The theropods were the largest land carnivores but some predators in the Triassic rivaled even the mightiest of the dinosaurs.
Today we breakdown the largest quadrupedal carnivore to have ever lived, the Triassic terror itself, Fasolasuchus.

Ah Fasolasuchus, the King of the Triassic, the crocodilian lion, the Allosaurus or T-rex on four legs! I am so glad you covered this monstrous Prosauropod hunter! There is another apex predator of the Triassic I would love for you to cover. This would be Smok Wawelski (Smauk Vah-Vell-Skee), a big, bipedal and bone-crushing archosaur of Poland named after a mythological dragon! It had features found in both Dinosaurs and Pseudosuchians, making its classification a debate.

Fasolasuchus in 65 ended up being a Tyrannosaurus with 4 legs🦖

Gorgosaurus taht's an underrated Carnivore that needs to be in the spotlight for the video

If the Triassic extinction never occured I can easily see the Rauisuchians and overall all the Pseudosuchians that did go extinct would still have their respective niches. Their extinction was done by the increased volcanism and climatic changes that they couldn't survive. But if that didn't happen then the later Mesozoic with a far greater Pseudosuchian presence would be extremely interesting to witness. Imagine the landscapes and foodwebs that could have been, the competition they would have with potentially different dinosaur species. Such an alternative reality indeed is interesting to imagine.

This is a really good speculative project idea . I would love to see the rivalry between Rauisuchians and theropods for the apex predator niches.
@savharris5702

@@lightman3581there likely wouldn't have been a rivalry to be had. Their dominance almost certainly would've kept theropods from reaching sizes big enough to challenge them. Maybe if a Theropod group somehow found an environment where it could grow into an apex predator, without interference, then rejoined the suchian population.

They’d be the dominant predators throughout the Mesozoic, while theropods were kept confined to micropredator and mesopredatory niches, save for on islands which lacked large pseudosuchian apex predators. Ironically, the survival of the large terrestrial pseudosuchians would probably allow at least some of the non-avian theropods to survive into the Cenozoic.

I dont hate on 65 for the "dinos" I hate it becouse its boring and has bad script and pacing I usually love bad dino movies but not 65. I watched dinosaur prison recently. Its got killer designs, people dying and goofy stuff. Check it out

I love that thumbnail art, references a very infamous picture of a crocodile and a vulture for anybody in the cheap seats

While Fasolasuchus is indeed one of the (if not the) largest non-dinosaur land predators, 3-4 tons is likely an overestimate. 2-2.5 tons is more likely. This would still make it larger than any predatory land mammal or sebecosuchian.

Just discovered your channel Raptor Rex ; and already liking your style The narration part is a very good idea, however, you should add small trivia to it, to get it out of the way, first, but also adding some "credibility" to your story. You already sound like you're narrating a dinosaur documentary, play the role to the fullest !

65 was a dinosaur movie with virtually no dinosaurs. And it was dull.

If this thing was dropped into South America during the Miocene, not even the largest terror birds, or even Barinasuchus would dare mess with it. The only thing that could even threaten one of these would probably be the large caiman Purussaurus.

Can you please make an episode for Mapusaurus in 15 March ? It’s gonna be a special day for me and I would love to see one of my favourite dinosaurs get covered by you😊

Rai's would probably have stuck around for a while, but their denser builds may have impeded any forms notably larger than Fasolasuchus, so I would predict that dinosauria would rise to dominate the terrestrial carnivore niche eventually.

No, because there would be too much evolutionary pressure for them to evolve into macropredatory roles.

Is purusaurus not the largest terrestrial non theropod carnivore? I don’t know if caiman/alligator/crocodiles rly just crocodilia count for that with their lifestyle

Based on my near non-existent knowledge of rauisuchians, I think they would've prevented large predatory dinosaurs from evolving. I don't think 65 should be let off the hook just because it's the first non-Jurassic Park big budget dinosaur movie in years. It's still a boring film, with or without the dinosaurs. I agree that ppl can be a bit too harsh on it, but setting high yet reasonable standards (like having the dinosaurs look like dinosaurs instead of AI-generated monstrosities) means that producers have to put in effort. If they succeed, then they get our money and we get a good dinosaur film.

If dinosaur movies were good movies first, then there would be no worry about money coming in to support good projects. Unfortunately the industry is plagued by schlock directors and producers just looking to make a quick buck and exploit marketability of dinosaurs and the JP nostalgia. Not a care in the world for good writing or special effects, much less paleontological accuracy. (Also JP IS the only good JP franchise movie :) )
