Bolts or glue.
@knowledgeisgood9645
@knowledgeisgood9645 Месяц назад
Two ways. The large part are attached to welded studs (fork-like pins with barbs). 3 studs to each tile (the tiles have imbedded steel strips the studs hook on to). They also add a thermal blanket between the steel and the tiles to reduce vibrations and as extra insulation. The tiles needed on difficult areas like the nose cone are thicker and are glued. No thermal blankets are used blow those, but I think they could have material between the tiles to fill the gaps (not sure about that last bit).

There has to be a better way to fitting heat-shield tiles on a nose-cone than being precariously perched on a bouncing man-lift. Tiles could potentially be dropped or maybe not attached with complete precision. I'm assuming the worker is tethered at least. Given the importance to saving the vehicle during re-entry, I am surprised at this clip. I hope this will be resolved once the star-factory is fully operational.

Why nobody builds launch sites in mountains, like Everest? It would save 30-40% of propellant. Or they could build a structure like 10 km tall with the launch site(s) and then no flame diverters would be needed as well. Also the air temperature at the altitude of 10 km is -50 oC, so less energy needed for cooling propellant.

Is the lack of innovation on the heat tiles something that is addressed later do you think?
@knowledgeisgood9645
@knowledgeisgood9645 Месяц назад
If you have a better innovation I am sure SpaceX is happy to listen. The heat shield has to fill many requirements: 1. Manage the heat of reentry at high speeds. 2. Not expand or contract too much (causing cracks). 3. Be very light weight. 4. Be cheap to produce. 5. Be simple to install. 6. Be possible to replace when needed. There are innovations regarding the materials used in the tiles, the way they are made and much more. The process of R&D has not stopped.
