Steve was very afraid of not beating George young. But he did! He beat Jerry Lindgren too. I love my brother Steve Prefontaine. I was the oldest in the family and I watched him grow. From an insecure child to a dominating running legend. He had it all. Except he was poor all his life. After he died, his parents became rich. He had left stock in Nike that was worth a million dollars. He never seen it. Now his sister Linda has it all. Congratulations to my brother. He made it and didn’t know it. Love you little brother!

My brother died May 30. Get that right please. He loved his people. Their were many and he still has the loyalty of “his people”. There was never a new Pre in all the years after him. Their was only one star athlete and that was the great PRE himself. Come to the Pre Classic in Eugene, Or May 27&28th. You will see the best Stadium ever, the best runners ever participating, the Rock where he had his accident, the bench oh his in Alton Baker Park. The famous Pre’s Trail where. Meet and greet athletes and people from all over the world. Then go to the Padock restaurant and bar where Steve worked his way through college and he got free steaks and Bea’s special hamburgers. Bea was an older cook there, she kept Steve from starving in his college days. Lovely lady. Well. Anything else will have to catch me at the Prefontaine Classic by the finish line. Hope the sun comes out! Love you bro’!

Moments on “Without Limits”, as being the better movie. Only because they had more money to get better everything then we had in “The Prefontaine” movie. We were a low budget movie. Without Limits was produced by Tom Cruise productions. Tom didn’t play my brother because he said he was to old. That’s why he produced it instead. So naturally, it was better.

I think Ermey, O'Neill and Leto FAR outdid Sutherland, Crudup, etc, making this movie easily the better and more interesting of the two. It's both serious and breezy, while 'Limits' tries for breezy but continues getting stuck in serious. I don't think there's any contest here.

The funny thing is my dad starred in a Burger King commercial after the olympics and they were trying to recreate the end of his race (passing the 2 Kenyans and the "Russian"). They brought in some other 400m runners to serve as actors for the shot. The problem was my dad kept failing to pass them at the end. So they ended up having them run a full lap and my dad would just run the final 100m for the shot. I'm sure it's easy to judge their representation, but I feel like to most, even those who were part of it, it's fair.

Sadly, Bowerman's old school mentality doesn't hold weight with the athletes who were and are much more humble than Pre was. It's not about tail kissing when a boy from a small town, a drunk for a stepdad, no support from bio dad, & poor living conditions could use a break or better yet, encouragement. A little goes a long way. Trust me. I know too well. If I had known about Oregon's rep back in the 80s, I would've written a letter to the Coach asking him to give me a look, chance to prove myself worthy to reach the unknown limits of man's God-given ability.

You would have had to be one of the best high school runners in the country to get an audition with Bill Dellinger (Bowerman resigned as coach in the early 70s). It's always been a very selective program, even though Bowerman rarely gave out a full scholarship.

The film that this clip is taken from is amateurish compared to "Without Limits". Although, to be fair, there are people who think this one is actually more historically "accurate" concerning some of the events in Pre's life. I guess if you're a fan of Pre it's worth watching on some level, but I saw "Limits" first, and when I watched this one it was kind of "cringey" by comparison in terms of the acting.

@@magnusrylander Yes, my opinion, well done! Come on, now. Billy Crudup and Donald Sutherland vs Jared Leto and R. Lee Ermey, that's a first round knockout. Again, I grant that Without Limits took quite a bit of "license" with some of the events, characters, and chronology. But the Leto movie had kind of a "documentary" feel, and the amateurish acting by the principals only added to that. Without Limits was a great film, this one is not in the same league. You are better off watching "Fire on the Track", which was a great documentary about Pre, than this movie.

Steve Prefontaine is a classic case of premature death creating a legend when life would have made him nothing more than a nearly man. In '72 he ran out of gas and got nothing for it. Prefontaine would have changed the dynamic of the 1976 5,000 as Viren was allowed to dictate it and slow it down I doubt he would have finished any better than 6th in that race. Americans traditionally don't celebrate glorious failure among their own and Prefontaine would have suffered as others took the '76 spotlight for their successes. It's difficult to see someone of his impatience and mentality having the maturity to stay in contention for a medal in 1980 and highly improbable to envisage him then getting over the disappointment of the boycott to come back for LA in '84, though perhaps by then he may have considered the marathon instead.

@TheGiantKillers
@TheGiantKillers 4 года назад
@@ericbrown6757 You're indeed not wrong in regard to Prefontaine's ability in the United States. Unfortunately, the calibre of opponent in the United States at this time did not include {arguably} any of runners among the top 50 in the world at this time. He avoided the best in the world before 1972 and made lot of rash statements about what he was going to do. Needless to say, there was a deal of satisfaction among rivals that he let Munich empty-handed. Prefontaine went back to the States after the Olympics and continued to run against very poor calibre opponents, basically performing time trials. As any track athlete can testify, running in time trials and against world-class opponents are very different. May I offer you a suggestion that you may find useful. Being a troll who follows their opinion with insult is a very tiring occupation and ultimately leaves only the troll tired and bitter. It also belittles your own opinion no matter how valid. Could I suggest trying to offer debate with those with whom you have a differing opinion? You may find that in addition to enjoying engaging discourse with people from all over the world, garnering improved debating skills and gaining a more rounded viewpoint, you'll also gain the respect of others and perhaps a modicum of maturity. It'll also make it less likely for other readers to simply dismiss you as someone who hasn't been taking their meds.

@Richard Milliken It's one thing doing it away from the Olympics but quite another to bring it to the big one. Take Paula Radcliffe as an example. Easily the best female long-distance runner of her time. World Marathon record holder for 15 years and won everything in her sport. Come the Olympics. Favourite to win in all five of her Olympic finals and blew up every time, not even a medal of any colour to show for it.
