ABOUT THIS VIDEO
There are times when it makes sense to rig the tail of the rope to the anchor and toss or take the bulk of the rope to the bottom. Is it still possible to rig for contingencies?

I really love this video, and I've spent several days off and on trying to find it again. So much good information here, and such a compact form factor. I'm going to try to practice some of these techniques in the near future. If you are still making videos like this, I would love to see some of these hauling systems with variations in gear. Specifically, I'm thinking of using a prusik for progress capture, rather than a Petzl Micro Traction, mainly because I don't have one on hand, and I have plenty of accessory cord available, and it's more likely to have in a pinch. But I love this whole concept, and I wish I had learned it earlier and been practicing it.

Glad you enjoy the video. I have not made any videos in awhile, but I am back at it. I will add your request to my list.

During a practice session I tried the Spanish Balancier with an Edelrid Spoc and I couldn't get it to work. This was in part because the cam in the Spoc is exposed and the carabiner that's used to create the Spanish Balancier pushes on the exposed cam. (With the Petzl Micro Traxion the cam is covered.) The other issue was the person I was attempting to raise was quite heavy and there was a lot of friction. I was able to solve this by attaching my Spoc to the rope using a single sling (about 4x longer than a quick draw) and then attaching a rope grab below the Spoc and setting up a 2:1 pulley with a rescue cord. (A long sling could work too.) After pulling up a couple of inches, I manually set the Spoc which allowed me to unclip the rope and set up a 3:1. A few more steps than the Spanish Balancier, but not too difficult.

Great point on rigging releasable even for tails up. Super easy to release and transfer the load to the PCD.

Would a petzel tibloc work instead of the progress capture device ? Or is it reccomended to only use a pcd?

Lucas, you might not be clear on the definition of PCD. It is a function, not a specific piece of gear. You can use a Micro Traxion to create a PCD. You can also use a Tibloc to create a PCD. You can use a prusik and a pulley, a prusik and a carabiner ... Virtually anything that will grab the rope and hold it securely can be used to create a PCD.

@@ACAcanyoneering Wow. I just did some canyons in Zion and I don't think anyone in our group had anything that could have been used as a PCD in a recovery. We didn't know what we didn't know. This comment and video taught me so much. I now know how to plan ahead for a recovery and will definitely be bringing a Micro Traxion/Prusik/Pully on all future canyons. Thank you for this information.
