Carrie and Alex, 30 years ago I lived in this home. My first baby took her first steps in that hallway coming into the lounge on her first birthday. From the very first video it seemed so familiar to me. I love that I am getting to see it in a new light. 😊 I will try find some photos of what she (the house) looked like and send them to you. I also raised a baby lamb there. 😊🐑 Oh and btw I just watched the laundry video and the whole time I was saying use the taps and it also hasn't changed or been upgraded in that 30 years haha

I wasn't sure if I should say something because I don't want you to feel freaked out or like you have been stalked lol. Roughly a year and a half before we brought our first home not far from there. My parents owned a home at the end of this road and my in laws were at the other end. The stories I could tell you. Anyway I just thought it might be fun for you to see some old pictures when I find them 😁

I hope you don’t plan on using those garden beds for a few months! That manure doesn’t look composted and is too “hot” for plants to grow + may contain parasites if not properly composted

Hope I'm not the only guy who enjoys your channel Carrie. I follow Alex too so I'm not weird or anything. Loved your facial expressions when Alex joined you in the mudroom. I know exactly what you were thinking.😆 As for the cage out in the shed, that's normal if you have the space and it's called "the dog box." Not for dogs though, but for errant husband's when they are banned from the bedroom! Love your work!💕👍🏻🇳🇿

Fellow homesteader here 👋🏼 a kiwi living in south Australia. I just wanted to give you a heads up regarding using manure in the garden... if the farmer who owns the stock doesn’t use organic farming practices, it’s highly likely that they will drench their stock for parasite control. You might want to find that out before using it to grow your food. We also use manure from our sheep and horses (and soon chickens) but we use organic farming practices. It’s also something to be mindful of when buying horse manure from the side of the road or racing yards. Hope that’s helpful! Loving the new adventure 😊

If your going to lay tiles on top of an old wood floor, double check that the foundations are rock solid to avoid cracking at a later date..... Check with the tile people, they will be happy to advise. 😀👍

I noticed in the US when I lived there, that using dryers were the norm, which I found odd. Air drying clothes I think is more common here in NZ. We have one but we only use it for sheets/towels 👍🏽

I look forward so much to these installments. I love the renovation! Dying laughing with the washer dryer. It's so common in apartments in Ireland to have a washer/dryer, and I hate it 😂, but we mostly air dry. Nothing like bed sheets dried on the clothes line. I feel like the sunshine has been infused into my sheets.

Ps that ladybug was unfortunately a foreign one, not native, and is considered an invasive species. I’ve loved learning how to tell our native fauna from introduced - even down to things like the kiwi praying mantis vs the invasive South African one! So cool 🙌

If you're getting a new toilet make sure you get back-to-the-wall!!!!!! Cleaning behind the toilet is the most gross job in the house and a back-to-the-wall eliminates that. I'm glad to have the chance to see you using the Fisher and Paykel Washer/Dryer because I'm considering getting one. I thought they were really expensive and I'd never be able to get one but I was in Farmers the other day and saw they were actually quite reasonable so I seriously thinking about it (my current upright washer is very large and I am very short, not a good combo). You might be able to replace a roof panel or 2 in your garden workshop with clear polycarbonate so your seedlings get good light. I'd recommend you keep some kind of clothesline in there even when you've got it fixed up as a nice workshop. Living in the Wellington region it's a huge bonus if you have some sort of covered outdoor space to dry washing so you're not running the dryer all the time and wasting power but also not trying to get washing dry outside between showers.

Love watching how this is coming together for you. Agree - the folks at Zip are great. We redid our bath and kitchen since we bought our old place 3 years ago and they happily accommodated all of my weird 'American style' wants for both rooms (including the massive single bowl kitchen sink). Love the tiles you picked out too, it's going to look great. On the garden side of things - DM me if you'd like some wild organic strawberries. We were given some from one of my husband's coworkers last year and they have literally 'gone wild' so I need to divide/thin them this week. Happy to give you some of them (also not trying to be weird or stalky, just neighborly) - if you get them in the ground now, they'll be happily fruiting for Christmas. They take zero effort, just pop them into dirt and that's it.

Carrie, my partner and I are exactly in the same moment of our house reno journey as you are, not far from where you guys live. I swear we go to the same shops and right now are redoing the bathroom and choosing tiles hahah. Loving all your adventures Carrie! Thank you for sharing your "pinch-me" moments. Lots more to come, I'm sure! We have a lot of weeds here, and like the course you took, we use cardboard over top of weeds and then put a mulch of leaves and twigs to hold it down around our landscaping. Works like a charm! You'll love it. Will save you hours of time weeding. Good on ya for scooping the poop and using it! When you get chickens - their fertilizer is really good too. Happy homesteading!

I thought that too. My son left his dishwasher on when he went to bed and there was an electric problem that nearly burnt the kitchen down! Now he puts the dishwasher on right after dinner in the evening.

I recalled a firefighter mentioned that a lot of dryer fires stem from people not using the lint filter nor clean it. Also to clear lint collected around the drum etc. He also mentioned to do the same for heat pumps.

A lot easier, and makes for a tidier looking finish, if you remove all window stays and catches before painting the frames. More a job suited for Summer, but if you're careful with the painting it should still look okay. Scrape off any over painting with a razor blade.

Hanging up clothes to dry outside will save you tons of money on electricity. You're so lucky that you are able to do that!

If you do tile the laundry/bathroom floor try and put a floor drain in! The one thing kiwi homes are missing and it drives me crazy 😂 great for flooding or possibly future kids getting water everywhere!

Your bathroom is going to look great! If you can do it, try to put down a heated floor under your tile. You won’t regret it in winter.

I would go with the pic on the lower right in terms of tiles for the bath-herringbone and subway are all ready out of style with hexigon soon to follow. A more organic look is better and less likely to go out of style. And the moroccan look will be beautiful! how fun!!

You can also use the sheep poo to make manure tea in a bucket. A good liquid fertiliser!

This process is called "nest building"! Taking on an orphaned lamb is part of being "clucky" so we we see what happens as the nest gets closer to completion ps you should remove all the window hardware before painting

I think when you grow food to eat my understanding is that you only use poop from herbivores not any animal that will eat flesh.

Yeah that's what we were taught too. Being a nurse we learnt all about the nitrogen cycle and It really stuck with me and let me understand the science behind it all and why we need to do certain things for successfull food production. So at least I finally found out the reasons behind it, as growing up I always wanted to understand why we do certain things certain ways. Wow what a resource the internet is for youth today. I had to try and find all my answers in books. Being ADHD I think actually helped me have a thirst for knowledge and a life long love of learning.

One of those weeds looks like purple dead nettle that we have on Vancouver Island. It’s a superfood. Double check but if it is, it’s delicious.

You need a pitch fork to loosen the soil and the weeds will then be easier to get out

Which model of washer/dryer did you get? Our daughter has one in her flat in Wellington and it is really bad. The dryer does not dry the clothes fully no matter how long it runs. We heard that the combo w/d are just "like that" so we were reluctant to replace it. But if yours is running so well as you described, perhaps replacing hers with a new model is the answer. Thanks! (also, I love the look of that mop! I might need to pop into Mitre10 myself.)
