About this time last year I took a Lancier Legacy (GA plane) in X-Plane on a 6 hour flight from 6B6 (the field I take flight lessons out of near BOS) To Oshkosh

You’ll love TrackIR when you get it. If you get the opportunity though, check out flying under a VR headset. It is a game changer.

Paul Phibbs I have the Oculus Rift. But for recording videos the presentation doesn’t look as nice as nice. On Aerofly it’s pretty good though. Next video I’m checking out their new helicopter in VR.

Really nice video! A question: How do you control the camera view? Using Track IR?

I just added REX and Active Sky. With these two combined I am seeing that awesome wisp of clouds around the windscreen. Don't know which program adds this effect.

Schteve Ven it’s one or the other. I have both installed but maybe I have something turned off. It’s most likely ActIve Sky.

Nice video and nice flight. As for the landing, there were a number of reasons why the landing was hard. First, you were too high on the approach almost the entire way down. You did not trust the PAPI light indications and felt that If you flew any lower you would be uncomfortably low. That is wrong and in some circumstances trusting your senses over calibrated instruments can be catastrophically dangerous . When learning how to fly IFR, more than half the time is spent being taught to disregard your body's kinesthetic sensations of what the airplane is doing and to TRUST THE INSTRUMENTS. Many pilots have died disregarding the instruments and relying on their "senses." PAPI lights are designed to show two red and two white when you are on the correct glide path (usually 3°). If the PAPI lights show all white as they did in your video almost all the way down, you are too high. It is not a question of belief or feel, it is simply physics. You finally did get on the glide path just as you crossed the threshold. Second, although I heard the flaps activated, I could not tell from the video how many degrees of flaps you had in. The Cessna 172 POH Section 4, Page 5 (May 30, 2000) states: "Landing Approach: Normal Approach Flaps Up 65-75 KIAS Normal Approach Flaps 30°. 60-70 KIAS" As you crossed the threshold, you were holding 60 knots. If you had 30° of flaps in, that would be at the bottom end of the correct airspeed range. If you had less flaps in, that would have been too slow. But then, after finally getting to the proper glide path, you flared too high and continued to pull the nose up. That caused the airplane to climb (the PAPI's went from two red and two white to all white again) and the airspeed to bleed off in the climb. The airplane began to stall when it had climbed back up to about 8-10 feet above the ground. The airplane did stall when you were about 5-6 feet off the ground. That caused the higher than normal sink rate and that is what led to the harder than usual landing. One trick that might help is to scrupulously hold the proper airspeed (with pitch) and glide path (with power) and wait to flare until you are close enough to the runway that the sides of the runway no longer appear in front of you but suddenly appear to widen out to either side of you. When that visual cue happens, that's the time to flare and then gently hold the nose off so that the airspeed bleeds off slowly and the airplane settles itself onto the runway. You may use up a bit more runway that way but eventually the airplane will bleed off the energy needed to generate lift and when you finally touch down, the airplane will not have enough energy or lift to bounce. The stall should be mere inches above the runway and touchdown almost simultaneous with it.

Thank you. I will say though in flight sim the papis aren’t as calibrated as they are in real life. Just changing your camera height with chaseplane can greatly effect the papi lights. But yeah I’ve understood what they mean for a very long time. This was just a bad example to be judged on as I’ve had much better landings before. Im getting a new yoke soon so that will also help. I’ve never liked the dead zone of the Saitek yokes.

are the buildings and lights part of the game or an add-on? tks

Rene Zammit in this video these are add-ons. But the buildings do come with the base sim. They just won’t look as nice.

I agree, hadn't flown it in months. Had some nice ones doing pattern work the day before, but unfortunately got a bad one on film the next day when I did this flight.
