The introduction of a 3D shredder and 3D printer filament maker by Precious Plastic are tools that have the potential to revolutionize and revitalize the plastic waste industry in my opinion. Although the initial cost to build and the knowledge to construct may seem discouraging, I think, if a person has the monetary and mechanical potential, then the build will be most rewarding. As 3D printing grows in its use, so too will the need for its material... plastic filament. As the demand and consumption for plastic waste continues to decrease in China, formerly the largest user of American plastic waste, the US finds itself in a predicament with what to do with plastic scraps that must now, in turn, be sold to China. Yet, plastic waste material need no longer be a an expense to the US waste industry that ends up in landfills that have met their waste capacity. As a new tool, the 3D printer filament maker, may revolutionize the way Americans and other nations view plastic. The 3D Printing hobbyist and the like may view this a cash crop “harvest” waiting to be converted into a resource to meet the demand of maker 3D printing. Now one person's plastic waste can become another's precious resource. Plastic can now be turned into a material used in the 3D “printing” process making the recycling of plastics possible and accessible for the avid hobbyist to produce free filament for 3D Printing. In turn, production costs may be rapidly decreased for the hobbyist with such a material “free for the picking” out of the trash and into the workspace.

Thanks for your videos. You've inspired me to start collecting parts for my first extruder build! I am anxious to try making Polypropylene ("PP") filament, as you are doing in this video. I have, however, heard that PP can be troublesome to 3D print. So, I have a couple of questions: 1. Any suggestions for printing PP filament on a 3D printer (for example: extrusion & bed temps, print bed surface, etc.)? 2. Are any additives (like glass fibers) necessary to make the PP filament printable? Thanks again for all you efforts!

Filament is one product that can be sold, but the way it is right now it would not be of consistent width. And apparently this is important for 3D printing. Rather then selling filament, I would sell pelets (bits of cut filament, not sure I got the word right) to other companies that know how to make products from recycled plastic. Sorting the plastic would be the most important task to be able to resell it. In my town we have one recycle center that pays about 1 eurocent / plasic bottle, and homeless people bring hundreds of bottles.

@paulreader1777
@paulreader1777 6 лет назад
If you look elsewhere you will find that HDPE tends to shrink too much to make reliable 3D printing filament. You could certainly extrude it with this setup and the appropriate settings. The problem seems to come when printing where the layers do tend not to bond consistently. It's a pity because HDPE is the most readily available to the home hobbyist.
@jhsevs
@jhsevs 5 лет назад
I think making decorative things like vases etc shouldn't be a problem with HDPE (although i haven't tried it myself so i can't say for sure), but mechanical parts that need tolerances are probably not good for HDPE. Spiralize outer contour aka vase mode in 3d printer slicers is probably your best bet, with a bit low layer height to make sure the layers bond properly.

What's the Filament Diameter you are using? It's possible to adapt to 1.75mm?
@tiesto9797
@tiesto9797 5 лет назад
The output diameter is dependent on the speed of your filament winding machine. Also you should use filament diameter sensors.
@Mister_Pines
@Mister_Pines 7 лет назад
I'm curious to know if anyone has successfully done 3D printing with filament from this process. Another video here on RU-vid (and comments elsewhere by people who do a lot makes the case that the filament has to be very consistent in diameter to produce a successful print. The current PP extruder would seem to be very good for making pelletized plastic for use in an injection molding machine, where dimensional tolerances are less critical. For sure, progress in these things is in a series of incremental steps, and you have to start somewhere!
@milhooz
@milhooz 6 лет назад
If the filament does not have a regular size it will be difficult to produce good quality prints because the flow will change. Also some printers, like mine (Prusa i3 MK2S Multimaterial) need very precise filament diameter, else it will jam. I guess it is possible to have a correct diameter but it will require a lot of tweaking regarding the speed of the motor unless there is an automated optical calibration.
@tiesto9797
@tiesto9797 5 лет назад
With this setup, no you can not print quality parts because the winding speed is constant but the diameter of the spool changes as the spool is getting full. And as the diameter changes the speed of the filament getting pulled speeds up so it will reduce the filament diameter. This can be easily fixed by a diameter sensor.
