The HS Distance Revolution Begins Here. 1995. California. A junior from Jesuit makes a statement that will be heard around the country. After two decades of mediocrity US high school runners will see that in order to be great you need to do great things. Now, 20 years later, the US is one of the strongest running nations in the world. This is the kick that started the revolution.

Another statement was the way he didn't collapse to the floor at the end, Something the British Athlete Daley Thompson never did, He later said it was mind games, He wanted his competitors who gave 100% and were gasping on the ground at the end to look up and see him still full of energy (even if he wasn't).

If you watch the original video, when he finishes the third lap, someone near the cameraman says, "He's trying to steal it on this lap because he probably doesn't have it on the next lap." And by the end, all he has to say is, "Wow! Wow!" This guy went on to run at Stanford and on the 2000 Olympic track team in the 1500 meters, at which point his mile-equivalent time was 3:52. Very cool!

This can serve as a lesson for all of us. If you ever feel like you are coasting, just putting in time, etc. always be aware that you have it within you to dig deep and push yourself. If a person takes a task extremely seriously, and treats that task as the ONLY thing that in their life that matters, that person can achieve what they thought was impossible. Most of us don’t want to do that though because it’s uncomfortable, it’s not fun, it can be painful. But if you direct all of your mental focus, all your strength, dig deep within your heart for the courage and belief to do it, redirect all your love, all your fear, all your hate, you can find power in yourself you never knew existed.

He won the race outright as a junior (1995) and senior (1996). His 4:04.00 winning time in the 1995 CIF State Meet was the state 1600 meters record until 2001 when it was surpassed by Ryan Hall at 4:02:62

I recall in HS running the 800m Semifinals to qualify for Region. I ran the first lap almost full speed, 57 seconds. I then told myself I would hit the last lap hard to give space. The strategy worked until the final 200m. One of my teammates said it perfectly, “Gibby, it looked like a monkey jumped on your back”. I had literally hit the wall as hard as I ever had before and my legs crapped out. I somehow still finished Top 3 in my heat to make the Region Finals. But this guy pulled in the video pulled off what I couldn’t. Insane to watch!

His name is Michael Stember, if anyone's wondering. "However, as fast as Stember was running, he had a habit of running strategically, always finishing with a devastating kick that demoralized his opponents. As a junior, it worked well because no athlete on that level could match his kick at any pace."

yep, was amazing speed and time back then. Now you got monsters who run 4 min miles as a average, if you aren't breaking into high 3 mins, then your nothing. These guys practically sprint the whole thing almost. 1 min per mile, then hard burst last mile. Edit: Didn't want to take away from stember, was trying to point out, his technique is one piece of the puzzle that makes us have such fast modern day runners.

If that moved you…. What u felt was what moved his feet. Sometimes it’s slow sometimes it’s inexplicably fast. Let it be what moves u. Godspeed to u all.

Kicking with 700m left is definitely a power move. I love how no one even attempted to go with him, they knew they had no chance
