Can I use a Predator Generator 6500 to power my whole house. Watch to find out. I use a generator inlet box, generator backfeed circuit, and a generator interlock, to safely power my entire house from a portable generator.
Here's a list of the parts I used to make it happen:
Reliance Generator Inlet box: amzn.to/3HsBwYX

How do you get power to your house during a blackout or when lines are down? Let me know if you have a similar set-up or if you do something totally different.
@marcberm

I need to change my setup to a proper inlet, circuit selection, and main breaker interlock. For the time being I do things the WRONG WRONG WRONG way, using a long suicide cord with male NEMA L14 on the generator end and a NEMA 14-50P on the other (with an optional adapter to 14-30P). That lets me backfeed via my EV charger receptacle (fully outdoors) or through a basement window via my electric dryer receptacle. Either way it is CRITICALLY important that things are done in the proper order: (1) open all breakers including the main, (2) connect the generator to the house, (3) power-up the generator, (4) close the EV or dryer breaker (whichever is being used for the backfeed), and finally (5) close the breakers for selected/critical loads. Main breaker MUST remain open for the entire time the generator is connected to the house. The shutdown procedure is the opoosite of startup (open all breakers, shut down and disconnect generator, close all breakers, main first).

I have the exact same set up, I use the predator 9000/7250. It's overkill since you can only run 28 amps through that cable. You would have to start using additional receptacles directly to the device to utilize more of the gen's capacity. 2nd point I wanted to make is that you need to be careful what you run off the generator, the power is not clean - my ups's were going nuts until I reduced the sensitivity. I would avoid running any sensitive equipment off these predator generators.

Same setup. My generator is just a little smaller (5300w). I have color coded my breakers for must haves, caution items, and only in an emergency. Also wrote a step by step procedure so if I’m ever not home, wife and/or kids can set up by word for word instructions. No thinking needed in an already stressful situation, just read and do. Headlamps at breaker panel so they don’t have to be searched out. Only change I would make is a larger generator and electric start.

Excellent video Sir. I have the generator and plan on a very similar setup. A few years back, we lost power due to a tornado. Neighbors brought over a generator and we ran extension cords in through the window. That worked great but a setup like this with the proper 'load shed' is a game changer. Very well presented and thank you!

I just bought this same generator from Harbor Freight. Our power has gonna out a couple of times so far this year for a few days and well, throwing food out of the fridge got costly!! The purchase was a must have if you know what I mean! I'm new to the owning a generator and your video was very helpful with ideas and things to think about. Example: we have gas heat also but didn't think about running the fan for heat during winter until you mentioned that! Excellent video sir!👍🏻

Im a backup power and gen tech for Cox communications.i will add something about the Internet.because we bought an farmhouse with electrical issues last year and i already had the Predator 8750 that i bought years ago.we couldnt get regular internet that usually requires a standard modem that doesnt require alot of power to run.we had to get a dish system through hughsnet.i found that it requires almost 48vdc at about 2-3 amps just to power the modem and dish.we have no commercial power coming into the house.we use 6 100watt solar panels,12 alphacell 3.5HP batteries and a renogy 1000w inverter -charger.we have to be careful and not leave the router - modem unless the generator is running which only runs when charging.or need to power heavy loads.Great video Sir.

I’m not sure this was mentioned in the comments but as you turn the refrigerator and or freezers on, they will use “start up watts” that are much higher than the run wattage. So just because the lights are on inside the refrigerator doesn’t mean that your generator produce enough start up wattage to turn the compressors back on. So make sure that the compressors are actually running. You may need to turn off other circuits to have the start up wattage.

Don't add ethanol fuel in your generator. If you you have that choice. And once you're done with the generator drain the ethanol fuel out. Start it up and run it till the engine dies, to empty the bowl of the carburetor. Or you will be going to need to go through that carburetor afterwards. in a few months. Ethanol is also corrosive. It doesn't store as well as your standard petrol.

I have a small Honeywell 3500 gen that has a120/240 plug and 2 120 volt outlets. I made 2 115 volt power cords out of 14/3 with double male ends. Turn off 200 amp main box breaker and most double pole breakers to keep appliances from overloading the gen set. One of the power cords will power everything on the left side of power box and the other power cord will power the right side of main panel box. Just keep in mind the capacity of the generator in total watts. If power is off for more than a day I fall back on a Lincoln welder with a double male end plug that I plug into my 4hp air compressor receptacle in the garage and turn on that double pole breaker. Hot water heaters are resistance heat that will not suffer from low voltage, so we still get to take a hot shower. The Lincoln consumes a gallon of fuel per hour but does everything if needed. The small Honeywell 3500 will run lights, fridge, garage doors, and the blower on my wood stove for 13 hours on 3 gallons of gas. problem solved for cheap price of 2 25ft. extension cords and 2 more 115 volt male plugs. keep it simple silly.

Basic rule during power outage is to ration and not normal use. Most efficient way to power the whole house isn't just a large gas generator. Its a mix of Gas generator and Power station. If there were few days of power outage. Gasoline generator is only good as long as you have surplus gas. We'll use Hurricane Ian as an example. Expect to lose power for next couple of weeks and no gas stations are open. You need both to run electricity for all your needs. Gas generator for large energy hog like small cooking appliances or sump pump in your case. Gas generator shouldn't be on 24/7. Rationed until needed. Power stations can be on all the time for refrigerator and freezer with few solar panels. Especially in Sunny Florida. Lighting should be all rechargeable work lights from Ryobi, Milwaukee, Dewalt, and others.
@TorqueWagon
@TorqueWagon Год назад
Good advice. I’ll have to look into a power station. For my use, I don’t live in an area that has ever been without power for more than a day or two, so I’m pretty comfortable with just the generator for now. I’m also considering a tri-fuel adapter for my generator that would allow it to run on natural gas or propane, in addition to gas.

@@TorqueWagon I live in Washington State. NW is known for wind storms and power outages. Mostly for few hours. Back in 2017, power was out at my house for 7 days. Others were even less fortunate. They were out for about a month. This is also a earthquake country. Portable power station are good for packing around if you need to bugout. For home, I would buy 2 or 3 cheap lithium lifep04 batteries, 2000 watt inverter, couple of solar panels, and solar controller. You'll get more for the bang.

Or you can buy a Honda EU7000 and run 24 hrs on 5 gal in Eco mode. We banked up 25 gal before IAN. Only went thru about 10 Gal before we got power back. Ran 10 circuits on reliance electric transfer panel. Also, can watch your wattage consumption on your iPad and see what exact wattage each item you add does to your load. Can't even hear it running from across the street...No NG or Propane here...
@TorqueWagon
@TorqueWagon Год назад
@@stbentoak5047 it all depends on your needs and your budget. That Honda generator literally cost 10x what this Predator does, so for someone who’s less likely to lose power for long periods of time, that’s a lot of money that can go to other survival supplies. I realize that I’m probably going to be out of luck if I lose power for more than a week, but if I’m in that situation I may have bigger issues to consider besides electricity.
@stbentoak5047
@stbentoak5047 Год назад
@@TorqueWagon Besides Hurricanes, we have violent thunderstorms sometime even daily in the Summer here, with Zapping lightning ready to take your stuff out at a moment's notice. There were people roving the streets at night after Ian listening for running generators to chuck in their truck and steal. They weren't hard to find roaring away in driveways while mine was behind my AC unit with a 3/4" Kryptonite cable and a 10GA umbilical entwined on it. They never seen it or heard it. Also, at about 250-300# you ain't chucking this in a truck. I can be up and running in 10 min with no worries about a gummed-up carburetor. After Ian, no one down here was worried about saving money. Having dependable clean inverter power was king to saving your property and sanity and electronic equipment that was vital like routers and laptops. Some are still out 12 days later. This was a long-term investment and I have no worries that this unit will work days, months and years into the future with parts still available...

If you can afford it and the gen is for backup power primarily, get an "Inverter Generator" which had a pure sine wave and is much cleaner for sensitive electronics like a Microwave oven. I run a construction-type open frame generator just like you do, I just don't power the microwave when the generator is supplying the house power. Also, even with a 5,500 running Watt gen, you can most likely power your A/C, you just need to get a soft-start kit installed (about $350.00) that reduces the surge current when the A/C first starts up (which can over power your gen). Once the A/C powers up with a soft-start kit, your gen can keep it and the rest of the house running. There are also tons of youtubes on how to swap out the carb for a gasoline/propane carb so in an emergency, you can run the gen on propane which is very helpful if you have propane heating already or a BBQ with tanks of propane.

I may be misunderstanding the question, but I think the answer is yes, I can power my breaker box through the 30 amp breaker in the upper right position (back feed). The main power has to be off for the safety of anyone who might be working on the power lines, and the rest of the breakers can get power from the back feed breaker.

Thinking long term. Id have a natural gas line point for a generator installed, it would also double as a fuel source for a BBQ. . A stove top that uses NG or LPG. Requires just a lighter to use, no electricity needed. I know when i took my electric stovetop out, it was marked as 7,400w thats a very sizable electric load for one item. . Depending on cost of electricity versus natural gas, id also consider changing the hot water and dryer over to gas as well. Possibly have gas lines ran to all locations in the home where a natural gas appliance could be used. So as they die over time, you could change them over. 0.01c

If your generator has a floating neutral, which is preferred in this situation. Then you don't want to ground your generator separately.
@yaknowwhothis5102
@yaknowwhothis5102 Год назад
You need to see if it bonded or floating neutral, if it’s bonded you have to unbond it at generator cause it’s bonded at the house leaving it bonded is against code and can cause damage to things. If you only run the generator as itself and not thru the panel leave it bonded . It’s easy to make a switch to go back and forth

You must have to store quite a bit of gas to keep that generator going.
@tomschmidt381
@tomschmidt381 Год назад
That is true and something a lot of people overlook. In my case we have 5 5-gallon gas cans with fuel stabilizer we rotate. I numbered the cans to make it easy to track. Normally we do not use all that much gas for the lawn mower or periodic generator testing so when the gas gets old stick it in one of our cars. The cans are sealed so even with the 10% ethanol blend have not had a problem. We have the 8750/7000 watt Predator and figure using it a few hours in the morning and then in the evening we have a week's worth of gas. Here in NH massive winter ice storms are the primary cause of power outages but during the past outages power either never went out in town or was quickly restored so getting more gas was not a problem. The reality is likely different in other locations so will need to adjust the amount of gas you store.

How much gas does it take to run daily?
@TorqueWagon
@TorqueWagon Год назад
I've never had to actually run it for emergency power, but based on the 8 gal tank capacity and the manufacturer's claim that it will run 14.5 hours on one tank, I think it would probably take about 15 gallons a day to run it at about 50% load. Not exactly ideal if gasoline is scarce or when gas prices are super high like they are right now.

Is there a way to tell what the max u can turn on?
@TorqueWagon
@TorqueWagon 2 года назад
The best way I can think of would be to use a clamp-on meter to measure the average power usage of your most used circuits. I know there are systems you can buy that will do that and send the results to an app on your phone. You can also find lists of estimated usage for certain appliances. If you add up the watt usage of all the appliances you want to use, then add the highest single starting wattage of those appliances, you would have a pretty good idea of how much power you need out of a generator.

...depends on what "whole house" means. Much of the electrical devices in a home are "nice to have" not "need to have." For example, one can get by with a small battery powered lamp versus turning on all of the lights in the home at the same time. If all of the necessary devices (fridge, furnace, well pump, sump pump, etc.) are powered, then the whole house is considered powered.

Just FYI that generator does not have a pure sine wave inverter on it so while able to turn on your house, Fragile and delicate electronics are in harms way from any spike that generator outputs... Laptops, consoles, PCs, TVs should not be powered by a non-Pure sine wave inverter.
@TheWilferch
@TheWilferch Год назад
I see this repeated all the time.....and my view is that it's overhyped. It's not so much the purity of power ( as claimed "good" and "necessary" as provided by inverter gensets)....as it is the potential damage from voltage spikes that is the real issue. So....running a generator that is not loaded to nearly max capacity with loads turning on/off , helps ( larger excess capacity helps here)...and....surge protection combined with Automatic Voltage regulation is the real way to save any electronics......the "purity of inverters" is seemingly barking up the wrong tree. And then this.....just what is "sensitive" electronics? Example...laptops have "bricks" in their incoming AC connection lines that allow 120-24- v, 50/60 hx operation as they take thus incoming power and convert to DC. Finally, we see the "Frying electronics" warning all the time in responses like this.....how many are repeating what they read....and how many have personal experience of damaging electronics? There are hundreds of reports of successful home-emergency-support done with common open-frame gensets.

How much fuel to use non stop for a week
@TorqueWagon

Based on a runtime of 14 hours per full tank (8 gallons), it looks like it would take about 96 gallons to run it non-stop for a week. I believe those figures are based on 50% load, so you’d use more fuel if you’re closer to 100% of the generator’s total capacity.

what do you make of this: Article 705.NEC702.6 contains an exception to the transfer equipment requirement: “Exception: Temporary connection of a portable generator *without transfer equipment shall be permitted* where conditions of maintenance and supervision ensure that only qualified persons service the installation and where the normal supply is physically isolated by a lockable disconnecting means or by disconnection of the normal supply conductors.” *Qualified Person.* One who has skills and knowledge related to the construction and operation of the electrical equipment and installations and has received safety training to recognize and avoid the hazards involved. (no degree or certification necessary, just basic knowledge training available everywhere) 110.25 *Lockable Disconnecting Means:* Where a disconnecting means is required to be lockable open elsewhere in this Code, it shall be capable of being locked in the open position. The provisions for locking shall remain in place with or without the lock installed. (you can't lock it with a chain or some other thing that is all removed when unlocked, the lock has to be a feature of your breaker box and be able to lock the main breaker open.) You CAN legally turn an outlet into a generator inlet back through your panel and do so without an interlock or a transfer switch if your breaker box has locking function, provided its a temporary connection of a portable generator. I cite that code as my evidence. Nobody should freeze because they think they'll be arrested if they turn the power on. (the real danger is the power coming back on grenading the generator, and the backfeed circuit not being up to the gauge needed to power all the circuits, things never mentioned in a "its all illegal no exceptions even though there really is one" videos.) I guess I'll have to make it. The flames in the comments from electricians would be epic.
@TorqueWagon
@TorqueWagon 2 года назад
It’s this kind of stuff that led me to carefully avoid talking about the legality of such a set up. Since local codes vary so much, it would be impossible to make a video that could absolutely claim a completely legal backfeed setup. I did have a licensed electrician make the connection in my panel and install the inlet box, but I installed the interlock on the panel myself. Obviously someone would want to check with their local code authority before doing something like this if they are concerned about being completely code compliant.
