Since I live in Illinois and my parent's house is in Texas I don't get to be here that often, thanks for patiently waiting for a more detailed video of this generator installation and how the shed/enclosure turned out. It's also great to see it holding up well after some exposure to very cold temperatures. Please see below for a list of the items described in this video and please feel free to ask any questions that were not answered in the video.

⚠️All generator safety instructions need to be followed carefully. Here are the safety tips: This is only a reminder for your safety whenever you use your portable generator. 1) KEEPING OTHERS SAFE: Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate and service the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Children often get curious about anything so we should keep an eye on them to also make sure they’re not wandering towards the generator. 2) WHERE TO RUN YOUR GENERATOR: Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house. 3)🔥FIRE HAZARDS: Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules. 4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords. Hope this helps.

Also, I found out there's no main switch and read townhouses are more of a sub-panel. Now, I'm thinking maybe getting something set up for my dads house. Your set up is similar to others I've seen and will help to plan out one myself. That insulation is a good idea, these things are loud. Thanks for the info. Take care.

Could we do something like this where it gets really hot? PS great video and beautiful work!

I don't see why not, I think it would work better if you install an intake fan at the bottom of one sidewall and an exhaust at the top of the other sidewall. This would force in more air, thus removing the hot air at a higher rate than just with an exhaust fan

I have a similar setup but the issue I ran into today is overheating. My exhaust is pointed toward the exhaust fan but it all shutdown from overheating. Do you have any issues with that running it in warmer weather? Otherwise it works great in the winter.
@JPG23
@JPG23 6 лет назад
I didn't give much detail about it, but if you go back to 3:14 I briefly went over the exhaust, the elbow is disrupting the pounding from the high velocity exhaust and breaking it up into lower pressure "hot air" that just goes up into the void of the enclosure, which is then evacuated by the high volume exhaust fan. I would suggest going with an attic fan, those pull a lot of air and are guaranteed to keep your system cool. Also make sure the engine has the required amount of oil and the engine doesn't have anything blocking its airflow so that it can properly displace all of its heat. Let me know how your setup goes. Oh, and about the hot weather; this is Houston, TX where we have brutal summers and short winters, thus far it is running just fine without any problems. I hope to soon be making a "1 year update" video. Thanks for watching

Yes, I'm a licensed electrician, and although I no longer work in the field, I keep my license up to date. This project does require some electrical knowledge; however, the electrical side of this project was very straight forward, the part that required trial and error was mainly the exhaust. I found that putting a 90-degree elbow on the exhaust helped break up the velocity of the exhaust and puts it into the void of the shed, at which point is pulled out by the exhaust fan. I connected to the cold water line which was about 2 feet below the ground so it was a no brainer for me, rather than paying for a rod. I like the shed idea very much, I have to roll mine out from the garage and quick connect the gas and power.

@@davefan69 Please feel free to ask away; fully assembled it can easily be carried by 2 people. Notice I put a handle on each side near the top? I assembled it in Chicago and drove down to Houston with it in a trailer. My wife helped me load it

Nice setup! Did you secure the generator to the floor? Curious if it will move around due to vibration.
@JPG23
@JPG23 5 лет назад
Good point, there's a sheet of plywood on the floor of the enclosure and the generator sits on that. Since the generator has pretty hefty motor mounts, it doesn't move around at all. Now after many hours of runtime, it's still in the same spot

Nice set up! Do you lose power a lot? I’ve been in my house for 13 years and lost power for a total of maybe 8 hours through the years. I’ve been kicking around the idea of a big generator, but now sure yet. I do have a little Coleman powermate, but running cords can be a pain and it limits what you can power up.
@JPG23
@JPG23 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching! They actually don't lose power often; however, last year when hurricane Harvey came through, they lost power for a few days and that prompted me to prepare them for future outages. So far the 2018 hurricane season hasn't affected us and I hope to keep it that way. I hear ya, it's one of those things that you may never use in a real scenario but it's the one thing you'll smack yourself on the forehead over during a power outage. I went with this setup as the cost was much lower than a standby generator setup and my dad doesn't mind going outside to turn on generator and flipping the interlock, it's that easy.

I used a Craftsman multitool
@JPG23
@JPG23 5 лет назад
To be more specific, it's the Craftsman Nextec Oscillating Multi-tool with the round saw blades, it cuts through that plastic like butter; however, I quickly learned that if you let the saw blade do the work without applying to much pressure, you'll make straighter and neater cuts. Also, don't use painters tape, just mark your cuts and follow the marks, it's a very simple process.

How did you attach the elbow to the exhaust
@JPG23
@JPG23 5 лет назад
I got a heater duct end cap, drilled a hole larger than that of the exhaust, drilled 3 holes on the end cap that would then align with 3 holes I drilled on the exhaust cover of the generator. I ran 3 10/32 screws through the holes on the generator cover, put some nuts on the screws to secure them to the cover and at the same time create some space between the cover and end cap. After that I screwed the end cap in place and after installing the elbow, I drilled 3 self tapping screws to secure the elbow to the end cap. Although it's such a simple design, it's strong enough to disrupt the exhaust velocity and energy

That generator appears to be right next to the house. That is not a great idea considering the carbon monoxide produced by any running engine. They usually say to get the generator at least 10 feet away from the house and point the exhaust in the opposite direction. Just a little worried for your safety. Please buy a carbon monoxide detector if you don't have one already.
@JPG23
@JPG23 5 лет назад
Good point and that's very important to prevent injury or death. Per NEC, a generator should be no closer than 5 feet from any door or window, which is why we've put the exhaust on the right side. This way the exhaust is being pushed away from the house. We have run it for extended periods and there is no smell of exhaust inside the house while it's running. Most importantly, to your last point, they do have carbon monoxide detectors throughout the house as part of the alarm system.
@mso4433
@mso4433 5 лет назад
@@JPG23 From the Consumer Products Safety Commission: Follow these safety tips to protect against CO poisoning.  NEVER use a generator inside homes, garages, crawlspaces, sheds, or similar areas, even when using fans or opening doors and windows for ventilation. Deadly levels of carbon monoxide can quickly build up in these areas and can linger for hours, even after the generator has shut off.  Use portable generators OUTSIDE ONLY. Keep them at least 20 feet from doors, windows, and vents that could allow CO to come indoors. You can get a copy of the complete report online for free. Please be safe.

@@mso4433Again, there are CO detectors in the house and the generator has been run for plenty of hours to know that it's safe in that location, now hanging out next to the generator would be a bad idea

Generator should be 20 feet away from doors and windows.
@JPG23
@JPG23 3 года назад
That number has changed so much over the years. As long as the exhaust isn't getting into the house, distance is relative; however, a great point to consider for everyone's safety. There is also a CO monitor inside the house. During the recent freeze down here in Texas this generator ran for 60+ hours without issue and the CO monitor didn't go off. That has been the longest outage this setup has seen so far

I guess you missed the part that it has over 30 hours of runtime with this very setup. It's not a full proof, perfect project; however, it's certainly not a setup that's going to easily start a fire
