Premade Concrete Canvas Tents - Just Add Water

Concrete Canvas, is a concrete impregnated fabric, that once water has been added to it, it hardens in a durable waterproof & fire resistant layer. Essentially, it's concrete on a roll.
The canvas is made of 4 layers, a fabric surface to hold the concrete pre mix in place, fibers that link the outer players together so it hold a uniform shape regardless the angle you use the material on, then you have the dry concrete mix and lastly you have a waterproof PVC backing.
Concrete Canvas is a low mass technology which uses up to 95% less material than conventional solutions. A single pallet of Concrete Canvas can cover the same area as two 17T concrete mixer trucks.
Thanks for watching

★★★ *FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE VIDEO / FACT UPDATES* ★★★ *1) The Tent is too expensive and not worth it* - Yes you are right, for you and me. But it was probably design for organisations that require a building to be setup fast in remote locations, like the military or emergency reaction forces in storm damaged areas. A place that can be setup real fast and outfitted as a HQ, to organise forces, and once finished they just have it demolished. *2) Concrete is not waterproof, the tent will leak* - That is why it has a white plastic membrane inside, so the water stays outside the plastic, plus this tent was not designed for long term conditions, just quick reaction forces like the military. *3) It does not have windows or ventilation, you will suffocate unless you leave the doors open* - well maybe that is what they had in mind with the design, something quick and sturdy for short term duration as a Headquaters and if need be I am sure they can always cut a hole and fit a vent. *4) Most of you are focusing on the tent and not the material itself* - The tent is just one small factor of what this video was about and what this material is good for and what it can do. *5) Most of you are saying the Military would never use these tents* - My opinions above are just that, opinions on who might use these tents, no one is saying just the military will buy and use them. I just check the Concrete Canvas website, these tents are still listed as an item they sell, and they say they have a *"designed life of 10 years"* Here is the webpage for these tents - www.concretecanvas.com/cc-shelters

an interesting application of the thinner variety, if it had marine-grade concrete: DIY boat hulls. My grandfather made a sailboat hull out of mesh and a thin layer of marine concrete. Less complicated to do then fiberglass, and more rot-resistant then wood. provided there was a good way to seal the seams, two of those rolls over some formers could churn out a 30-ft/10m boat for a fraction of what fibreglass typically costs (since you need a wooden core, then fiberglass and resin layers on both sides). It wouldn't be quite as light, but would likely weigh less then Grandad's boat did, and that sailed fine back in the day (It was before my time, though he still had the hull when I was born)

@theoriginaldylangreene
@theoriginaldylangreene 3 года назад
Very interesting idea. It would be very quick to lay up a hull over a former with this type of product. Much quicker than having to mould cement around the mesh reinforcement. The most important part of a ferro-cement hull isn't the cement, it actually doesn't have to be a marine grade. As you paint the hull anyway. The most important part is making sure that the steel mesh reinforcement is marinised. I wouldn't even use galvanized; high grade stainless or go home really. Too many horror stories of rust intrusion expanding inside the cement and causing the hull to fall apart in chunks. Still, a well made ferro-cement hull is stronger than any other.

Just watch out for the load bearing characteristics of containers. They are very strong at corners for vertical stacking, but you are not supposed to even walk on the unreinforced top (roof). I thought of using concrete canvas for hardening a simple either above ground or buried container house the first time I saw info on it. The rolls are also pretty heavy to move and unroll, requiring a pretty hefty forklift, front end loader, etc.

A lot of criticism of this product seems to be from people who seem to think this is a consumer product. That's completely misguided - this product is clearly aimed at civil engineering and military use where budgets are large enough to afford this kind of thing. My main concern with this outside of the obvious price issue is the longevity. With the water-works example it seems like the vast majority of the work has to be completed anyway so the only benefit the concrete canvas seems to have over pre-fabricated elements or poured-in-place structures is it's weight and thus transport costs. However at only 10mm thick at best any water way would quickly erode through it meaning the channel would need constant maintenance. This is not to mention the dubious structural integrity of such a system when faced with things such as landslides, storm surges or otherwise. Either way it seems like the money saved in transport costs will be far less than the money spent on maintaining the structure. As for the 'military' application with the 'tents'...it's laughable. The aim of the product is to establish a reasonably hardy shelter in a quick time-span, yet it accomplishes neither by military standards. A thin layer of concrete like this probably won't even stop some small arms fire, and having to wait 24 hours (after supplying the water as well) is a long time. In a 'hot' combat environment sandbags, Hesco barriers and other such devices are far superior in protection while being logistically simple and quickly established (not to mention the incremental nature of their construction. Every sandbag filled is a little extra protection - as opposed to this tent thing which is nothing until it's fully cured). In places not expected to receive incoming fire I see no reason why normal canvas tents can't be used as they have been for centuries. Tents like these are far lighter and cheaper and don't require anything but manpower to erect, unlike the concrete canvas 'tents' which demand both a water supply and a source of compressed air to be usable. It's a nice idea, and it no doubt has it's advantages - however it costs far too much for far too little gain over the competitors. The bonuses it claims to grant are only counteracted by the flaws of it's design.

I just did a quick Google on that. $23,000 to $30,000. A lot of better, cheaper ways to do that .. Hell, buy a used, run-out camper trailer and park it on a gravel pad. Hook up a generator and you have a cozy little place for less than $5,000. Hmmmmm. Damn, that sounds like a good idea. I might have to look around for a patch of land to put one on ...

Just watch out for the load bearing characteristics of containers. They are very strong at corners for vertical stacking, but you are not supposed to even walk on the unreinforced top (roof). I thought of the same thing for a simple either above ground or buried container house the first time I saw info on concrete canvas. It is also pretty heavy to move and unroll, requiring a pretty hefty forklift, front end loader, etc.

@JourneysADRIFT
@JourneysADRIFT 4 года назад
yet, really not much more expensive than a normal military tent. Typical tent systems used by the Government/UN run anywhere from 10-30K+ (DRASH). used tents can easily sell for 5K+. Many of these systems are designed and priced for long term semi permanent use in areas where constructing any form of structure would typically require more resources and manpower than immediately available. Tents of that sort are more expensive than people would typically think, but most people aren't setting up semi permanent installations in 3rd world countries or operating a small forward operating base and the materials used in their construction is far, far better quality than what most associate with "Tents" they would buy at REI or Walmart.

Nice, but too expensive. You could do almost do the same thing with vinyl bags that contain cement powder. Just spread out a bag on the ground, then add water. It will harden into a panel in twenty four hours. Total cost for an 8x12 panel would be around a hundred dollars. You could even make one long panel, which can be lifted by a few men, and then folded into a box. And it could have window and roof openings. Always look at cost. There’s usually a cheaper way to do just about anything.
