It was a revelatory week for the TLM boyyyyzzzz as they dove headfirst into the discography of English pop band Prefab Sprout.
Spoiler alert: they loved it.
'Where has this band been all of our lives', they wondered, cursing American pop radio in the same thought.
Although Prefab charted only a single song in the top 10 in the UK, the one-hit-wonder homage The King of Rock 'N' Roll, they had much more success there then they did in America.
Classic albums include the angular Swoon, yearning Steve McQueen, shiny From Langley Park to Memphis and the epic Jordan: The Comeback, as well as Paddy McAloon's (basically solo) I Trawl the Megahertz.

@@forestfc I bought TSoC in every format, thinking it was 'the end' of PS. Nope, thus began the wait for 'Earth: The Story So Far', 'Zorro The Fox' and LCTWWM. And then AH drops, without Conti... devoid of any real OOOMPH. structure, or someone to say to Paddy, 'Well, I'm sure Jimmy Young will play this'.! It's at this point that PM enters his own legend/backside, starts dressing like God, and never writes another classic. I blame Keith Armstrong, who 'protects him' - becoming a Consett recluse - instead of encouraging him to get back out into the real world. He should think on, that his hero, poor ol' Georgie Gershwin, didn't get the chance to quit.

Don't sleep on their debut single: Lions In My Own Garden (Exit Someone). It's not on any studio album but is really the blueprint for their early sound and songwriting. It really stands shoulder to shoulder with their best, IMO.

So cool to see the ice maiden in Joe and Jason’s. I managed record stores in dc when Jordan came out. The workers..pretty much whole staff…would be quiet in reverence. Everyone loved it.. on regular rotation in my stores….every sprout album As for the ice maiden…….I can still see my younger female assistant manager walk away from the register with the deposit doing a windmill Pete Townsend ..belting out., death is a small price for heaven……. One of the great writers of the era. Food for my soul

Brutal work cutting these down to a top 10 so I had to do a top 20 and even that was tough! Simply put these are songs I’ve always loved and can’t do with out. 1. We Let The Stars Go 2. Those are good lists, surprized that "The World Awake" didn't make it onto your lists. Interesting timing on that with drums. Another great song "I Remember That", amazing crooning vocal showing off Paddy's lower range. Such a wonderful band, wish they were still making music.

Agree about Bonny. It’s a heart-wrenching, beautiful song. Not only the Sprouts’ greatest, but one of the finest songs ever recorded. The one song I’d add that no-one appears to have mentioned is Doo Wop in Harlem, which I love. It’s a haunting and touching conclusion to what to be honest is in danger of being an album that overstays its welcome. I look back on the experience of listening all the way through its 64 minute duration more fondly because of its gentle, soothing exit song.

Naming the top 10 Prefab Sprout songs is like trying to name your top 10 favorite kids or grandkids -- IMPOSSIBLE!🤔 Nightingales is a total classic too and DR Big Band & Lisa Nilsson do a phenomenal cover of it. I can't say enough about how great of a group they are. I'm 62 years old and I've been listening to them since I was in my mid-twenties, one of the best bands ever, and completely underrated!!😏

This has been a great TLM music week. In fact, the whole month has had great selections by Jason. Even Be Bop Deluxe. Joe references Prefab Sprout predating what would be later called indie. They were from an earlier iteration of indie when the term simply meant you were released on an independent label. In this case, Kitchenware, even though the records were distributed by a major label. I don't think Prefab Sprout was on an island in being creators of intelligent pop music. While each had their own approach to it I would group them with The Smiths, Scritti Politti, The Chills, Aztec Camera, and Orange Juice. The best album and best song videos this week have been among the best you have ever done. My own list doesn't stray too far from their best known. The Chills’ Submarine Bells is roughly a thousand times better and more exciting than anything Prefab Sprout ever did. (And I don’t necessarily dislike Prefab Sprout, even though Steve McQueen’s second side will put me to sleep if I’m not in the mood for their super-soft brand of pop.) Other smart 80s indie pop bands that you didn’t mention: -Game Theory (just the best; Lolita Nation is one of the greatest unsung pop albums ever made) -Felt -The Bats (Kramzer nominated them in 1995, but their 80s singles and debut album are superior) -The Triffids -The Go-Betweens -Let’s Active

highly recommend the Peel Session version of Cars and Girls. recorded three years before the album version came out and while it sounds very different from the version everyone knows and loves, it still feels just as powerful. can only find it here on youtube unfortunately, but listen if you can!

No room for Old Spoonface in there..? (seeing as you're a proper hardcore fan, like me... and which versh of Donna Summer???). For years I had a tape of just the Bs, demos etc in my car... and I'd have to have The World Awake in any top ten, as my bootleg copy of Protest Songs was, for four years, my most cherished tape (till the official release)... had all the rarities like Rebel Land too. Funny story - I got Paddy's number from a friend of a friend at Lynx Studios, and called him to see if he'd be interested in possibly producing my band (I was good friends with Andy Pawluk, still am). but Tracie Young (Jam/Style Council) had just joined, and I didn't know that she and Prefab had an early ding-dong in their careers in the music press... got a call from Keith Armstrong telling me 'no chance' the next day hehe. Oh well, I was only 20, didn't give shit back then. I tried.

All great lists by everyone! For me, it’s so hard to choose because they’re my favorite band of all time, but if I had to, Appetite takes the cake for me. If Prefab didn’t have so many hits, these would easily be on my list. There’s a really great online article on Louder where Roger Manning, Jr. (from Jellyfish) basically praises Paddy and how Prefab Sprout was a HUGE influence to him. My top 10 would be (without any particular order except from "A prisoner of the past" number 1) : 1. A prisoner of the past (could be the song for the soundtrack of a popular movie) 2. Scarlet nights 3. Desire As 4. Nightingales (a bit cheesy but reminds me of musicals) 5. Doo Woop Harlem 6. Cars and Girls (why this song wasn't number 1 ??) 7.
