturing amp sounds that are through a cab. A lot of the direct preamp tones don’t come across the way I’d like, so, I’ll consider it, but hopefully Kemper will update their capturing process to better handle that stuff.
Your guitar look and sounds fantastic (mainly thanks to your magical fingers🎉) ! I don’t know this brand and can not read it in your video. What brand is it ? Do you have a link to a shop so I can see it in every angle? Thanks again for your videos !
thank you ! I'm in love with your guitar, and you make it sound damn good ! @@BigHairyGuitars 🤟🖤 Is it a custom made following your specs ? I see some Seymour like HH and Floyd lookalike vibrato.
I like these sounds *a lot* , but I don't have a TONEX. I do however own the Overloud TH-U plugin. Could I get sounds similar to these if I got some of the tone-capture packs you made for TH-U or are these tone-captures completely different?
Thanks, it’s was just a single reverb. I think it’s Shimmer reverb, and didn’t really tweak the sound, just turned it up and made it longer. It does sound really good!
Hi Master! I have the TONEX MAX sw (and some of your sooo good profiles) but not the TONEX pedal (not yet, but 2 TONEX plus 2 TONEX ONE are in my sight line for a full stereo amp rig plus the 2 separate drivers pedals). Ok... that said... do you think that i can start - for now - with the software loading 2 instances of Tonex, one with one of your preamp profile and one with the power amp/cab IR... or can i do everything with just one instance?
Hi! I think you can run one instance. That’s what I do. Sometimes I don’t use the power amp cab IR. I’ll try a few to see which is working best. But just one instance works great
@@BigHairyGuitars Yep yep i figured it out... sorry... was a stoopid question! Now i have the full Part 1 and Part 2 of your preamp collection (ya know how much i love your work Man!) and your free IR. And about the power amp section... these days is an item that is gainig more and more interest... just because the preamp modeling/profililing tachnology is so fine. Think hardware like the CAB M+ (i have 2 of them... because of YOU!). So... i think that a pair of so good and experienced ears like yours can produce a good and more large library of combos of power amps and cabs IRS (standalone power amps like Fryette, VHT, Mesa, Marshall etc... AND power amp sections of amp heads) . Just put a good price.. and take my money Man! 😁
What is the latency like vs fractal/kemper devices? If I play a real amp I can barely tell the latency of my Axe 3, but it’s there and I get used to it quickly.
When you run into a power amp, or FX return, turn off your Cabinet IR. Unless you are using a full range monitor, like a PA system. But if it’s going into a guitar cab, turn off the IR 👍
HI, It's really depends. I keep it at 0db, but generally speaker the Tonex get's 85% of the gain correct. So, just adjust as needed. Tonex does do a good job of staying true to the original source when you change the gain and eq knobs.
Why does nobody realize that the parameter knob before the gain is a volume also, everybody keep turning up the Master volume… it is way better to balance all your captures at unity volume and then the master volume can stay a master volume
Nobody realizes it because like most IK interfaces, they're not very straightforward. That's a great tip. You could have said it nicer, but still a great tip! Thanks! 🤣👍
No worries shay. I was just playing. I was actually impressed that you're probably the only person to have read the manual. That's incredibly helpful to have the extra level control. I don't know why they didn't label that control on the face of the unit. Thanks for the tip!!!
@@BigHairyGuitars It reminded me of Waves of Love. Tamas had a great (at least for me) instrumental record out in 1992. The time of Giant, Vinnie Moore, Satriani. Even had some airtime here in the Netherlands. He even did like a double interview with Eddie Van Halen at that time If I recall correctly. Anyways….always good to check him out.
i bought one of these tonex hoping I could plug into my powerstation, so I could play these on a real cab. Sounds like pure garbage and i cannot figure out why.
@@Sticky_Tea i just go into the main setting and turn cab to off right? - but weirdly half of the presets sound better with it on. I am playing it through my bogner 2x12
The are two problems I see with this thing.... 1. A capture of anything is going to be a snapshot of the thing with certain limited settings which won't allow you to deviate from that setting..... 2. There are no effects in the TONEX. IK could've made this an Axe FX killer by adding effects to it but they halfassed it.
True-ish. 1. There is definitely room to grow, but to be honest, I rarely change the settings on my 'real' amps at home. Once I found the sweet spot, done. Like a BF Fender (volume 3 or 7, bass 11:, treble 1:30). So it's easy to make 2 captures for those sweet spots. 2. There is a pretty decent reverb, compressor, EQ and noise gate in the TONEX. Not terrible. IK sells chorus, reverb and delay pedals... so I'm sure they didn't want to step on those sales. I could see them making a $1200 do everything box in the future. I think price point was the king. $400 will sell MANY more than another $1500 modeler box.
Did you do your triaxis yet? I dont have a capture device but have triaxis and Tonex pedal. It would be kool to run a Tonex Pedal, with triaxis capture into the left side of a 2:90 and triaxis into the right side.
