*This video was made for those who don't have a scanner or Lightburn camera and don't want to spend the money on one.* The dog bone took all of about 50 seconds start to finish, the time it takes for a scanner to warm up. On the trace of the bottle opener, I should have just took another photo with less light shadows and it would have taken seconds as well. I could have also set the trace window to Ignore less than 100 (instead of 1) and most of the noise from the light would have gone away.

Hi Rich! Great video as I am wanting to do lots of dog bones! My question is......now that I have a template and my artwork will be prefectly fitted to the size of the bone tag.......how do I know where to put the tag on the laser bed so I know my alignment will be perfect when it burns? Did I miss that part?
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy 10 месяцев назад
I used the camera, but you can lay a sheet of craft paper on the bed and tape it down. Then run the job at very low power. Now you'll know exactly where to position it.

The further you can get the camera from the object, while still keeping good focus, the better. That reduces spheric and perspective distortion. When I cut toolbox inserts, I put the tools on the floor on a white background, take the shot with diffuse light with the camera held about chest level. Perfect silhouettes. Edit: also - forgot to mention, awesome and informative video. Thanks for posting!

Every time I think I am pretty accomplished with Lightburn, I watch one of your videos to bring me back down to earth. I can't watch one of these without learning something new. I am really thankful I found your channel. Heading over to Patreon now because as much as I get from your videos, it is worth the support. 2 questions though. First, with a diode laser, if I engrave on metal, I assume I have to paint it black first? Then if I use something to clean it off after, will the lines remain black or will the acetone take everything off? I could also use Anodized aluminum I guess for things like the dog tag but the bottle opener I would assume would need steel? Second have you done any videos on how you position your piece on the work bed to make sure it is going to print centered on the piece? Right now I am just eye-balling it the best I can. I need to setup my laser bed so that the laser and the work grid are fastened down so I can get a good repeatable position on the laser every time. Even so, I would be interested to see how you do this. Thanks again, you are simply the best single resource on the web for this hobby!
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy 2 года назад
Hi Jack, I wasn't engraving the metal, I was annealing it. A slow enough speed and high enough heat changes the composition of the metal and changes the color as well. I don't use any accelerant, except sometimes tempera paint, that washes right off with water. I work in absolute coordinates most of the time, so positioning is as easy as using the grid I burned into the waste board. I have a couple videos on that. Thanks so much for the support! I really appreciate it!

@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy 2 года назад
It is not capable of engraving metals Jesse. This was annealing, or changing the chemical composition of the metal by heating it. I have done metal annealing in several of my review videos. All you have to do is run a test grid at a very slow speed and high power.

Hello, since I am very new to lasering, can you tell me if in Lightbun can you import a picture of what you want and use it? Meaning if I wanted to import say a name in a wreath with a date on it, can I import it and engrave on a piece of wood without doing much in lightburn? Your videos are very helpful and thanks for your time putting them together.

Noob-o question (...just got my new laser up and running today.) You show how to get the design dead-nuts perfect in the precise shape in Lightburn. Coolio. But then, how do you get it perfectly aligned with the piece on the bed? My laser doesn't have crosshairs or a 0,0 guide corner (LOL, yet.) He'p me, Obiwan Kenobi!

@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Watching again. At 23:20, you finish describing making the design, and jump to showing the finished result. There's a brief cameo at 23:50-ish, of the laser lighting up the piece, and I guess that would work, but I don't have that feature. Is that what you're referring to? At 24:20-ish, you talk about doing it in a diode laser (mine is) but I don't see anything that'd qualify as describing how you aligned it. For clarity, I'm talking about how to align the piece with the engraving on the laser bed, not how to align the engraving with the shape in lightburn. That is clear, and I appreciate that.
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Год назад
You align it on a diode laser by framing it. You have to have Laser on when framing in the Device settings turned on, and the power on the Move tab set to 1%.

The same way as with any laser, run a frame or rubber band frame on the job. Your red dot laser has to be dialed in perfectly though on the Co2.

@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy
@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy 2 года назад
Trace the image and then ungroup it. Use only the outer line, delete everything else, or if it's a vector, offset the outer line. Then when framing, use the rubber band frame button and it will follow the outline. For something small like the dog tag, go to the move tab and set the speed really low, like 10mm.

MASTER !!!! YOUR YOUNG PADAWAN NEEDS YOUR HELP !! I've just bought the atom x20 pro, such a MARVELOUS TOOL! But I noticed an issue (really big for me): I am truly able to align everything PERFECTLY, even the smallest detail, but the machine misses the re-alignment when I work with a frame. I align everything (laser - frame - objects)... I engrave PERFECTLY... the laser goes back to "home" and when I put the new objects on the frame and restart the laser, it loses something from 1 to 3 mm from the previous setting.... really dunno why.... I swear I DON'T MOVE anything to make it disalign... I tried by forcing multiple "homings" and after everyone the issue keeps going on and worse.
