I bought a complete new bed for my '68 C10. The panels are EDP coated. Should I even bother to use an epoxy primer in this case? I'm thinking urethane 2k, block sand and lay down my single stage paint.
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody Год назад
I would do just like you said - scuff the panel first. Remember, epoxy primer is relatively new to auto body. In the 80's? you'd scuff these panels and paint (inside or outside) if there were no dents from shipping :)

I've been looking for Wax & Grease remover but there's a ton to choose from. So I go to your channel and there you are LOL But, what type of Wax & Grease remover do you suggest? Currently, I've been using Windex or Acetone just to clean the area but I'm getting close to putting filler and apoxy primer on an don't want to use the wrong stuff..
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody Год назад
All automotive wax and grease remover is pretty similar so just find one local or readily available for a reasonable price. I use Autobody Master autobodymaster.com/product_list.jsp?PHPRJ_GROUP_ID=2032 because I can get it right in town. When I was growing up working w/ my dad we used reducer or even lacquer thinner - careful w/ thinner as it can melt stuff. Folks use rubbing alcohol too in a pinch :)

Hi Jerry, great video. For that particular paint, is it a enamel reducer or a urethane one?? Oh, who does your intros for you?? Sounds great 👍
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody Год назад
Both the Ful-Cry and Ful-Thane use urethane reducer. Matter of fact, all Nason paints and clears use urethane reducer. I do the intros but have to work on matching the volume a bit. They might be a little loud. I just can't kick the "Metal" habit - thought I'd grow out of it one day but - nope 😄

I am spraying the insides of my two replacement fenders with a coat or two of epoxy primer. Should I also spray epoxy on the outer visible surfaces as a base coat prior to top coat black?
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody Год назад
You can if you want - it can't hurt but remember...epoxy primer doesn't sand well as it gums up the paper. You might want to primer the outside with a DTM direct to metal urethane primer or a lacquer primer. You could also just scuff and paint or like you said hit it with the epoxy and maybe lightly wet sand before paint to remove dust specks. Wet sanding works better when paper gums up :)
@andrewbrown1463
@andrewbrown1463 Год назад
Awesome thanks. I’ve decided to go with a few coats of grey filler primer over top of the scuffed black primer the panel already has on it. Then top coat and clear over that. Does that make sense? Your videos have been an amazing resource. Thanks for all of your advice and information sir!

It sounds like you have your air compressor inside the garage. What do you do to keep it from stirring up dust when it kicks on? I’m having trouble with this.
@LakesideAutobody
@LakesideAutobody Год назад
It's a smaller compressor - here's a vid on it - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-53miAObOdVY.html When it comes to dust in a paint job, it has nothing to do with what's in the shop, compressor, etc. Only what's already on the surface of what you are painting before the first coat. IOW - all the dust in your paint job comes from what already on the panel before the first coat. See this video for more on that - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VNrIwVMxjI0.html the part where we focus on making sure the surface is dust free :)

You'll be fine waiting 10-15 minutes between coats - even less sometimes if its really warm out. I usually keep it around 65 in the shop but you can paint at a lot of different temps - probably anywhere from 55-100 degrees using different temp reducers - they make slow for hot temps on up to fast for low temps - I use medium all the time :)

It's probably middle of the road when it comes to price. The price depends on color so... I can't give you an exact price for a quart or gallon. As for quality - I promise you'll like this paint - Ful-Cryl (acrylic enamel) or Ful-Thane (urethane) - both are excellent for anything automotive. @LakesideAutobody

@@designsinorbit If your body work really needs help, the highest building primer is feather fill by evercoat. Otherwise they all build thickness about the same. I use lacquer primer surfacer mostly but not opposed to urethane - lacquer is just easier to use - no mixing or pot life. Any brand will work fine for you - what ever is the most cost friendly - I use Autobody Master. Here's a primer vid that may help - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-I5RaAgbNOe0.html

I just read on paintforcars that the urethane reducer's shelf life after opening is 7 days. They weren't clear as to whether that's after mixing or just in general. If in general, that would make practicing on small parts expensive! And buying a gallon to save money would be out of the question. Should I stop bugging you with questions and ask the manufacturer? Or does this help your channel? :)
