This is the first draft of a new animation that illustrates plate motions from 500 Ma (late Cambrian) back to 1.5 billion years (1500 Ma). The motion of the plates is based on paleomagnetic, geologic and tectonic information. The paleomagnetic data was compiled and edited by Reece Elling from the Paleomagia database of paleomagnetic data.
I will be presenting this animation, complete with active plate boundaries, at a meeting in London this Fall.
Robinson Projection, centered at 60W. The final version will have time moving in the right direction.
Highlights:
1500 - 1300 Ma - Continents loiter about
1200 Ma - Collision of Grenvillia (Laurentia & Mawson cratons), Dharayner (Dharwar & Rayner blocks), with continent "X" (unnamed) to form Precambrian Pangea "Terra Borealis"
(the Great Northern Continent).
1150 Ma - collision of Amazonia with Grenvillia
1150 Ma - Siberia-Baltica and Congo - Kalahari breakaway leaving proto-Rodinia behind.
1000 - 900 Ma Siberia, then Baltica collide with Laurentia.
800 Ma - Kalhari block collides with Rodinia; Hijaz arcs collide with Arabia-Aravali blocks.
750 Ma - Collision of Congo craton triggers breakup of Rodinia (into northern and southern halves).
600 Ma - Northern Rodina and Southern Rodinia collide with the Congo craton (Pan African Event) forming "Pannotia" or "great" Gondwana.
580 Ma - "greater" Gondwana breaks apart forming early Paleozoic oceans.

This is the best of the all. I love it. Thanks Chris

Maybe you could also upload these in reverse. Even with the cool labeling that corresponds to which each piece is, it is still kind of hard to know which pieces you are tracking with your eyes, until they assume a familiar orientation and proximity near the end.

How ironic when i was small i mis identified Kamchatka as Malaysia. Now i see it was at Kamchatka during the precambrian 😅

Can you do your version of Algol's plate tectonics from 4.600 mya to the future? Can be done as photorrealistic as possible?

Did you find the information on the mid continental rift being partially successful? I still don't see how Amazonia could have gotten out of the way fast enough for the Grenville province to merge with Laurentia. Also, can I use some screenshots of this video? I will credit you of course.

I will be adding the MCR in the next version. My interpretation is that the MCR is an intra-continental extensional event caused by the collision of Amazonia with Laurentia (1150 - 1080 Ma) - much like the West Siberian Traps that were erupted as a result of the consolidation of Siberia, Kazakhstan & Euramerica during the formation of Pangea in the late Permian.

This theory is different compared to others. It used different ‘educated guesses’ compared to the other animations’ ‘educated guesses’. Both theories are good contenders for the pre-Cambrian period. However, this reconstruction does not assume the existence of Columbia.
