This video demonstrates how to prepare the daily fruit feed for two macaws (half the portions if feeding one macaw).
The main points to take from the video are:
1. Variety is the most important aspect of a macaws diet.
2. Fresh fruit at least 3-4 times a week is a must for a complete and balanced diet.
3. Providing fruit need not be expensive, as long as you prepare the food in a way to help the macaw minimise wastage.
We give fresh fruits and nuts on alternate days. For nuts, the quantities we give are: 1 full cup of roasted unsalted peanuts, 1 half cup of chopped almonds and 1 half cup of broken cashew nuts. Once a week each macaw is given a walnut-in-shell as a treat.

Hi Josh, thanks for your comment. We do recommend pellets in particular situations: a) if a bird is feeling under the weather, b) to promote breeding and c) for new birds making their transition into a new home, for example. However, we do not feed pellets as part of their normal diet as we feel the fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, egg food and cheese given to our birds provides all the nutrients required. All the best!

There's this great channel called BirdTricks that shows you how to flight train, train, body language, how to stop a bird from biting and shoulder rushing, how to train a bird to play with birds, the right cage for budgies, how to interact with a bird on it's first day, the amount of food to give to a bird, forgaging tips, how to keep a bird cageless, and more. They have a website that sells birdie bread mixes, pellets, a one on one consultation with them, cookbooks for seasonal feeding that mimics what they eat in the wild and changes with the four seasons, and a cookbook for foods you can share with your bird, like muffins and spaghetti.

Hi Cody, on the contrary Kiwi fruits are great for Macaws. I haven't heard anyone report problems personally, and our Macaws love them! Here are a few reasons why they are so great: High fibre = aids bowel movements, Proteinases = helps the digestion of protein-rich foods (e.g. nuts), Antioxidants = high Vitamin C and E levels boost their immune system. Some may say Kiwis are the 'perfect' fruit!

Hi Inayah! That is a very good question and prompts me to produce a follow-up video about our nuts, cheese and eggfood portions. To answer your question, we give the following: a) 1 whole cup of roasted unsalted peanuts or 1/2 cup peanuts and 1/2 cup soaked + sprouted sunflower seeds b) 1/2 cup of broken/split cashew nuts c) 1/2 cup of almonds cut in half (or smaller for smaller Macaws) The above is one whole days worth of nuts for two Macaws (so half of this for a single Macaw).

Hi Pedro, apologies for the delay! Your B&G was 16 weeks at the time of your comment, at this age most babies cannot/will not eat by themselves. Weaning at the babies pace can take around 24 weeks, so you are doing the right thing by handfeeding 2x daily and offering lots of food. Keep going! If it passes 24 weeks and the baby will still not eat then you must rule out infection as a cause. At that point talk to an Avian Veterinarian for advice about appropriate antibiotics. Boo likes all of those but banana. I have no idea why but he detests them. I have sat and eaten them in front of him repeatedly. I have tried dried, mashed, plain raw, sliced and nope.

I have to try this! Hm, i have yet to find a good recipe for Macaw veggie/fruit chop, and i'm not sure whether to recipes i find all over the net for Greys can be of any benefit to my Macaw. Is there something you could recommend that i could make a bunch of in advance and freeze, he already gets a variety of nuts often. I own 1 Green Winged Macaw. Thanks in advance!

Hi, thanks for your comment! In terms of their diet, the main difference between Macaws and African Greys is that Macaws need a much higher fat content overall, usually provided by giving extra nuts/seeds. With regards to fresh fruit and vegetables, the do's and don't's for most birds are the same (e.g. avoid Apple seeds, avoid Avocado, cook Lentils before serving etc). In essence, most recipes for African Greys should be safe to give to your Greenwinged Macaw (as part of a balanced diet). All the best!

Hi Christian, Macaws really do need this much fruit! And even with this our Macaws wipe the bowls clean! Remember that this video is only for the larger species of Macaws that we breed, and the amount shown is for two Macaws eating from one bowl (so half the amount for just one Macaw).

I have a Conure & Indian Ringneck. I didnt know they can have skin. I always take the skin off. This sure makes it easier! Not taking the skin off everything. Can they have oranges?

Great video - thank you. Do you cut up the food and then give them some of the food at different times of the day or just all at once? What else do you recommend feeding macaws? I just brought my baby green wing home and he is not eating solid foods. I am doing what the breeder had been doing, soaking zupreme bird food in water then draining the water off and then he eats it up. I have also been mixing the food with one scrambled egg. What are your thoughts? Thanks again!

I have a 4 month old blue and gold macaw , until this moment he still can not eat by himself. I give him benana, pineapple, corn, sun flowwer seed and none of them he eat it. How can i teach him to eat ? right now i handfeed 2x daily with Kytee . Thanks.

Some bird owners dont give their birds fruit only veggies. They say fruit has to much sugar & isnt good for them.

TuTu Fox 90 percent veg and then pellets and fruit to be given 2-3 times per week max is the advice I follow by a channel on RU-vid called bird tricks. I’m not seen this channel is wrong though I suppose you do what works best for you and your birds !!

Amelia as far as I’m aware macaws do not need high fat diet. Especially macaws who aren’t getting the exercise needed to burn off high fat foods. They can get health complications easily if eating high fat foods, things like nuts and seeds should be given as treats in training and not as part of every day diet. Mainly a good pellet and vegetables is what I’ve always been advised by my avian vet to give my CAG and blue and gold macaw.😊

Great Video! But wondering about veggies?If so, when and how much Veggies per day? Or do you do fruit one day and veggies the next I'm a new Mum to a female 14 yr old green wing Macaw. I am not happy with her diet as of yet. Everyone tells me something different...like avoid bananas, veggie chops and pellets etc. Quite frankly, I am very confused! Seems like so much food per day to have pellets veggies and fruit. My Macaw doesn't like most veggies, some fruits...sorry, could go on n' on! Can you help clear some of this up???? Thank You so much 🐦🐦

I feed chop. A mixture of quinoa, 3/4veggies, and one fruit. You wanna use 2 fruits since you have a macaw. I also feed sprouted seeds as they have more nutrients than dry seeds. A variety of nuts(except peanuts) and pellets. I feed Harrison's pellets as they're the best dry pellet. I also feed TOP pellets, they're cold pressed therefore they contain more nutrients than hot pressed/dry pellets.

So they're not aware of what's bad for them? I'm asking cus you're removing all the seeds and I'm thinking their physiology might make them 'not like" whats naturally bad for them.
