+G W. our rottweiler ALWAYS looked like a puppy! she died on her 14th birthday (really old for her breed, or any large dog really) and kept her adorable face her entire life. i'd have loved her the same regardless, but i always was so happy that she stayed so cute. :-)

+Paul Newman reminds me of us. we had a black lab who died suddenly age 3 despite a 24-hour fight to save her from an illness even the emergency vets couldn't identify. our only other dog was a rottweiler, and she died on her 14th birthday. of course it still felt too soon, but we realize how blessed we were to get her so long, especially after losing the lab so soon. did your older dog stay relatively healthy? our rottweiler was the picture of health for all but the last few months of her life! i'd say around her 13th birthday she started medication for arthritis, but on her meds she felt no pain & wasn't slowed down AT ALL. she developed what we suspect was cancer a few months before she died, and were about to put her to sleep to stop her suffering. the night before we were to make the final decision, i prayed that God would just take her that night so we wouldn't have to do it - we knew in our heads it was the right thing, but in our hearts we felt guilty & just so sad. and He answered, taking her overnight. i'll never have another dog i don't think - i'd never love one as well as them.

+sprinklefriend the last 6 months he went down hill but kept him going on steroids and other stuff the vet gave him. He used to drag his feet so every month we'd 2 dozen pair of socks held up by elastic bands to protect his feet when we walked the short distance on the pavement (sidewalk) . The day we ended it he came in thinking he was going for a walk. He was wagging his little tail stump and it took a lot of strength to follow through. But he couldn't hold his toilet and it wasn't good. But he had 15 good years! His name was jet . Great dog but then all our dogs have been good.

Paul Newman well i'm so glad he was healthy up to the last few months! yes, in the end our girl couldn't hold her "toilet" either... she slept on cheap dog beds & area rugs we could replace frequently. that only went on for about a month, and at first it wasn't all the time so we weren't going to give up. to be honest, we didn't mind cleaning it up, but we knew we had to act for 2 reasons. first, if she's doing that all the time, it means something's seriously wrong. second, she was the type of dog who would NOT have an accident. literally NEVER after the age of a few months. so when she started to do this, you could tell she felt HORRIBLE about it. she looked ashamed - head down, eyes up (if she'd look at us at all) when we found the messes. we'd always praise her - telling her "good girl!" and such, petting her, that sort of thing - but you could tell she was upset. she was so loyal to us and she wouldn't want to disappoint us. (people say dogs can't think these things, but i beg to differ, based off my own experiences.) so once she was clearly NOT going to get better, we were ready to do it, but my uncle killed himself so we had to deal with that for awhile. our girl died 3 weeks after that happened so it was a rough time for us. we're just SO thankful we got such a long time with her, and that she was HEALTHY for nearly all of it!
