Absolute agreement with you chaps. Far too many kits. The classic Arsenal Adidas shirt worn at Anfield in 1989 was used over 3 seasons. The brilliant Weetabix kit from 1997-99. The invincibles was 2002-04. The manufacturers would still make their money. The Arsenal away of last season - the black shirt/shorts was their most popular seller ever. The first time the away had outsold the home. Heard even the players were giving the kitroom away to friends and family they were that popular. Sold out everywhere. Adidas could easily have that over 2 seasons.

Thank you! I’ve been saying this to myself for a very long time. The premier league can can pride itself as the most watched and the most competitive league, however the kits cannot say the same thing. They’re worlds behind the Bundesliga in that regard. I look forward to actually seeeing their kits unveiled every year. Every teams kit is smart and crisp and creatively driven. Step it up, England.

Premier league kits now sell 2 per club. One replica kit which used to be standard is now £100 Vs what was £50 in 2018. They then offer the fans a £50 shirt which has noticeable markings missing which serves no purpose other than to point out it's not the £100 version. So thanks premier league kit designers you've now created a class divide amongst fans

The point about the counterfeits was really on point. It’s harder to justify paying as much every season for rather incremental kits. Economic hardships not withstanding, yearly purchases of kits that aren’t that different is more of a collector’s habit rather than a fan’s. They’re getting more expensive, there are 3 main kits, occasional 4th kits like the Barca one or the PSG one last season. Counterfeits nowadays have crept up in terms of quality in my opinion. My counterfeit Liverpool shirt is mighty close to the one in store, and cost me 1/10th. Is it ethical? Idk.

@@TheKitBreakdown Love your content and the holistic view towards shirts. It's interesting to understand what it means to have a football jersey or the story behind. Most channels just cover the shirt, how it looks, whether they like it and that's it. To get a proper review from someone experienced is rare. On to the counterfeit industry bit, definitely concerning, but I do feel companies claiming that don't have much moral high ground to begin with. The economic crunch could either make people more cautious, or let the counterfeit industry boom, coz that industry isn't stopping now. It's also not justified to only blame teams and manufacturers, these are million or billion dollar establishments, they definitely know there's a market to cater to, it's down to the people now.

I gave up on buying my teams shirts years ago, mainly because I’m 43 now and a tad over weight lol but also because I just don’t think the effort goes into the designs now. I think back to some of our iconic shirts from years ago, such as our 1990 away shirt (the Adidas light blue and white snowflake design) or our early to mid 90’s Umbro shirts (The lace up collar home shirt) and (the 94/95 Old Trafford print home shirt) also the Newton Heath throw back Green and Gold 3rd shirt. Even in the early 00’s we had some cracking shirts, the reversible away shirt which was white on one side and the other side was gold. I always look at our shirts now and feel like most other teams shirts are way better designs. The fact that kits are only out for a season now and not two just shows how the modern fan is getting rinsed for every penny possible.

Arsenal's pink third kit last season was given a big marketing push, loads of people bought it and then it was only worn ONCE by the men's first team, away at Bournemouth. Huge agree that we are releasing far too many kits every season and you can tell the manufacturers don't care anymore, to them it's a low effort money making exercise. The kit quality gets worse and worse every year whilst the prices go up, whilst oftentimes third kits get fewer than 5 run outs by the mens first team. I rarely buy them nowadays, if ever.

The marks on the Spurs home is to do with the sounds of N17. The shirt is similar to the 19-20 home shirt. It's why I usually stick to away and 3rd Spurs shirts as they at least have colour differences. Most designs for the Premier League this season are underwhelming, the Palace pre-match graphic being the only real exception. More impressed this year with Plymouth and Wimbledon kits. about £30+ cheaper than the standard Premier League shirt too.

My biggest issue with the home kits is that they look identical almost every season. Nike is the biggest offender of that, it’s just the same home kit every season. Back in the 00’s/Noughts the kits were really well designed and some became iconic. Adidas, Reebok, Umbro and even Nike were putting out some amazing kits back in the 00’s. I’m a Liverpool fan and my two favourite Liverpool home kits were our Reebok kit from 2004 to 2006, and our Adidas home kit from 2008 to 2010. I’m not a fan of these clubs but by far Chelsea’s best home kit was their Umbro 2005/2006 kit, and by far Arsenal’s best home kit was their 05/06 maroon kit. But in recent years the home kits are the exact same every season with minor changes, and the away kits are far too gimmicky these days.

I get it, I really do, the clubs/brands have to take some responsibility, for the cost of garments and how much they are the same, seasons on season. I can't really blame a family of 4 for thinking twice. the challenge is where these things are coming from and the impact it has on the smaller clubs and brands. I like how NBA teams do jerseys, simple home and away designs that they keep for over a decade and then new 3rd, 4th sometimes even 5th jerseys every season that are more adventurous and can cater to the fan who likes new shirts every season. Simple home and away shirts in recognised club colours would be a bit of a throwback to how 60s and 70s shirts were basically the same every season, but multiple change shirts satisfies the modern fan so something for everyone

I’m biased as a fan, but out of those kits you showed it’s the best one from a design point of view in my opinion. Love the extra deep dive you’ve given for these shirts, which most football shirt influencers don’t offer. I’d love to know your opinion on kits like Venezia and Athens Kallithea, which are very fashion forward. In my experience the Venezia home kit last season was very poor quality with peeling sponsor logo after one wash and the collar not laying flat. Would love to see a deeper dive on this by you guys!

At this point i just feel it's got to the point of being incredibly saturated with way too many football kits releases. Can understand the marketing and money making aspect but think it's a good idea to go back to the older days of using the same home kit for 2 seasons while having an away kit release on that same and the previous season away kit using as a third kit or the previous 3rd kit using as an away kit which Man utd famously done in the 2000s. As someone who has sentimental love for football shirts,i just don't think the kits have too many sentimental values as they used to have because many tends to forget them unless they have something huge. Brands aren't just charging but are coming to the point where it's just saturated due to endless amount of choices worse is the shirts aren't the same. It's something I really do think brands should change at one point. Plus i agree with the whole template thing too..

Don’t think it’s necessarily the designers fault …… after 20 years off changing kits twice as often as they should we would always eventually scrape the barrel … which I feel is where we at …… home kits need to go back to 2 year cycles …… full stop ……if it wasn’t for sponsorship changing so often I would say away and 3rd kits could only change after they have been worn individually x numbers off times by the team … again at least every 2/3 seasons for the average team …… agree mostly as a spurs fan about your comments … last home shirt I bought was the last adidas one from about 20 years ago! Have nice home 15/16? under armour shorts which have nice trim which similar design to 88 ussr and 93 England ones … and Should have bought first Nike one but didn’t get round to it …… all the other home shirts especially after 1st Nike one have been pants …… for context since that last home shirt I’ve bought 5 “change” ( away or 3rd) shirts since then and had I got around to it could have easily bought 10 …… that’s not because I prefer the colours … but because even with a few shocking Kits spurs have still had much better efforts with the other kits then the homes!

Absolutely loved the sincerity and thoroughness of this video! You guys rock. Personally I'm a guy that respects the history of Premier League clubs and don't mind classic looks like Liverpool's or Everton's (apart from that godawful stitch quality). What I feel that it's always off about them all is the lack of agility by the sponsors. No matching colors, backgrounds, fonts... and a rising in sports' betting businesses is worrying. Also, the 2nd and 3rd kits. There is hardly an alternate that doesn't hurt the eyes, it's always bright and complete obnoxious colours, never something simple (That is why I love Man United's white alternate this year, excellent design with a classic touch). I feel like the history of the clubs are constantly overlooked, like that incredible mistake on the Arsenal's kit, and the templates are weak to begin with. Again guys, thank you for your opinion on this, very refreshing to see these reviews so directly in RU-vid!

Hi guys, really rate the video and just want to share my thoughts I agree - it feels like we’re just regurgitating the same designs year in year out. The same material/fabrics are being used while changing very minor details to the look and charging exorbitant prices which is extremely unreasonable for consumers. In Europe a replica jersey is anywhere between €90 - €100 + extra for badges / name & number. How you justify charging upwards of €20 to apply a plastic name and number to a jersey via heat press blows my mind, and don’t get me started on the extra cost of ‘authentic’ match day jerseys. In the case of Nike/Adidas, the brand and club logo are also applied via heat press, and many people have said they just fall off after a few spins in the washing machine, yet you pay a much higher price for it. I feel as though Adidas, Nike, Puma etc., need to be held accountable as the quality of jerseys these days just aren’t the same as what they used to be, yet kits cost so much more these days and only seem to increase. As you mentioned it is no surprise there is such a big market for counterfeit kits. I understand margins need to be made but at what point does enough become enough? I would love to hear your review of AC Milan’s 23/24 Replica vs Authentic Away kit. I recently visited the Milan store to compare the two, and could not comprehend how they justify charging so much for the ‘authentic’ player variant of the jersey. The material literally feels like fish and chip shop paper. Anyway love the channel and Insta, keep it up, cheers

As a football fan that has grew up during the 2 years 1 kit times, I feel like that was a much better way to release kits. If I got a kit and put a player's name on the back, that shirt would represent 2 seasons of him with the shirt as opposed to 1, which already makes the shirt more iconic and significant. Also, a new kit, in the form of an away kit or a home kit, came every other season which was always great to anticipate. Now, it's 3 kits a season which is pretty overwhelming. To add to that, the fact that I had less to buy in terms of kits gave me the incentive to buy other apparel from my club (i.e. training kit, gloves etc). Something that I now barely do because the kits themselves cost me a fortune.

Fully agree with the point abuot the price of the kits and what you actually get in return. As a Liverpool fan, the Nike home shirts have been awful, especially the stadium shirts. I wouldn't pay £10 for that basic piece of polyester let alone £50+. The problem is of course I am in the minority. There are literally thousands of people that will throw money at this rubbish. I only half blame the brands, the buyers themselves have to take responsibility (like most of the commenters here do) and stop feeding the beast. If the prices came down and there was more product innovation then I'd be happy with new shirts every season. Until that happens we'll remain in this downward spiral and the countefeiters will continue to profit.

I'm from Canada. Great video. The quality and design, for my taste, were better in the of the 90's through the end of 2000's. Now, most of them look like an expensive T-shirt.😔 It's not only Premier league shorts but all football shirts. I don't spend my money anymore on an almost same design from 2 to 5 years before and done again and again.
@NathanPearse

Great video guys. I think thee main issue is exactly what you highlighted, too many kits and not enough innovation. It's quantity over quality and it stings consumers the most. More time spent on less shirts would allow for more innovative kits but it seems like these companies solely care about profit.

The point about the prices i fully agree with. For adidas, last year's prices were 90 & 130 USD for replica & authentic. Now it's 100 & 150 USD for repiica & authentic. A replica with a name on the back this year costs almost the same as a blank authentic did last season. It's mental to me. I understand inflation but that's a decent price bump. Especialy for the authentic. It's almost 20% more if u do the math with tax added on it's crazy

my opinions on football kits in general: •nike have been tragic for almost 8 years now using the same template for every team every year (my team citeh suffered from this for long) • puma and adidas have also been boring for ages, adidas SOMETIMES produce bangers such as with arsenal the last couple years (although i think this years is mediocre) • kappa have been doing wonders i have to say, especially with venezia, sadly they dont sponsor anyone in england

Regarding the Adidas and Nike sponsored teams, I'm shocked how bad they are. Same templates, just different colours. No personality. Just looks like they were done in a hurry. "Oh, we have this basic design kinda in your clubs' colour. Let's just get the badge on and go for lunch"..

For me, a chest sponsor makes or breaks a shirt. If the chest sponsor is an obscure company without any "heritage" or is some kind of ethically questionable enterprise (such as payday loans) the whole thing falls flat for me. Even if the shirt is competent in all other areas, the aesthetics and so-called prestige of the chest sponsor is key.

Completely agree on the volume of kits each season. It just seems to be getting out of hand, would much rather it go back to every two years rotation with 1 new one each season. Madrid 3rd kit this year is an example where they have two dark kits and yet surely a 3rd kit is really to offer an alternative colour!

It has always seemed so strange to me that we are told football clubs have such strong identities, while entirely changing how they look on the field every single year. Why can’t ‘the shirt’ just be a t-shirt in the team’s colours and their badge on the chest? Generally there isn’t much to learn from American sports but I would love a NHL-style league-wide deal that uses the same template that each team would add their badge and colours to.

I think that as a fan, you need to embrace wearing ‘retro ‘kits and not feel any pressure to buy a new one each year. I went to a game yesterday wearing a 2018 kit. That’s my newest of the team I support. I might get a new one if a kit comes out that I love but as mine is in good condition I might as well keep wearing it. For the clubs though - look to the NFL. I’m not sure on the rules there but uniforms have some rules for sure. It’s a real event if your team has a new kit. Sure, there is the commercial aspect of it which is why you get 3x kits and a pre match jersey now but it does seem like it’s too much for the manufacturers to keep coming up with decent designs to match the pace and volume.

As a Spurs fan, I love the kit. All I want is for them to not mess with the white kit and that’s exactly what they did. The sleeves having a blue stripe is fine, not ideal but not the worst thing ever. This entire video seems to be a bit harsh on these kits.
