What beautiful colors! With the first one, the color is so even, with such a crisp pattern inside. Three, four and five had beautiful windows (?), and the bands in five have those deep bands I like so much. Is there a way of minimally polishing the outside windows without losing the texture? They might make beautiful stand up specimens, with one side polished smooth, and the other polished enough to see how what is outside carries in, but still have the original rough texture.

I love the agates from Mexico, Agates from Africa can be spectacular as well. I think a lot of the fracturing happens during the extraction process, and the shipping. Great Agates either way.
@Thrandogar
@Thrandogar Месяц назад
Depends on the type of fractures. Most are natural or based on mining. "Human" fractures have often shattercones, sharp edges and you see free, white fissures. Natural is more smooth, colorshift by bleaching etc. dirty fractures. Transport can damage, but think about, it's a rock, so won't damage each other so easy. Mozambique tends to be brittle. They don't like much pressure or jumping while cutting or any stress and heating. This causes hairline fissures in seconds at this location. There ist lots of internal tension.

I 'saw' a small boat with a sail raised up in the pattern of the 1st cut agate. @4:55, that split was so strange, as if looking a the rear side of two different women both wearing a red dress but one's was a brunette and the other a redhead. Maybe it was the lighting and the 'head colors' were actually the same . Hmmmm......

Unrelated question! At 5 below there are some "Agate" incense holders. I bought one and slabbed it out on my tile saw, cabbed one out to see how it shapes and polished. I know it isn't real agate but this stuff is hard, and polished really well. I would love to see what you make of them! And any ideas as to what they actually are .. lol

@Thrandogar Месяц назад
Do you really think there is someone sitting around cracking/cutting agates and put them back together for selection in low, premium grade and leave bads one for profit inside? You have a stone which filled a cavity millions of years ago. The host rock will suffer weathering, crumble away or resist till today. The agates may stay fixed in a stone wall, lay in crumbled stone/dirt or beeing transported by rivers etc. You have tectonic activities which put pressure on the stone, change in temperature, maybe ice etc. and when mining hit them with a shovel, excavator etc. Some stones break during mining actions, other did this millions of years ago. It is extrem rare to find both parts of an old broken nodule. This is an absolute natural process. Noone peaks inside; usually. In Morocco is is commen that they hit the agates with a hammer in order to seed what to exspect in order to increase the money they can claim. But this is caused by greed and a massiv nuisance. The stones suffer on this stupid behaviour. They get shattercones and cracks down to their core depening on skill and luck. This limits the options for cutting and block often the best way of cutting. You have to hope these cracks won't reach as deep as you tend/can to cut your stone. You may think you have a valueable stone by banding, color... but thacks to this behaviour the cracks reduce the value to 30% or lower and the stone may brak and damage you sawblade etc. Premium quality means colorful, fine banded, parallax, rare structures, maybe pseudomorphs or rare structures, full face/banding (not cutting in windows or something like this), no cracks and fissures and at last good finish.
