A musical prelude is a short composition that is traditionally played as an introduction to a larger musical piece or as a brief encore. The Gershwin Preludes are a prime example of early 20th century American music during the "Roaring Twenties" that were influenced by Jazz, Latin, and Eastern European Jewish folk music. The three preludes by George Gershwin were originally published from 1926-27 and were part of his plan to be included in a collection of 24 preludes inspired by the 24 Chopin Preludes.
This arrangement transforms the original piano solos into duets with marimbas and vibraphone while maintaining the integrity of the original compositions. The preludes can be performed as a set of three, or individually.
Prelude I (Allegro ben ritmato e deciso): Originally in Bb major (raised a whole step to better fit the range of a 5-octave marimba), this prelude features a blues motif and Middle-Eastern and Brazilian rhythms with a strong jazz feel - a combination that was new to the audiences of the 1920s. This prelude has been arranged (by me) for marimba duet.
A big thank you to Brian Blume & Tim Perry for their masterful performance and recording of my arrangement!
And a bigger thanks to TapSpace, where you can purchase my Gershwin arrangement and several other fantastic percussion pieces! www.tapspace.c...
