Premier One Electric Fencing - One Year Review // Old vs New Solar Energizers & Gates 

THANKS JOHN! This one was truly for you. I know I left out some things so I will put them in this comment and Pin it. Grounding rods, whether using the one that comes with the energizer or a steel post, need to be "watered in" just like you would water a newly planted seed. And if you go through a stretch of no rain, watered occasionally. If the fence panel ever crosses a dip in the ground and leaves an opening you can use tent stakes to pull the bottom line flush to the ground. I use these stakes: www.walmart.com/ip/10-Nail-Peg/47309862 the nail is very strong and can be driven into the ground. The orange hook on them gives you high visibility to help locate them when your moving the fence and the hook works perfect for pulling that bottom line down. They usually have them in my walmart in a bin in the camping section for cheap. During winter snows you have to go brush the snow off your solar panel. Since they are black they will usually melt off a light snow during the day but heavier snow will cake up on them. I face mine south as best I can year round. Sometimes it can be difficult to get a post to face perfectly south when your driving it but as long as it is close its usually fine. If I think of anything else I left out I will come post it here.

Thanks for the great compliment! No, the energizer is designed to pulse. It only emits power every other second or so. Not to mention that it is inverted to push 8,000 volts but very low amps. You would need to bypass the energizer and hook straight to the battery while still keeping the battery hooked up to the solar panel. In which case you could have a little 12 volt 12 amp hour back up. You could probably charge a few small things but that's about it. The solar panel is 10 watts so you can keep the battery at a descent charge as long as you didn't drain it dead. I think there are better ways to get solar charging or power while camping but for an emergency scenario it could be something. :)

Stevens Family Farms I would love a review on the sheep fence. We're looking into sheep as well. We want to be on the property a little while before adding new animals though. For now our chickens and rabbits will move with us and that's enough to deal with not knowing the land well. I still have not made up my mind whether we will go electric or stay with our dog kennel fence we have now. The kennel fence may be easier to move and deal with. We'll figure it out eventually.

The chicken wire works good so far and I think its because we have dogs near by. :)

All of my fencing is 100' sections and always 2 paired together with one energizer. Even for the garden. :) Those 2 are very comparable on specs, the main difference is the premier PRS 100 is in a metal case that is meant to be set on the ground. The Intellishock 120 is in a plastic case and in my opnion are better because of the ability to mount them on a t-post off the ground. Best of luck. I still love my fencing 2 years later!

Katrina, jumping in here because I use Premier1 nets for both sheep and goats for the purpose of rotational grazing. I've been using it for almost a year now, and depending on the time of year and the specific area of my farm I'm grazing them on, I move paddocks at least weekly, sometimes twice a week, and in times when I'm strictly rationing grazing (such as this winter when forage was extremely limited) I've even moved some fencing daily (to make sure they got something fresh every day). It has worked perfectly for me and is by far the best way to rotationally graze. I take down, move and set up completely by myself, it's pretty easy once I got the hang of it. Although I should mention that the double spike step-in posts work fine in my soil, I don't have the same issue with having to hammer in dry hard soil like he experienced in his area. I use the system in 3 to 4 different areas on my farm at any given time; for each area I use a 4 joule energizer (which requires 12' of ground rods in the ground) and a deep cycle marine battery to power it (I rotate the batteries and use a trickle charger in my house to recharge them). For my sheep and does I use the ElectroStop nets, for my bucks I use the Poultry Net. Each strand shows 8-12K volts even at the far end of the fence. I have used up to 10 nets together so far, but I'm about to go out farther to the back of my property and I will be using 21 ElectroStop nets to get them out there; for that I will be using an 8 joule energizer to make sure there's plenty of punch. I should also mention that, while moving the nets in pastures is pretty easy, I also use nets through woods for my bucks and that is more difficult to do by myself because I use the taller PoultryNet for them, which is heavier, and the nets catch on all the trees, limbs, vines, etc. So that wasn't fun last year but I managed (they're on pasture land right now, but before I rotate them back into the woods this summer I will be making much wider paths with my weed wacker (brush blade) to make my life easier). You are absolutely correct that goats are the real test, my sheep don't test the fence, but the goats absolutely know if the power is off so it's very important that it is always always hot and that I always have a charged battery ready and waiting. Anyway, hope you don't mind me jumping in here but I thought I'd share my experience since we have the same concerns (rotational grazing is my number one priority this year for a number of reasons, not the least of which is fighting the barber pole worm).

I wish I had seen this before buying. The 164’ is very heavy for me. I got my friend to help me put it up, but I really should have gotten a lighter one. I called Premier1 for help picking a fence before ordering, but he didn’t mention anything about the weight... 😩

Pretty much. We will see how it holds up after a year. I don't think its a deal breaker but something to consider depending how much abuse it may take and how someone would prefer to set it up.

My uncle is the only man I have ever seen cross electrified wire by pushing it down and stepping over without flinching. It took me two separate times in following him crossing wire to stop and ask if the wire was hot before I put my hand on it. I recall him smiling and saying no. Believe you me I was a little gun shy by then! lol

I will say this, and it may apply to your uncle. My son and I have noticed a great deal in difference on how bad of a shock you get based on what kind of shoes your wearing. Cant figure out a pattern yet but... good things our critters don't wear shoes:)

next time I see him I am going to ask him if that was his secret. though everyone later told me he never had a problem even when he was young. though you may have revealed his secret.

It is still working well but I don't like it. I do not like the new separate design. I don't like how flimsy the solar panel feels attached to the box. I don't like having to adjust it for the angle of the sun, which you don't actually have to, but since it is adjustable you feel like you should. I don't like how big it is and how unstable it feels on top of a t-post, which I prefer to keep my energizers off the ground. I hate to say this but if I ever get another energizer I may look at another brand all in one unit like Patriot or Zareba or another brand because I just like the one piece design better. In my experience they are easier to transport and seem more durable.

Stevens Family Farms I do like that the ground stakes are built in. Of course, you don’t get that feature when using the T posts.

I would do the poultry netting. If you do a good job of training them to the electric fence making sure it is shocking very good and has high voltage all the time than you shouldn’t have problems with the goats or dogs "destroying" the fence. The only time that would happen is if the fence is not energized, they happen to touch it, for whatever reason, and they unlearn to stay away from it because they no longer see it as a danger but as an obstacle that can be negotiated. With these netting types of electric fence smaller is usually better, especially if there is a chance you will need them to be versatile in the future, like (changing from smaller to larger animals inside the fencing and vice versa). If you knew for 100% that you would only ever put goats or sheep in it and nothing else then you could go for the larger netting. We have all poultry netting, 6 pieces over 600 feet total with 3 energizers, and have used it on many species. Pigs, Dogs, Chickens, Ducks, Turkeys, Goats and Sheep. As long as they are properly energized, they work well on all. Hope my answer helps you! 😊

I'd like to but I don't want to risk one of them getting hurt or killed since we breed them. Our area has a lot of ridges and cliffs and I've heard stories of beagles running right of the edge, falling to their death, while they were chasing something.

I'd say proof is a high expectation. They are water resistant and mine have been outside for almost 2 years in hundreds of rain storms and have never had a problem.

And…the plug in transformer is not weatherproof/resistant so you need to bring the unit indoors to recharge. The on/off button gets wet and in cold weather freezes so it can’t be turned on/off
