Wild dogs - The plan was a sit and wait in a location the wild dogs have been spotted on a dead cow. I have had my 4G trail camera on this pile for a few weeks. In the week prior to this hunt I had regularly been seeing a few younger dogs on a cow carcass each afternoon. The week before I had shot another dog here with my 6.5PRC. My son in tow for his first experience.
This time I was back with my 6mm BR with intention to remove another or two of these troublesome predators. Watch the video and you'll see how everything unfolded to plan, which is rare but no complaints.
All animals shot are in alignment with the NSW DPI Wild Dog Management Plan 2017 - 2021.

it doesnt even have to be wild dogs. I live in the country where theres no leash laws. My neighbors lets their hunting dogs run loose at night and as a free range guinea fowl farmer it doesnt end well for me. Ive lost almost my whole flock to those dogs, down to my last two, thankfully a male and female.

10 years or so back I used to hunt a lot of ferals in QLD, including dogs. I set up trail cams a few days out to see which water holes they went to first thing every morning. Up here they often ran in packs (bob tails). When I found their water hole I would go in and get in position around 4AM and wait. I would ID the alpha male and take it out first. The others would not know what to do and hang around long enough for me to pick then off. I used a .243 Weatherby Vanguard on a bi-pod. Average range was 70-100 metres.

Last question; I have recently saw a dog wander out of some scrub not far from my bolt hole up in the sticks. 100-150m from the house. He was scenting, scanning then retreated, I figured I’d get ready to have a crack on the 3rd night at sunset but as you’d expect, that opportunity didn’t present. What would be you best couple of whistles/brands that might coax him out?

Hey Nate, noob questions here - do you set the scope at 200m when you have setup the overwatch spot, and then back it off to 100m for night, or on the scope do you know where to aim lower/higher depending on range, or finally, is bullet drop not that important with that particular type of weapon?

About 30 years ago I was part of a team that worked with National Parks and Vic Parks to clear out wild dogs. We'd go to the local town and put up flyers, ads in the local paper and on local radio, town hall meetings. All so people knew we were in the area and where and when we'd be shooting so they could keep their dogs at home those times - amazing how many people KNOW that their dog wouldn't hurt sheep or cattle. We were in teams of three with a shooter, spotter and park ranger. The ranger said "yes" or "no" if it was a dingo or not. If not a dingo we could hit it. Some days we were shooting across valleys at dogs up to 900m away. At the end of the few days/week in an area we'd have all the dead dogs displayed in front of the town hall. Funny how about 1 in 3 had collars. I'd have given a testicle for a supressor and thermal like you've got, but such things were just a dream for us then. I had a first generation ex-Soviet NVG. Damned thing weighed a ton and ate batteries alive. Got a sore neck from wearing it for more than half an hour and 4 AA batteries would go flat in less than 20 minutes using it. Supressors were strictly verboten at the time, even for registered pros. I had a Macmillan .50 bolt-action for the long work (+300m - 1000m) and an old Tikka .243 that was modified to within an inch of its life for shorter ranges (-300m).

Hi I have a question, can anyone answer ? what is the difference between a dingo and a wild dog in Australia ?
@MyChannel-b5f
@MyChannel-b5f Год назад
A dingo should be a pure or close to pure "dingo". Wild dogs are generally hybrid animals in my area. Generations of dingo's and escaped or dumped domestic dogs interbred, which makes them troublesome. Saying that, if either are causing livestock loss, we target them.

@@MyChannel-b5f Wow awesome you responded, thx bro. So I subscribed, but I am not big on hunting. However pest control I don't mind. Especially because you guys have an infestation of pests, it's like you fighting a war, of wave after wave of pests.

Another one bites the dust well done Nathan .How long have Sambar been that far north mate I have heard of them being a fair way south of you and also Rusa and Chital south of Sydney but I didn't know they were in the Hunter .And yes the KFC must be eaten.

Sambar have been around a while but are hugely nocturnal. We also have Chital in some area's (I shot one two years ago up here). Rusa, thousands of them a few hours north of me around Foster etc.

They are bloody weary in this location. I'm always trying the caller and with immature dogs about its more miss than hit as they are timid around other dogs.

I'm an animal lover and hate to see cruelty . Knowing the mayhem that Wild Dogs and Foxes can do I whole heartedly agree to culling such animals . I'd like to have some Humans culled for the madness that they can impose ...

Another good video Nathan. One thing about shooting is that you have to put the hours in. Some days it all comes together, some days it doesn’t. Good result to get that dog. People who are unhappy you are shooting them clearly know nothing about Australia and our feral pest problems.

Yep. Sad act keyboard warriors. I occasionally get asked how I could shoot animals. I like to go into an explanation how how you buy the rifle, ammo etc. Then how I secured the hunting property,. Then when on the property I then locate the animals, put the crosshairs on it, then I pull the trigger. Thats how I do it. They get somewhat exasperated with me. I like to also point out what I do is legal, socially and environmentally desirable. The fact they don’t like it is utterly irrelevant to me and has no impact on my choices.
