#thelifeandsadending #classictvshows #classictv A mini bio of actor Richard long. He starred the tv shows "The Big Valley" and "Nanny and the Professor".
Liked Richard Long very much . House on haunted Hill, Ma & Pa Kettle, The movie The Stranger. Wow so young to pass . Traditional (I do not want to be cremated). Thanks Steve
Hard to believe it's almost 50 years since he died. I was on a Christmas vacation from my job and remember reading about it in the paper. I don't know where the time went.
Where I lived in the 60's we had one TV Station and it was a CBS affiliate so I never saw The Big Valley. Just discovered it on INSP Network and I love that show. Richard Long was great. A green burial is my first choice, cremation 2nd. None of that embalming, caskets and vaults for me!
He was a TV dad. Professor Harold Everett was a widower mathematics professor who had three children and an English nanny taking care of the house. I also remember The Big Valley. He played Jared Barkley.
First....cremation... land is precious and getting smaller and smaller. It's really sad when someone passes so very young. I remember most of his characters. I really liked watching him. We are blessed to have him and all he gave us. At least he lives on in the movies, etc.
It's fun and interesting, watching Richard Long's work through his career and seeing him progressing as an actor from the kid in 1946 to the man in 1974. He might not have planned on it, but once he became an actor he wanted to be a good one and said he liked the early 60s best because he got to play all kinds of roles that helped him grow. I just wish Warner Bros. would cut loose their library so we could see more of him and other excellent actors who worked for them.
If you mention ma and pa kettle to the youth of today they’ll have no idea what you mean. I’ve had breakfast at a restaurant named The Egg and I, it was delicious. More great content, thanks for posting
My family has a private cemetery high up on a hill in southwestern PA, but I plan to be cremated and my ashes scattered to the winds. On another sad note, I recently learned the boy who played Longs middle child on Nanny and the Prof hanged himself when he was still young. 😢 Steve, another fine tribute thank you. ❤
He never planned to be an actor, only wanting to get an easy English credit in high school, and got his first role because a couple of high school friends hitched a ride with a casting agent looking for someone to play Claudette Colbert's son.
I'll be cremated because it's cheaper and it will be less of a financial hassle for my loved ones. I liked his acting in Big Valley and my mother was friends with a woman who knew him. I remember as a boy having cowboy hats and toy guns and all that stuff and her friend would be over visiting & always say you look like you should be in Big Valley, when I see Richard I'll see if he can get you on the show. This joke was pretty ridiculous as I'm sure by that time they weren't making episodes anymore but I was just a kid & loved the show and cowboys and Indians. All of the people in Big Valley were awesome in my opinion.
I remember watching Nanny & The Professor in syndicated reruns. He played a TV dad, a widower mathematics professor who had three children and an English nanny. He passed away on December 21st, 1974, four days after his 47th birthday. Myra Corday, I remember her working with Clint Eastwood. She was the waitress who put a lot of sugar in the coffee. Cremation. Ashes to be scattered in Lake Ontario.
I couldn't decide if I loved Nick are Jarred Barkley on the Big Valley. One of my favorite shows as a kid. He was very talented. I don't know about burial but I think Cremation, the thought of being buried give me the creeps.
Absolutely marvelous actor. I watched everything he was cast in. Loved him in the Big Valley also. Some tough times in personal life with his first wife. Very sad. Also gorgeously handsome ❤. Definetly cremated and ashes dispersed in places I've chosen. Another good video. 👍
Now this is what I'm talking about Steve? What a great way to end this video... With a laugh & a smile, and instead of you editing it out you kept it in and made it lighter! Thank you for that Steve. Keep making these AWESOME videos!!! 👍
He had a very diversified and long career (pun not intended.) Used to watch Nanny. Thought he was much older than 46 when he passed. RIP I'll probably have the traditional burial but who knows!
He may have died young, but he's definitely left an indelible mark on TV and film history by being in so many things over the years! On another note regarding Ma and Pa Kettle, before the days of instant trivia lookups, for a brief time I actually thought it was possible actress Fran Ryan might have actually been Marjorie Main! Haha!
Mr. Long's last regular television program was a comedy called 'Thicker Than Water', in which he played the brother of Julie Harris's character. Two magnificent actors in an underrated comedy--what is the chance ot that? Moving right along, this coming December will mark 50--yes--50 years since Mr. Long passed away. About a week later, another icon of entertainment passed away--Jack Benny.
Long was a very fine actor. He had a couple of "firsts" in his career. The newspapers during the Korean War said Long was the first "Hollywood actor" drafted into the war (he had already done the Ma and Pa Kettle series and was well-known). When his Rex Randolph was moved from Bourbon Street Beat to 77 Sunset Strip, it was the first time a tv character was moved from one show to another already existing show. And I'm giving my body to science - they'll use it for whatever and cremate what's left.
Suzan Ball Long was only 21 when she died of cancer. She had it when they met. Doctors told him her condition was terminal, but they had him keep it from her (the 50s....).
It seems everyone smoked in those days. A lot of stars died young, in their 40s and 50s because of smoking-related illnesses. Richard Long had heart problems, he should not have been smoking for sure, he did not take care of himself in that regard. He was a heavy smoker and drinker. His first wife Suzan smoked too, and died of lung cancer. Perhaps then, in the early 1950s, they did not yet associate smoking and cancer.
Richard Long…was a handsome man! Enjoyed much of his work but don’t remember the Ma and Pa Kettle shows. When my dad passed in 1992, I bought a plot next to his but just 2 years ago I changed my mind about burial and sold the plot and purchased a niche in the Columbarium to be cremated.
He was all over TV back then and into the 70s. When they told him they wanted him for Nanny and the Professor, almost the moment Big Valley ended, he wondered why. He said he'd only been "off the tube for half a season." He didn't think the public wanted to see so much of him.
Traditional burial for me. I really love your videos. They are very enjoyable. You really have a knack for getting the story across with compassion and humor when appropriate. I was wondering if you have any of the great actors from my home state of Connecticut on your future list? Katherine Hepburn, Rosalind Russell, and Ernest Borgnine just to name a few. I bet Ernest Borgnine would be 'interesting' with his 42-day marriage to Ethel Merman. Thank you for your great video.
Cremated. Why waste land space. I have lived a long life, very lucky. People should be happy if you lived long enough to see your kids have kids. Lucky to live in America.🇺🇸
I’m giving my body to science! They can have it. I refuse to be buried. The horrors of being underground in a box sounds horrible. I told my family that if they bury me I’ll come haunt them. I’d rather decompose above ground in a medical lab being taken apart by eager young medical students and surrounded by my fellow dead. Our spirits can converse hovering above our bodies. Sounds wicked!
I had to watch you giggle several times when you asked your "morbid question" because you looked cute as a button. My body will be resting in a Community Mausoleum......
When I pass away I would prefer a Star Trek phaser set on maximum power to disintegrate me or maybe go into one of those disintegration chambers on the A Taste of Armageddon Star Trek episode. I can't think of any other way to go.
I Recently watched his last movies. Few weeks ago. He was a great actor. I’ll probably be cremated and ashes put in garbage bag and placed in the bin. Not that I care I won’t be here to see it lol.
The big valley a great western among others liked him in 77 sunset strip and bourbon street beat too bad they don’t show them much or realease them on actual DVDs got some episodes on dvd from a private collector a while back better than this garbage that’s out today and I’m only 57 years old
