Since I purchased this generator, I've only tested it twice, once to run the house and a second time to run the A/C only; however, I wanted to share this with others so that you can see what this generator is capable of. During this test we were using roughly 2,000 watts continuously, but maxed out at about 4,000 watts and the generator maintained its RPM's very well. I'm very satisfied with this generator as it is plenty to stay powered during an outage; however, this is not a unit I would consider to use for extended periods of time.
Update: I did not mention this in the video, but it has already been brought up in the comments; when transferring the power, it is always advisable to wait a few seconds between source transfers and to turn off all breakers so as to not surge the generator with a large draw. Firstly, I switched them simultaneously because I'm sure the cycles are the same and I didn't want to cause the TV to turn off. This is not something I recommend, this was only for demonstration purposes, any other time, I will turn off all breakers and wait between source transfers.

You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules. 4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. One of the best videos out there of setting this up. I have the same exact generator I bought from Harbor freight open box for $225 in 2019. We were lucky during the 2021 freeze here in Texas; we were on a critical circuit that they did not shut off. We have since moved to out to the country with this same setup where power outages are more common. I am able to power our 1 HP water well with this with room to spare. We shut off the breakers for our 5 ton AC unit and water heater. Everything else stays on. In the summer we have a couple small window units to cool a couple of rooms. In the winter, we have a wood stove. I have 50 gallons of gas on standby plus fuel from the farm trucks should we need it. It is essential that we keep our freezers running during an extended power outage to prevent thousands of dollars in food from spoiling. I may try to make a video one day of our setup. Thanks for watching and commenting. You are on the right track. The only point for a whole house generator is to continue life as normal, and my setup is for emergency power providing comfort with the minimum. The setup I have will comfortably keep us going as normal for the most part.

It will drain your tank if you try to run the generator as if it were the electric utility. Even if I had a whole house generator I would run it like a portable, just a few hours a day for heat/ac, fridge, water etc. No need for 24/7 operation.

We have used the ru-vid.comUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

I ALWAYS allow the engine to completely exhaust the fuel in the carburetor. After the engine stalls, I wait a few minutes, put on the choke, and give it another start/pull on the cord. The engine will very often start, nearly coming up to full speed, then sputter out again. That clears out the passage ways in the carburetor, and clears the emulsion tubes, so gasoline cannot evaporate, leaving behind varnish. The problem is, I just don't know when I'll need it again, and I only test once every season. Each time I test, I run the generator for at least 1 hour, to heat the oil enough to evaporate the condensate from combustion. Short runs quickly contaminate the oil with water and raw fuel. I recommend changing your engine oil after the first few hours, just because there will be a lot of metal in the oil, as the piston rings bed in, and crosshatch is worn off the cylinder wall. This is especially important, if the engine is not equipped with an oil filter. a couple of oil changes in the first few hours of operation can make the difference between a 500 hour, and a 5,000 hour engine! After that, just change the oil once a year, and you should be good. Check the oil level each time you put fuel in it.

I'm a small engine mechanic. Running your engine until the engine dies still leaves a pretty large sum of gasoline in the carburetor bowl. Most of these engines now use the Honda engine design which has a carburetor drain bolt. You use the drain bolt on the carburetor to ACTUALLY drain the carb of fuel. You will have several teaspoons worth of gasoline still in your carburetor if you just turn off the fuel cutoff switch and then run it till it dies. I actually go a step further and drop the fuel bowl, wipe the carb bowl out completely, then reassemble and THEN put it on choke and run the engine a few more cycles. This will pull all the gas out of the small passages and leave the fuel bowl absolutely empty.

@@bubbatime That still won't clear the liquid fuel out of the emulsion tubes. To do that, applying choke while the engine is at full speed uses intake vacuum, to "slurp" that liquid out of the emulsion tubes, which have very small orifices that can easily be clogged by residual varnish. Some newer Chinese carburetors have removable emulsion tubes, that can be cleaned. Most don't.

I bought one of these after using a 5k for 10 years . Runs the house and a few window ACs . Have chest freezer , stand up freezer , and 22 cube fridge . Only issue is running deep well pump if everything else is running . This thing has been a life saver during winter power outages .

ptmmatssc sounds like on the comment you are overloading the wattage on your generator. Unless you left something out. A few window ac units will pull a lot of amps then you have all this other stuff. You can be hurting everything you’re running slowly but surely by dropping the voltage especially during LRA on refrigerators freezers and the 2 a/c units. Hope it’s not tho

@@mwatkins2464 If everything were to turn on at once there might be an issue . But running load vs start up is vastly different . Two 6000 btu window units draw maybe 10-11 amps when starting up together . Etc etc . Total load at any given time is well within limits .

I have the Predator 9000. I did the Tri fuel up date and it now runs on gas, propane and Natural Gas. I saw in your video you have a natrural gas stove. Last time our power went out, the natural gas was still flowing so I ran on that. I keep 2 30lb propane tanks full and 4 5 gallon gas cans of gas on hand. And yes its ethanol-free fuel and I also rotate my gas to make sure i have fresh fuel with Stable in it. Have fun, be safe. Very Good video.

I have an update after work I changed out my 10/2 from my unattached garage service panel from my 60 amp fuse and wired a 10/3 with 2 hots a neutral and ground to a outside plug 4 prong 220 turned off the main in the house but forgot to turn all other house breakers except Central air and to my surprise I ran full generator load to all remaining breakers at the time I had 4 flat screen TV’s running 6 lights and furnace and refrigerator with freezer with no problems. The Predator 8750 7’000 running watts had no problems after 20 minutes and my 4 prong 25ft cord wasn’t very warm at all at both ends. All I have left to do is install an Interlock at the main in the house Thanks for the video!

I just have I more question on my main in the house I have a 50 amp fuse looking at the main box it’s the bottom circuit on the left if I’m not mistaken I would have to run it to the top right to install an Interlock because the 50 amp on the bottom left feeds my external garage power and I don’t see any other way but to move the 2 top circuits on the top right to a a different area so I can put the double pole 50 amp on top right so the interlock will work any advice?

Not a problem, glad you liked it. This unit is definitely way too loud for a campsite, what you need is an inverter generator. A loud generator is likely to get you kicked out of a park, or you'll just be out of power

For camping, I recommend those little "suitcase" inverter generators. They're much less noisy, and you just don't need this much power!

I bought this generator 5-6 years ago, I turned it on once or twice when I was doing mobile welding. I finally turned it on today again after all that time of just sitting, without draining the fuel! All I did was add a bit of gas and it turned on after about 2 minutes of manual pulling. This generator is a beast!

When you plug in your 10 gauge cable to the house you need to turn the cable plug in clockwise to lock it. This will prevent the cable from pulling out or sagging. Thank you for this video.

I installed the same connector box on the back side of the load center.. Open and lock out the main breaker. Connectthe cord I made up to the box. Ground the generator to a ground rod I drove down in the ground.I use a 60 amp breaker for the HVAC system. lift those wires. Terminate the 4 wire from the box.Open all the breakers.Start the generator. Plug in the cord to the generator. Start turning on the individual breakers.Enjoy. These cheap generators are LOUD. Predator 8750 needs sound suppression which you can find right here onyoutube. Good video.

Make sure you have a load meter, there are even lights that can go up to 200 watts. 1000 watts couldn't even run my computer.

I have had the same genny for about a year,and I start mine once a month,run it with a load for about 15 minutes each time.I keep the battery on a maintenance charger and run the carburetor dry because of ethanol fuel.I also got an hour meter for 10 bucks so I can keep an eye on service intervals. Good video

I run about the same exercise; however, I run it without a load biweekly. I too have added an hour meter, and an ammeter display (it only displays the values for 1 leg, so it's not very helpful when connected to the house). The ammeter has turned out to be more of a gimmick as I won't be constantly checking values on the generator.

You have the best made panel on that house. The square D QO breakers are the best.....in my opinion. Now they are using the sqd but hom. Garbage. If your neighbors circuit overloads, it'll trip YOUR breakers, is my joke... Great conduit job by NOT an electrician, by the way. I would have done different but it looks like you did a nice job. (30 year sparky) May I recommend to you and all to install a "WHOLE PANEL SURGE PROTECTOR" on the panel while using any gen set. Even while not using one, have one on the panel to protect the entire home's circuitry. For a few hundred $ instead of buying half dozen of the $80 ones, it's one to protect all. Gen sets of all brands tend to give out inconsistent power.

I purchased this generator in 2014 and it's been rock solid. I store it in my garage with the tank bone dry and it always starts with one or two pulls. My only minor quibble is I noticed the cheap fuel line and breather hoses are drying out and beginning to crack a bit. I'm going to replace them next time I wheel it out.

Although we don't have power outages often, it's always a good thing to have and hurricane Harvey reminded me that if the power will be out for many days, it's always good to have a contingency in place. I didn't mention it on the video, but this is a temporary install as this is a rent house and we'll be removing this installation; however, if I wanted this to be a permanent installation, I would have done it differently. With this setup I don't intend to run the generator for any longer than 4-5 hours at a time with a 1 hour break and change the oil after 20-25 hours (if the power is out for an extended period of time).

JPG23 I agree you never know when you need it or when you can’t buy one because a hurricane is coming like Michael just did. We lost power with little damage ( I’m on the Florida line in Alabama) Egland Air Force base and Mexico beach area got whipped out almost totally. Egland base has not one livable building left. Mexico beach fl looks like a bomb leveled it out. A generator is always great to have around just don’t leave any gas in it after storing it, the ethanol gas is very bad for the carburetor and hoses. @@mwatkins2464 Yes it's always a great idea to keep a generator around and glad you're doing well. As for leaving fuel in the tank, I run my generator every 2 weeks and I shut off the fuel so it doesn't weigh down on the carb components. So far it has worked for me

This is a pretty good video. I will just say, I have a large 4200 square foot house in Florida , and at rest, it uses about 1800-2000 watts of power. This is with the AC off, and the water heater off. In most cases, if you are not running central AC, a HUGE 8750-9000 watt generator is overkill. A 4000 watt generator would be more than enough for most with and hours of continuous use (without AC). The 4000 watt generator has an engine that is half the size of the big generator, and will use half the fuel. Getting fuel after a storm could be difficult. Unless you NEED a large generator, a smaller unit is usually better. And since I was a small engine mechanic, I would remind you to completely drain the fuel system (using the carb drain bolt) and don't forget to change the engine oil every 50 hours.

I agree with Reactiv12 completely. Even though you have the interlock to prevent both the utility and generator connected simultaneously, I would NOT switch them at the same time. Do one, then the other. Lastly, I have the exact same Predator Generator and we run our central A/C with no problem. Like us, I’m assuming your dryer is electric. My wife would always choose the A/C over being able to run the dryer. With the exception of the dryer, we literally run everything in the house. Even our gas furnace with forced hot air fan.

You had better be careful about switching back and forth from live generator power to live line power, just to demo. Wait until the line power is down, switch to the generator with all breakers off, including the main breaker, then start the generator. Then slowly phase in the breakers you will need, with the main breaker remaining in the off position. Only turn the main breaker back on when the generator is completely shut off and disconnected from the breaker panel.

Agreed on that being something sketchy; however, as long as the generator is producing the right cycles (Hz), then the swap won't hurt anything. It's good practice to switch 1 breaker at a time and to allow time between mains. That's something I only did for this demo

In my state it's code you have to have a switch to shut off line power completely, because someone could get a zap while working on a line that they don't know is live

You might want to run this exercise at night. You'll find where you would want to keep some battery-power light sources always available. Invest in a good headlamp so you can have both hands on the gas can while refilling the generator tank. Also a 2"x6" board notched at one end and long enough to prop up the large extension cord at the socket would be handy.

Thanks for commenting, these are all great ideas; as for the lighting, I have a headlamp and flashlight in an accessible location, solar powered lights in the backyard and some battery powered switches mounted on the walls. I would like to eventually set a dedicated lighting circuit to a ups, but I'll do that when we buy a house. As for the extension cord support you mentioned, I only plan on using the 10/3 extension cord and possibly 14/2 for any small power needed in the backyard.

My priorities would be fridge, tv, internet, and phone charging. It is really hot where I live but the temp inside the house never increases about 78 even on really hot days. Would use grill outside for cooking and heating water if needed.

Good job on the video and your temporary installation. A few questions on your usage of the generator: Have you considered mounting a set of voltage/amperage gauges on the generator to monitor your outputs ? Have you considered adding a quieter muffler to the generator ? In a permanent installation, would you recommend an enclosure for the generator ? Do you have an earth ground connection in your installation ? Do you recommend use of fuel stabilizer with the fuel supply ? And how to you haul that heavy machine around on plastic wheels in grass ? I live in mountains, and we lose power sometimes, mainly in winter, I already plan to get one of the machines to power my MIG welder and homeowner construction stuff, but a home standby power connection is also attractive.

You did a great job on that install! I'm also a renter and when I had a well-known local (Tallahassee) electrical contracting firm give me a quote for almost the exact same installation, it was $834. They proposed to charge me a 350% markup on the parts over Amazon, and 4 hours of labor @ $120/hr. To screw an inlet box to a stud, run 4 feet of conduit, drill 3 holes to install the interlock, and connect the wires? I was actually offended when I received the estimate.

I keep my generator in the garage when not in use. I also built a frame out of conduit and made a weather proof and fire resistance tent to keep the rain out. The big difference was I put in a manual transfer panel isolate the breakers I want powered. I didn't power the air condition because of the load. Most buildings don't power the A/C because it will eat your fuel up. Okay for a few hours but if your down for several days you don't want to run out of gas.

That's a nice setup you have. Well, on your comment about keeping the generator in the garage, I did that at first and it became such a hassle to move that heavy generator around, so I decided to leave it in the backyard. I feel fairly comfortable with the neighborhood I live in, and in a desperate situation, if someone wants to take it by force, they'll more than likely be in a world of hurt.

@@JPG23 I was going to buy a tent but I am to cheap and looked how they are made and did it myself. That way if you have heavy rain you don't have to worry about shorts. The reason I keep it inside is I live in south Texas and it gets very humid. In time you get rust or corrosion. Used to maintain generators for a living, they can be left out side covered. I agree it is a hassle to roll it out but I want to get many years out of the generator. We lost power in our area for most of the day, at night power was still off. Everyone for blocks were sitting in the dark except for my house. Life goes on.

If I had any say on the engineering, I'd put the wheels on the oposite end,which I think is heavier. It would make it much easier to lift and move around if you lifted on the light end wher the weight shifted to the wheels.

I'm glad someone noticed this, you have a great point and that has bothered me from the beginning. The only reason it would make sense to put the wheels on the engine side is to prevent accidents or injury from the generator toppling over when raised beyond a point where the weight would take over.

The plug on the house looked to have 4 conductors. On the Generator Is the 30amp a 120Volt outlet or is it a 30amp at 240 Volts? Made more simple: Are you powering your house with 120 or 240 (120 to each side of the panel)?

What do you do if it rains while using the Generator? Or like Hurricane type rain and wind when you would probably need it most. Do you just leave it exposed out there on the deck? Is that okay? Or do you need some kind of housing for it?

Good question. Generators should not be submerged, but they can be outdoors and can deal with rain; however, it's not good for the generator. I have installed a GenTent onto my generator, so it's much more weather resistant now, although I'd prefer/recommend a shelter/enclosure for a generator

I use my 8750 for my 33ft camper for the past 1.5 years. I change oil on it often and keep gas catch screen clear and she has been running perfect. Many many hours through it and there are no signs of letting down. This is one of the probably 100 things harbor freight offers that’s a hidden gem!!

I have a service box in my in in un-attached garage I installed for my 220 Compressor and garage lights and outside garage lights on a 15 amp circuit and 8 wall plugs on a 20 amp circuit my old compressor I no longer own was on a 60 amp circuit I still have a hot a neutral and a ground running through metal conduit with 3 capped wires out. My question is can I install a 4 prong generator plug to my garage wall and a interlock in the house and plug my generator into my existing 3 wire conduit to the wall mount 4 prong plug and engage the interlock and turn on the circuits I’ll need in the house? My generator is 8750 max 7,000 running watts. Or will I have to run a 10/3 from garage panel to wall 4 prong plug?

That's a tough one, I would say ask that question on an NEC forum to get better feedback. In this case I would say no, you would need a way to isolate the generator power from utility power. I'd suggest a sub panel with a main breaker, without a bonded neutral, and an interlock at the sub panel to isolate from the main panel during generator use. I'm no expert, so I would suggest still reviewing all of your NEC and local regulations before doing any work. Best of luck, and thanks for commenting

I'm kind of new at figuring out what's going on because I'm looking for one that will do welding, , so I'm wondering when you plug that into your house, 240 or 110 or 120 and is it 30 amp??? Because my welder needs 30 amp to run at its best ?

The ratings on generators can be sketchy, and I can only speak for the one I own. Yes, this one can easily push 30A at 240Vac; however, if 30A is what you need, I would strongly suggest going with a generator that has a dedicated 50A outlet to give you that instantaneous draw buffer.

Is there any way to idle down the engine before shutting it off? I was taught to idle an engine down for a bit to help them cool down and also to not throw so much fuel into the cylinder that won't be burned. What is a "hard start kit" for the A/C, I've never heard of those?

It has one speed and one speed only. Hard start kit has something to do with the start capacitor I believe.

DW WD, Thank you, that makes sense. I could see using a capacitor to add a burst of voltage to get the AC started. As for the speed, I suppose I could use the governor linkage to slow down the engine once the load has been removed from the generator if it does not have throttle control.

I bought this very same generator for the very same reason - to run my house. My local power company sent a notice stating that they were going to cut the power to the neighborhood to repair some power lines. I had an aquarium with valuable fish and couldn't afford having them die. I used this generator to power my entire home. It ran the refrigerator, large freezer, large screen TV lights in the home and my aquarium. I was able to cook dinner and watch the evening news while my neighbors went out to dinner and came home to a dark home. They were jealous that I had power and they didn't. Best of all the generator ran for 15 hours before I turned it off at 10:00 P.M. :-)

just a suggestion if you were to shorten that HUGE extension cord from the generator to the main plug in, it would do a few things for you. 1. a lot more power added to the house 2. the cord would not heat up, and 3 the generator would run much smoother/efficiently. make it less than 5 foot for the cord from the generator to the house also get rid of the CFL lights and put LED lights, they use half the amount of wattage than a CFL bulb. hope this helps

Fuel capacity of 6.6 gallons, the 8750 can operate for around 12 hours at 50% load with a full tank (fuel consumption around 0.55 GPH).

I live in Butler PA we were hit with a massive power outage my next question is the refrigerator and freezer . their compressors can draw alot of power temporarly mainly when they start up. if i hard start can be put on them too? as the Harbor Freight stores are all sold out of Generators and the predator 212cc engines. my next question is can it run the heat too in the wintertime as im using a 90+ furnace and it has an ECM blower motor. on what loads it will put on the generator. when Harbor Freight gets generators i may get the 212cc unit as they said here i need a transfer switch to prevent backfeeding to the lines to the utility so workers don't get electrocuted. it was a winter storm that knocked out power that downed many trees and wires the ice did the trees in good here.

Wow, that sounds tough, I hope things get better soon for you and everyone else affected. To answer your questions, yes, the freezer, fridge, and heater will run just fine on this generator. I recently ran my generator while it was mildly cool outside, so we had the heater on as well as all of the other basic appliances. This generator can certainly handle it. You can also get the 212cc engine with their 10kw generator head and mount them on some 2x4's as an emergency generator setup, and of course, some kind of transfer switch or interlock. That's why I chose to set mine up early on when there was no emergency so that I can be ready if it does happen.

Derek. You need to find the specs for your equipment. As an example, on my 22cu ft fridge the current draw is only 7.2 amps. And my furnace startup is 13 amps. I could easily run these 2 plus a few lights with my small 3.6K watt generator. You should do some research before you buy the harbor freight 3200 watt (212cc) generator. From what I recall those had 2 13 amp breakers. Guys were popping the breaker with a circular saw.

In my state you can not lock the outside main box for fire reasons

That's true for some areas, but in my area it's legal to do so. The fire department is allowed to cut locks in an emergency

How did you do this in a rental home? I seriously doubt that the owner allowed you to run the wires on the outside of the home or make any changes to that electrical box

No landlord will care about value-increasing additions if done to code. This isn't though -- that conduit isn't wet rated.

8750 peak watts will handle a well pump. No more than 6000watts starting for a 3/4hp pump.

@@percyfaith11 You're right👍🏼 I've got a Honda Black Max...and as long as there's not a big draw goin on it will power the pump. You can tell though.. That's for sure.... generator sound gets LOW...thing is working....when the pump cuts off generator rpm's speed up.

I have two predator 8750's but since i never use them unless i need to i don't have many hours on them. have you gotten a lot of usage out of your predator? mine does pretty good powering my home and my a/c. 3.5 ton unit 112 LRA at the same time. i can operate my ac and most of my house at the same time.

I'm new to all of this... but I have the SAME generator. Can this kind of hookup be safe for electronics... such as LCD/LED tvs, computers, and other sensitive electronics? I noticed that you had your TV after the switch... is that safe for the TV?

I have something to explain to everyone about the safety and hazards of using generators. This is only to be sure that everyone is aware with everything when using generators. We heard that many people have died each year when using generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Here’s an advice about generator safety: please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide-and-seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. It can cause fire if fuel spills while your generator is hot. You should turn off your generator and let it cool off before refueling it. This is only a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Thanks for watching and commenting. No, I haven't used it in a real world scenario; however, based on the specs it should run for 13 hours on a full tank at 50% load (if I recall correctly).

Update: almost 2 weeks ago a transformer blew out leaving my whole neighborhood without power for 8 hours, I ran the generator for 6 hours, and it ran flawlessly. Only a few of us had power, almost felt bad, but it's just how it goes, some of us are prepared and most are not

I have the same unit ran mine for 2 and a half days during a wind storm that killed the power. Easily ran overnight with no issues. I shut it down once to check oil and overloaded once trying the hot water heater. Ran the house just fine.

As long as you stay under the amperage for the 120V circuit, I don't see why it shouldn't run it.

No, you don't want to have any leg of the generator more than 50% out of balance. A single 20a 120v load is not advised. In order to balance a 20a load on L1, you'd need at least a 10a load on L2. I wouldn't run more than 10a out of balance. Most people ignore this important aspect altogether.

You are able to do that; however, that poses a fatal risk for the crews working on powerlines during an outage as the generator power will also back feed the grid. There is also risk of electrocution for the user as you'll need a "suicide cord" to back feed the welder outlet. That said, this doesn't mean it can't be done, you just have to follow specific rules. For example; when the power goes out turn off the main breaker, turn off all load breakers, plug the generator end-to-end, start the generator, allow it to run for 5-10 min, and now only begin turning on the breakers you intend to energize with the generator (the main breaker stays off). This is not an operation I condone, but I can understand desperate times, mostly for climate control, and food temperature.
